I have three tortie girls and a torbie stray who frequents the backyard for hunting. I am completely biased and think that torties are the smartest and most wonderful cats in the world. (Though we call our second cat, Akunta, the most affectionate in the world. While she could give you nose kisses for hours on end, she often gets lost in the house and has to be rescued from the middle of the living room. We think she was given too much anesthesia during her spay.)

Congratulations on your new friend!

I think I've discovered part of the reason she is so fat. My husband was helping a friend move into an apartment in our building and they brought home fast food. Tonka grabbed TWO french fries right out of the bag and took off with them (the fastest I have ever seen her move). She definitely knew what they were, and must have also known that she might have to steal them in order to get them.

I have never had a cat that was the least interested in potatoes or any starchy food, for that matter (except a cat that liked spaghetti, but I think it was the meat sauce she was really after). I'm definitely going to bring it up with the vet at her first appoinment later this month.

She's starting to lose weight already (Sad, that I'm actually motivated my my cat's weight loss, surely if the cat can do it, I can too).

I'm actually kind of freaked out that she has lost so much already. It makes me wonder if there's something wrong (I guess natural, considering her predecessor's sudden passing). The vet appointment is about two weeks away, so I'm sure she's fine, I'm just being a worry wort.
