  • Oh, I'm not the one with the snow. It's in Cleveland Ohio where the Steeler's are beating the pants off the Browns. We are just getting to see it on TV. But if it's in Cleveland, it won't be long until it comes to us here in PA. I am looking forward to snow. I don't have to go anywhere and I can sit and look out my window and say how pretty it is.

    You had a very low calorie day that sounded good to me. I want to start back eating oatmeal once in a while. I think you are due for a drop any day now. You'll see!!

    We went to Goodwill but the exercise ball was gone. I looked online and they are way more than I'm willing to pay in a retail store, so it looks like I won't be doing those ball exercises.
  • Jacqui_D I actually had to google what slow burning carbs were before I could answer your question. The only time those carbs would be allowed is at RM.

    Carol Sue I don't actually take turmeric in pill form because that with Metformin was doing a number on my system, but I do buy the spice and sprinkle it on my eggs and even on the meat before I cook it. I have been thinking about giving up the Metformin again and get the turmeric pills and try taking them without the Metformin. Still may try that.

    My bs is too high while on CAD. I was thinking about trying Atkins again, but I just might see how the slow carb works as I've never been able to stick with Atkins for any length of time. Saved the links I found on slow burning carbs (Livestrong has lots of info on it) and since I do like fruit the slow carb woe just might be what I need to get my blood sugar back down and enjoy what I eat too. Fasting blood sugar going up is not an option. My biggest goal this year is to get my blood sugar back down in a healthy area.

    I'm thinking more in line of going slow carb and taking one day a week and have a more carby meal like I started when I first found y'all. I thought the CAD would work, but I don't think I can have a carby/rm once a day any more. I think that is what the my high fasting blood sugar is telling me.

    SMF I wasn't able to get my numbers on MFP exactly like I wanted it. I had to estimate but got things close to where I wanted them. I like the sweet potato once in a while and just use butter and cinnamon on mine since the cinnamon is supposed to be good for lowering blood sugar.

    P.Q. So good to hear your brother is getting better each day. It also sounds like you Mom is taking notice of how well you are doing with your diet. Maybe she will pick up more of your habits.

    I enjoy reading what y'all share. I learn a lot and hopefully I can put to work some of what I see you doing successfully.
  • Jacqui_D Thank you for pointing out the slow burning carbs. I read up on slow carb and how it affects blood sugar. DH and I can do this together so I'll be going with it. After all, this is not only about weight loss for me, but it is about getting my bs under control.

    Another phone call from bro this afternoon. He was bored and wanted me to talk about dinner. Before he got sick, he always did this. He so wants some food....I hope he passes his test tomorrow. He said he stood up today and took about three steps with two people either side of him. I'll have to verify with my mom, because he imagines things still. He swore he had green jello and applesauce on New Year's Eve, but he didn't.

    Hubs and I are waiting for the much anticipated season premiere of "Downton Abbey." We're watching reruns of old English sitcoms while we wait.

    Today's menu....

    Break - steak, potato pancake
    Lunch - bourbon chicken, brown rice, white grapes
    Dinner - salad w/vinaigrette, 3-way chili spaghetti
  • What did I tell you about the snow? It was snowing in Cleveland around 2-3PM during the game, and now at 8 PM we have snow on the ground. I should be a weather forecaster! LOL

    PQ, I'm amazed that bro thought he had green jello and applesauce. Our hospital always gives green jello to patients after surgery. I wonder what it is about green?

    I just figured out how to get online on my Nook. I like it much better on my PC but the Nook will work in emergencies. I don't remember what I did with my time before I got the internet. I know my house was cleaner.

    Oh, PQ, that is so wonderful...and Boy, Howdy, where can I get some of those drugs?...I would love to have me some false but realistic memories of food I ate, but really didn't....maybe not green jello, tho...ooooooo I love Downton Abbey, but I haven't seen enough of the episodes to keep track of everything. I'll have to catch up some time.

    Well, I did pretty ok today, but went out for dinner to celebrate DcollegeB's 4.0 GPA from his 1st semester! Can you say "proud mama"? (and "whew"!) It was a somewhat pricey restaurant, but good news is...not much food, ha! (how's that for Weight Loss Logic!) I ordered a shrimp dish that was basically a few jumbo shrimp, sauce, and 3 small crusts of bread. Not sure how to estimate the sauce...I figured 1T olive oil and 1/2t salt...I'm sure there was more salt in there than I usually have.

    So B: oatmeal and coffee (same as y'day)
    L: small salad (same as y'day)
    D: shrimp with bread dish

    The MFP estimate for today is a little over 1100cal 128g carbs. 0.85mile swimming. AND no eating past 8pm. and my brain is dead.
  • Well, for the 1st time since November 6, I get to move my ticker

    I'm still second-guessing EVERYthing...maybe I'm getting too little salt? too little protein? too many carbs? too much/little fruit?...but I stick with oatmeal for breakfast 'cause I like it and things seem to be working.

    Have an eye appt today....cross fingers x
  • I found this recipe on another forum and it sounds good. I don't know if I want to be carrying saurkraut around in my purse.

    Nobody knows it but I make sauerkraut in my purse!

    Well not really, but doesn't it sound GROSS?

