Supplement HELP!!

  • Clearly alot of you guys take supplements and vitamins and things like that-I was reading yesterday in my Medical Magazine that low-carbing will help you lose weight and such but being on it for any length of time may cause brittle bones. Can you all let me in on what you take and what it does for you??

    Thanks!

    Miss D
  • I went to my local health food store and told them I was on a low-carb diet and they suggested one major vitamin regimine that involves taking a set of 6 vitamins/ day (either 2- three times a day or three- two times a day.) The vitamins have the reccomended doses of calcium (important for the bones) vit. e, etc. I balked at having to take 6/day but they explained to me that many vitamins (like Centrum or something you buy at the grocer store) cannon possibly have all the reccomended things in them because they physically can't fit the nutrients into one little pill. I understood at the time, but you know how it is at the health food store. The lady was pretty nice, though, and she didn't try to sell me too much stuff so I think I believe her. I also take one Chromium Picolonate which is "supposed" to help with the hunger/sweets craving. I don't always remember to take my vitamins so I can't tell you how well they work. My suggestion would be to talk to a nutritionalist/doctor/ or the very least, the people at the health food store.
  • Hi,
On any diet, you may not be getting your daily recommended allowance of any vitamin or mineral. No matter what the diet is. Most people don't eat a healthy diet anyway. These articles that are condeming low carb eating crack me up. What do they think the average American's diet consists of anyway? When I started to eat low carb, it was the first time in 10 years that I was actually eating vegetables on a consistant basis. Before that, I was eating junk food and tons of sugar. I'm sure my calcium levels were not that good either.
Taking calcium supplements is not only healthy it's almost manditory for most women. We just can't get the amount we need from our diets. So, read up on it, ask your Dr. or dietitian.
I agree with amhlawyer about taking multivitamins. I take a package with several vitamins and minerals in it. Plus, I take many other supplements, but they are for specific health issues. I don't think you can get all you need in one pill. But, it would be better to take that than nothing at all with additional calcium.
You may or may not notice a change with vitamins and supplements. It's not an over night thing, it's gradual repair or support of your cells. I do not like to take pills, but I do it everyday now, it's just part of my morning routine.
  • Thanks for the speedy answers...

I usually do not take any vitamins
I did by those One a Day Weight Smart though and am trying to take them consistantly...I did not even take pre-natal vitamins reguarly, so this is a stretch for me.

    Thanks again--
    Miss D
  • TONS OF PILLS....lol
I am diligently trying to make sure I take all necessary supplements, mostly as advised in DANDR.

I wrote out the recommended list, went to the health food store (Nutrition House) as pharmacy brands may not be adequate...and spent a lot of time there READING LABELS....you would be amazed at how many kinds of vitamins there are!!!

I finally found one very close to what Dr. Atkins recommends, and (you take 3 per day) added some supplemental Chromium and CoQ10 and calcium (as these were what was missing). They also have some extras in them such as spirulina and other good stuff. I just bought the small size to make sure they agreed with me.

Just started taking the EFA's....(those huge oil capsule things) and have noticed they do make me a bit gassy...anyone else have this reaction? Is this normal?

    Frouf
  • Miss D, sometimes it's hard to get into the habit of anything. I use to be just like you about taking vitamins, I just hated to. I still hate to. I realized that I have to do all I can for my health now, before more things go wrong with me. So now, I barely even think about it when I take them.
I never did answer your question, I take 1200 mg of calcium a day which is suppose to be 120% of your RDA. Your suppose to take it with a meal, to aid in absorption. The type of calcium you take is kind of a big debate. I've read that calcium citrate is more soluable over calcium carbonate, so it's more readily absorbed by the body. Of course there are the big proponates of coral calcium. It's a personal choose. I don't think coral calcium is really worth it, but then there are lots of people that think it's really great. My orthopedic surgeon says the type you take isn't that important, just make sure to take it.
  • Yes Froufy, they do make you gassy. I tried to take them, but I just couldn't stand them. After a few days, I was gagging on them. I should take them, but I just can't.
  • Did you know that a cup of broccoli has the same calcium as a cup of milk??? and many more vits to boot!!!

I will post later what I take for vits. I need to get gas (for the car not me) before DH comes home and want to know what is for dinner then i forget till am when driving the kids to school and run out and have to push the car up hill to get her to school (good exercise) then slow it back down on the way home then back to the other school for the boys and then to the gas station. (can you say exercise??) I guess I am too tired to think that i can go out later but I know i will not do that.
