Acne

  • How many people here have problems with acne? I am having trouble getting rid of my complexion problems around my chin and the front of my throat. Before I knew I had PCOS I was being treated successfully for it with Avita cream and doxycycline. Now I use the Avita cream and also an anti-bacterial cream called Azelex. The breaking out has recently started back up again and I think I may have to go back on doxycycline but I hate to take even more pills. I thought it would straighten out after being on Glucophage but no luck so far. What do you do to control your complexion?
  • Hi Jennifer!

I'm so glad to hear that someone else has break outs on their neck! (NOT that I'm glad you have the problem, just that it's not only me. )

Mine comes and goes. I've been on Glucophage and Vaniqua for the hair. When I'm drinking tons of water every day it seems to help somewhat. I haven't tried anything medical to help it yet, but if it doesn't get any better I might. I'm with you on not wanting to take any more pills - or spend any more money on stuff - this is getting to be freakin' expensive.

I'm sorry I'm not much help, but if it's any consolation - you're not alone!
  • im on doxycycline and being on the diane helps too i think. mine is slowly getting better, i get neck and back too, its horrid, i had a wonderful complexion as a teenager. now im in my 20's it sucks!!! not fair!!!

  • Hello!

I was diagnosed with PCOS when I was a teenager and had horrible cystic like acne. I tried all the prescriptions and over the counter stuff and nothing really worked. FINALLY I discovered Proactiv Solution... you know that stuff on the infomericial??? It has been a lifesaver! It IS a bit pricey, about $50 every other month, but it's worth it! You can also get it (sometimes cheaper) on ebay. I would suggest if you can't find anything else that works, try Proactiv. I LOVE it!

    Hope this helps!

  • hi everyone!

i concur with all of you that this acne problem sucks! i have also found that proactin is a wonderful product! it really does control the breakouts. one of the best ways to control the acne i have found is to limit your carb intake. (eek there it is again--carbs when you ingest too many carbs it raises your blood sugar & that wreaks havoc on your balance of estrogen, androgens, & progesterone. that is one of the theories why pcos sufferers also get acne. try to incorporate sweet potatoes into your diet & omit white potatoes. sweet potatoes have a chemical in them that helps maintain the fine balance between estrogens, androgens, & progesterone. for more information read the book--"what your doctor may not tell you about menopuase"--written by john r. lee md. don't let the title fool you. there is alot of information in this book regarding the female body. hope this helps!
  • Puberty at 30?
I, too, suffer from horrible acne. I have tried the Proactiv solution for 4 months with no results. Guess it's just not for everyone. The only time my face was clear was when I was going to the dermatologist twice weekly as a teen, then it was only marginally better than it is now. Will I still look like a teenager going through puberty at 30? Anyone tried anything else that works?

  • doxycyline
I did the Doxycycline too, and it worked very well for me. I was surprised at how fast I cleared up. It is cheap too, I am thinking my bottle was about 5 dollars and it lasted a month. I 'graduated' and was put on both of the creams but it just doesn't control it. Today I have 3 little bumps trying to surface next to my nose, so I suppose it is time to call my dermatologist back. I don't want to go through this again!

Is the Proactiv solution just a face wash? If so, is it considered 'very gentle'? I use a retinal cream every night and I can't use any strong cleansers on my face.
  • Hi Jennifer,

Proactiv is actually a system. There is a cleanser made mostly of Benzoyl Peroxide, a toner that helps unplug pores, and a cream that you leave on your face all day. I used to have pretty bad acne, even some cystic acne and I used the products prescribed by my dermatologist... which included Retin A. I've never found anything that has worked like Proactiv has! I've referred SO many people and they all love it. I know it doesn't work for everyone, but I don't know one person who hasn't had great results from it. I was very skeptical at first because I first saw it on an infomercial, but I decided to just try it and I'm THRILLED that I did! I love it! Check out their website below. It gives you a pretty detailed overview of the products and how they work.

I also heard that certain birth control pills can help, too.

    Anyway, hope this helps!

  • Gluc can take up to a year to show full success. You may need to be increased on dose.

Yes, I too have heard great results from Pro Avtive users.

Make sure you consult doctor and a pharmasist (sometimes they know more then docs) though for interaction.
