About a year ago I was diagnosed with IR and was also told that I had a polycystic ovary which explained my difficult and long periods and bad acne I've had all my life until I got myself on birth control but my periods are still very difficult but I can actually function and go to work and class now with birth control. I've just finished reading the sticky on PCOS. Does this mean that I do have PCOS as well? Or that I'm just simply at risk for PCOS? I didn't even think to ask further questions due to the fact the woman that did my vaginal sonogram acted like it was no big deal and so did my obygn. They both told me basically lots of women have only one fully functioning ovary. I was also promptly put on Metformin but I have not stuck to taking it and am now in the process of trying to get my prescription back and get back on it since I have noticed some of my symptoms from last summer are coming back like dizziness and feeling like my blood sugar is out of whack. So I am wondering now if I should go back to my obygn doctor and ask more questions about PCOS? Can anybody give me advice on this?

The only one who can tell you if you have PCOS is your Dr, sorry.

Hey Blondie-

From what I've read Met is the drill instructor of drugs. If you don't take it regularly, if you don't follow a strict low carb diet it will make you sick. You can also have PCOS but not have all of the symptoms. The only way to tell is just like the pp said, ask the doc to do testing. It's more than just a folical scan. You need to check FSH and LH levels too. Try taking the met regularly and sticking to a good diet with excersize and see if that helps. Good luck!

Definately go back to your doctor and find out what is going on. If you were dx'd with IR, that is not something to play around with. I made the mistake of stopping meds and then not seeking treatment for a few years. Since you are experiencing symptoms again and if the met made them disappear then you should be seeking treatment.

Okay thanks. I didn't really know what to ask for in regards to PCOS. But yes I am definitely getting back on my Metformin to say the least. I've been miserable the past three weeks. My doctor that prescribes me my metformin has been closed up and out of town for vacation. The reason I didn't stay on the medication was that my doctor really didn't act like this was serious or anything. He was really reluctant to put me on it as well, it was my gynocologist that pushed for it. So if my regular doctor won't prescribe it to me I will have to go to my gynocologist and tell her and get the refill from her. It's been a pain. It's only been by research on my own that I've figured out that this can be serious. Thanks everybody!
