  • Thanks so much guys. I'm now looking for another 5k to sign up for.

I was going to take a few days off from running after the 5k, but this morning (after a weekend of bad eating) I was up 4 pounds. I decided I should get my biscuit out on the pavement.

I did the week 4 workout and tried it with a heart rate monitor. It made a HUGE difference. I barely broke a sweat and felt like I could have kept going. Since I've had problems with pacing myself I'm going to continue running with the heart rate monitor in the future.

Same thing happened me on Saturday so i am hoping that i will be back, also due TOM so its all up up up , hopefully ill be on track for tomorrow if not on Thurs,

Did week5 day1 and did 3miles today after work.. feel tired this evening but it is a proper tired, if ya get me, not a lazy over ate tired..

looking forward to my sleep tonight zzz
Going to go for day2 tomorrow..
  • Since we both got right back on track it's all good. The setback amounts to losing a week, which is not that significant. Today I am only up 2.3 pounds from last week, so the bloat is going down. Also, I know what you mean about that nasty "food coma" tired feeling. I was SO READY to get back on the wagon Monday morning. I did W5D1 today too and finished it with energy to spare in nasty humid weather. I'm going to do W5D2 for the next 3 days, then maybe work up the courage to try the 20 min run.

I've also decided on my upcoming race schedule.

8/07 - 5K - I hope to have "graduated" from C25K by then, be able to run the whole thing and have a 30 min-ish time

    9/24
    - 5 mile race - I hope to be able to run the whole thing. I'll have 1.5 months to add >2 miles of distance

10/30 - 10K - It's a Halloween race near where my Bro is going to a large state university. The date is ~ 1 week after his 21st birthday. I'll spend the weekend at his place, complete the race and get to go to fun college Halloween parties. I can't wait!!
  • Wow, a 10k! I'm sure you can do it Scarlett! How is the HRM working for your runs? Does it tell you how many calories you burn too? I'd be interested to know, as I doubt the widget on my phone is really any good!

So unfortunately, I did something to my hip (doctor says it's an 'inflamed nerve', whatever that means - I didn't know nerves could get inflamed but obviously I'm no doctor!) the other day and am not even walking properly, let alone running. She said no running until at least Monday, has me on a bunch of painkillers, and as little moving around this weekend as possible. THAT SUCKS! I count on weekends to go for good strong runs as my runs during the week tend to be not quite as good and focused. But if I take the time to heal up now, I should be okay (fingers crossed) for next Sunday's 5k. If it's not better on Monday, I have to go back to their specific sports injury doctor/physio guy

    How is everyone else doing?
  • oh no freedomreins thats aweful. At least it looks like the injury is minor. Hopefully a few days of rest will do the trick. Don't try to push yourself to get back too soon.

I have a very basic Polar heart rate monitor. I bought it 3+ years ago when I was going to a gym. At the gym the machines could detect HRMs and show what fitness zone you were in on the screen. I'm just happy it still works. I wear it running and gauged by my comfort level that I should be running at 160-180 BPM. At 180+ I really start feeling winded. I check it every few min while running and if it's creeping up near 175-180 I try to slow up and focus on my breathing in order to bring it down. I've really struggled with going out too fast and pacing myself. I just can't do it very well on my own. The HRM has really helped, especially on these longer intervals.

For right now going outside with an ipod, HRM and a timer has been working fine. In a few months (once I have some money) I'd like to hunt around for some sort of more sophisticated running gadget that can do a little more.

oh no i hope you recover quickly, If you have a swimming pool near you i always find the water great but then again thats normally if my limbs are sore .. sending you get well vibes

haha i think that we had identical weeks both with the splurge/the guilt/and the getting back on track trying to undo it haha

also apologies for my brilliant English in the previous post..hadn't spotted it..