    I do mix a cabbage salad for my lunch, though.

    In a quart ziploc, I mix:

    3 - 4 c cabbage (just cram the bag full) and add:
    1 TBS olive or sesame oil
    1 TBS rice vinegar
    1TBS soy sauce (or less to taste but it really wilts the cabbage)
    optional squirt of hot sauce of choice.

    Zip it shut and stick it inside another bag (my lunch bag) in my purse.

    By lunchtime it is well-mixed, and quite tasty.

    You could also make Curtida, using salt instead of soy sauce (no idea how much ... ) and oregano!

    Carol Sue Interesting sauerkraut in my purse recipe. LOL

    My Dad makes egg omelets in a bag. He puts eggs and all the ingredients he wants in it in a bag and then he boils water and places the bag in the water until it is done. Made me think of the boil-in-bag rice. Quite interesting. I had forgotten it until I read your recipe.

    Actually I can see that making the kraut myself would be better because I it wouldn't have so much sodium. And doing it this way would be so much easier than when I used to make it. I used to have a great recipe for kraut, but I lost the book and never have been able to find the recipe on line. Thanks for sharing.

    I went back through the thread and read food plans of some of y'all. I notice some eat a little more carbs than others but they don't eat a lot of it. I also notice that y'all don't eat a whole lot. I plan to take the slow burning carb info I got off Livestrong and using MFP make my daily plan I can make a lifestyle I can live with.

    Carol Sue that actually sounds really good to me. The pickling mixture is similar to what I use to make my pickled daikon. I might try it. I love cabbage raw like that as well as fresh kraut. I eat about 1/4 cup a couple times a week cold. I could probably eat the whole pint jar If the salt content was lower.

    Pattygirl I make just a basic kraut and ferment it for 5-6 weeks. Yum!

    Today's menu.....

    Break - McD's sausage burrito, ice tea w/stevia
    Lunch - 1/2 portion 3-way chili spaghetti, white grapes
    Dinner - chili cheese wrap, side salad
  • Carol Sue Thanks for mentioning the turmeric pills. I had to go out to the bank for DGS as he is still in FL. I had to go deposit his check from work, so I went by Walmart and got the turmeric pills. Started with one today and left the Metformin off to see if it bothers me without the Metformin. I hope it will help inflammation and bs.

    I also picked up a few slow burning carbs. Had my Monday company this morning and she brought muffins. I told her that my FBS was too high for me to eat it. I chose to have a small apple with pb.

    Meal for today

    Breakfast small apple w/2 T peanut butter
    coffee w/ stevia and mini moo

    Lunch chili w/beans, pita and salad

    Snack carrots, celery, hummus and flatbread.

    Calories were under 1300 calories and within the 30% carbs, 45% fat and 25% protein ratio. The amazing thing is that I am totally satisfied tonight and do not feel stuffed.

    As you can see, I'm not doing CAD, but I think I am doing my own form of low carb making it a lifestyle I can live with.
  • I'm considering eating less. It seems on the days that I do track, my calories are higher than I thought they would be. I will not cut out any meals, but make them smaller. I am at home most of the day so it's not like I will be far away from food if I find that I'm hungry. When I worked, I always ate big meals to be sure I didn't get hungry before the next meal.

    I got my Tumeric from WalMart, too. Did you ever hear that you are supposed to have black pepper with it to enhance it's potency? You can order it online with black pepper added to it, but I take one with meals where I add black pepper, like my morning eggs. I add pepper to salads or vegetables too. It seems that as soon as I pick up the pepper shaker I think to take my Tumeric. I plan on buying a spice jar of Tumeric and adding it to recipes.

    I think I mentioned that in the new year my copay for my PCP went down to $0. Well, DH picked up my prescription at Walmart and it was $0, too. I used to pay $12. It's unusual for the cost of something to go down. Every little bit helps.

    Prairie Queen, my step-son makes his own sauerkraut sometimes. He and a friend make it it big barrels then put it in Mason jars. Sometimes it's good, and sometimes it's weak tasting. I have seen recipes for making just a jarful but DH would not want me making anything fermented like that. I would love to make my own. It's so easy to buy things in stores but you can control the ingredients so much better when you make it yourself.
  • Carol Sue I make my own so I can keep the good bacteria/probiotics. The stuff you buy in the store is usually pasteurized or canned at high pressure which kills everything. And if my DH ever tried to influence what I did in the food department, I'd kick his *** to the curb (and he knows it). But he knew what he was getting into when he married me
  • PrairieQueen, do you remember the Friendship Cake that you kept on your kitchen counter and added things from day to day? Someone gave his daughter a starter and she started adding things to it. When it started to ferment he made her throw it away. He will not eat yogurt because it says "live active cultures" even though they are healthy. You are a tougher woman than I am. LOL
  • P.Q. and Carol Sue Y'all are making me want to make my own kraut. I have a crock pot that I never use. I think I'll get some ingredients and make some. It really is good for keeping good bacteria/probiotics. I used to make it because I have a tendency to have a rash from time to time that a health food store owner told me was Candida. I had a great recipe in the book and lost the book when I married and moved to FL. I'll have to see if I can find one similar to it.
