Wow! Things have changed a lot, since I had kids. My twins are 34! I have 4 grandchildren!

All I can say is pregnancy is a strange animal! What works for one, will make another run puking!

At first, the first trimester, the smell of meat, or meat cooking made me want to hurl. After that, food cravings/choices were just goofy. Mexican food, the hotter the better, chili, ate gallons of it! Raspberry sherbet, LOVED!

Tuna, which was a staple for me, gave me God awful heartburn. And Pizza Hut, GAG! I normally was not and still am not a Coke fan, but pregnant, loved the stuff. Coffee! Pre preg, and now later, love it. Preg, it tasted like dirty swamp water.

I did stay active, due to the fact that we only had one car, and the DH, worked 10 miles away, and I only worked 10 blocks away, so I walked. I was 132 when I got tagged. 195 at delivery. Natural delivery, thank goodness. Lost 35 pounds in 3 days! Got back down to 140, in 3 months. At that point in time, 1980, my doctor was ok with the gain. Then, for me, 30 pounds a kid was the norm, so 60 or so was ok. I was mortified! How did my body betray me?

Actually my body did not betray me, it was just busy making 2 people! That takes a lot of energy!

I would not trade the pregnancy and my boys, and my grandchildren, for anything in the world.

Each pregnancy is individual. Between myself and my 2 sisters, we have 7 kids. Each time was a new journey.

I think we need to try and be as healthy and fit as we can, leads to an easier delivery, but we also need to be thoughtful, about what our bodies are doing, and practice patience, because, this is a time, that no matter how much you want to control things, mother nature might have different ideas!

I totally agree! I wish doctors weren't so strict and condescending about it now. Because I'm already overweight my doctor felt the need to call me obese and doesn't even realize how hard I already worked to lose some of the weight and how hurtful that is to a pregnant hormonal woman! He said it was better for me to not gain, or even lose. I haven't gained much, but now I'm self conscious that he will reprimand me if I haven't lost weight. I wish he would have been more sensitive.

I just want to thank you jeminijad for this thread and diary of your experiences. My husband and I have been TTC and I'm showing early pregnancy signs. I'm mostly happy about this but sad about the progress I've been making on my weight loss. I am obese with a BMI of 32 and am not interested in packing on a bunch of extra fat "just because."

I think eating to maintain your current weight, and letting the baby access some of those stored calories, is an excellent idea and one that I will keep in mind. I've lately been thinking hard about feeding my body for health (instead of just weight loss) and I've been happy on a paleo/ketogenic diet. I think I will continue to eat this way, but also monitor my calories as best I can.

Thanks again and I wish you all the best with your little one!

I'd like to join in and keep this going.

I'm 4 weeks pregnant and have had 4 previous pregnancies that succeeded through to delivery. Each time I gained a reasonably healthy 20lbs -- then packed on about 30 more pounds while nursing.

This time I want to be mindful of what I eat and focus on making good food choices rather than a particular calorie intake. Hopefully those good choices will be ingrained in me after delivery!!
