You can do some things to get a sweet fix without either sugar or sugar substitutes. Stevia (sold often as SteviaPlus) is a good natural, sugar-free sweetener. Don't know if it is actually sold as a sweetener in Canada; it's sold only as a nutrition supplement here. There's another one, Sweet n Slender, that's OK too. Neither one is great, as far as I'm concerned, but they're worth looking into. My husband has found that he cannot lose weight unless he avoids artificial sweeteners as well. Also, if you make your own treats, you can halve the sugar in most recipes without affecting the texture adversely.
A taste for sweetness is a part of our physiology for a very good reason, since it usually indicates good to eat, but we're very overloaded on sweetness. Again I'm not too sure how it is in Canada, but I know that products sold in the US are often much sweeter than their overseas counterparts. If you work now on cultivating a taste for less-sweet things, when there isn't pressure on you to lose weight, it will serve you well once the baby is here & you want to diet again. I've gotten to where I just cannot stand the sweetness in a lot of commercial things.
In the original South Beach diet book, one of the dessert recipes is made of ricotta cheese with some cocoa powder & a packet of artificial sweetener stirred in. If you use a natural sweetener like SteviaPlus, you can avoid sugar and the fake stuff, & still get a pretty good sweet fix. I've also grown quite fond of plain yoghurt with things mixed in like slivered almonds, some vanilla extract, & a packet of sweetener. I can't eat "normal" flavored yoghurt anymore.
