Hi Guys!
I was diagnosed with PCOS this past summer and have been doing well on BCPs - OrthoTriCyclen Lo, to be specific. I lost some weight when I first started, then gained it back and am now losing again. My weight gain was caused by some lifestyle changes and not by the pill. In fact, you could not pay me enough money to stop taking the pill. I had nightmarish yeast infections the first time I went on BCPs in college and it wasn't really until this last time I went to the doc (and got diagnosed with PCOS) that I finally got it under control (nightmare not due to the BCPs - rather due to a resistant strain of yeast - YECH!).
Triphasic pills are working great for me - they help keep my acne under control and I'm not quite as hairy as I was before. In addition, my moods are so much better under control - in fact, I generally warn my boyfriend a few days before the week of "off" pills - I tend to be a little on the crazy side for that week.
I think the biggest thing to remember is to be patient - there are a gazillion different medication combos out there to try and you just have to find a doctor who will work with you and actually
listen to your concerns. and you CANNOT give up!
On a side note, I don't understand this whole "masking" symptoms argument - for me, as long as the acne is under control and I'm not a hormonal lunatic, I'm fine with my symptoms being "masked". As long as I am working on getting the underlying condition under control by getting my weight and my lifestyle under control, I've got no problem with not feeling like crap while I'm on that journey.
Keep on Truckin!
Erin