    ,, lol shocking..

anyway have a stiff hip area , hope its not like your problem freedom, so a good bath is in order and a days rest i think after 3 days literally on the trot..

wk 6 today and failed badly.. well hmmm there was a serious wind against me for most of the track so it fairly took it out of me, but i kept pushing on and managed 4 1/2 miles total of 1 hr..
  • WOO!!!! Just finished W5D2 Today for the first time

I was spent after the first 8 min. I caught my breath and felt a little better, then right as I started the second interval a thunderstorm started rolling in. The cool gusts of wind just pumped me up and kept me going. Though I must admit I was running awefully slow towards the end. Then maybe 2 min after I finished, as I was walking home, it started raining. The rain felt amazing. It was like the Universe was conspiring to help me finish my run .

I'm going to stay on this workout for a few days. I'm not ready for a 20 min run. If I'm solidly on week 6 by July, I'll be well on schedule to "graduate" by my 5K on 8/7.
  • Hi! I'm new here, and new to C25K. I discovered it the first day I signed up for this forum, and I started right away! I have one more workout in week 1 to do tomorrow. I love this program - I get really sweaty and sore and I can actually motivate myself to go to the gym b/c its only 20 mins and 3 days a week.

I hadn't been to the gym for weeks before finding this, and when I had gone before, I was spending like half an hour to an hour on the elliptical machine and not sweating as much as I do w/ C25K. I used to run cross country in high school, and I am waaaayyy removed from that life right now, so I'm happy to be running again.

Have you week 5'ers started running 5k's already? I'm still nervous about signing up for one since I haven't done one in soooo long!
  • hello everyone
    i'm starting again c25k ^_^
    i'm starting at week 4 day 1.
It's been great today. I run without heavy breath and all. Looking forward to next run on monday

Yes. I've done 2. I signed up for a 5k before I started the program figuring at the very least I can walk 3 miles. I only had 2-3 weeks to train, I ran 6x a week, did the best I could and finished in 37 min and some change. I continued with the program and did another one less than a month later and finished in 35 min flat.

My next 5K is 8/7 and I'm hoping to have "graduated" by then and be able to run the whole thing. I'm aiming for a 30min ish time.

I HIGHLY recommend doing a 5K before you're "ready." Something about being in a race just pushes you to leave it all out there. You end up realizing you can run alot longer and harder than you thought. These races always amp me up and get me excited about running.
  • Freedom Reigns how long did it take you hip to heal? can you run now again? i have the same problem feels like its burning/tearing when i walk and can't run until it heals grrrrrr
  • Hey curlysue, thankfully it started feeling better almost the next day (probably largely thanks to the painkillers). This doesn't mean it is totally gone though, and I still notice it as soon as I am walking on uneven ground or I turn suddenly or something. I am going to try running tomorrow (one week later) and see how I get on. If it's the same kind of thing I had and doesn't feel like you've pulled a muscle, take some painkillers and try not to walk for a few days. I'm sure that will help, it did for me, and I still did far more walking than I should have as it's my only means of transportation! I hope it heals up for you soon, it's not a good injury to have when you want to run!
  • Today was my first day back after injuring my hip/a nerve in my hip. And I'm happy to report that I put on my stopwatch, plugged into my iPod, and just ran until I felt like it was time to stop. And it turned out to be 24.5 minutes! Last week I was on week 7, then took a week off to nurse my silly hip, and I am still where I left off. Yahoo!!

I couldn't be happier, especially since my 5k is on Sunday! I have raised £730 for Cancer Research UK, which is $1172 US for everyone in the States! I am so pleased with that, especially as I have an uncle who was told yesterday that he's 'stage 4' which apparently means there's no worse his Cancer can get. So it means even more to me now than ever that I can run it for him and actually run it and challenge myself and enjoy being healthy and alive because it's too easy to get blindsided by things like he did. There may not be a lot of hope for him right now, but if events like this encourage people to donate to helping other families and people who are diagnosed in the future, then I am going to run every one that comes through my city!

Hope everyone else is doing well and getting out there and running! Can't wait to hear how you're all doing!
  • WOOOHOOO!!!!! I'm so happy you're better.

It's amazing that you were able to raise that much money. Good Luck with your race. I know you can do it
  • Thanks Scarlett! I hope I can finish in as great a time as you did!
