Hi All:
Aleka: they were talking about Atkins on our news too!! I order
the Protein Plan tapes, books, etc off of ebay yesterday for $10.00. I like tapes, I listen to them on the subway ride on the way in.
Question: Am I correct in this, If I eat all bran cereal and it is
27 carbos and there happens to be 16 grams of fibre, do I count
my cereal as 11 carbos? I was reading something in Atkins about
subracting your fibre grams from your carbo grams.
Anne.
Hi everyone! This place is MUCH more interesting than work, LOL! I am soooo excited that Atkins is finally getting some serious studies and respect.
I'll post more later, but in the meantime, the losses look very good!!
Aleka, I use a lot of soups (I have two in the frig at all times- homemade) and I keep cooked meats handy. I don't use much if any cheese or cream as those really add up too fast, and are where I've 'coasted' in the past. I decided that they weren't worth hanging up my wt loss over. Without those, I have trouble finding enough points somedays, so I bank them for a week in case I have a hungry day. I require that I eat a cup of veges with each meal, and I usually have a cup of strawberries or other very low count and low carb treat at night... helps me sleep. I can't eat wheat anyway, so I don't have that problem, and I'm used to checking out all processed foods because of that, so I don't eat a lot of them.
When I used to post on a low carb board, several people went in to Atkin's clinic when they had struggles with the diet. One of the main things they were told was that they were branching out too much into the creams, cheeses, and sometimes nuts. So, I'm incorporating that into my current WOE.
I hope that helps. I eat a reallly big breakfast everyday, it is not unusual for it to be 10 points, but then I'm less hungry at other meals.
Anne,
Subtracting fiber is something new with Atkins. Some of the old timers say they still don't subtract it, when I asked the same question awhile back on their boards. The reason he says you can is because your body doesn't use the fiber, it is suppose to just pass through. So, you can if you want, or not. If I'm counting my carbs, I don't, because I'm easily confused but it's perfectly fine to do it.
Su, you have a very balance woe. Very impressive.
It's really late, talk to you all in the morning, Nikki
We had a beautiful day yesterday, it made it to 50 deg. I managed to get to do my walk outside in the afternoon, and from the amount of people I saw they all had the same idea. It's foggy this morning, but they say it's to go downhill from there.
Su, thank you for your tips. When I started WW I switched from full-fat cheese to reduced fat, which is 2 pt. for 1 oz. Then I buy Kraft 2% slices, which are 1 point per slice. This way I can still have cheese and save some points. I LOVE cheese melted on anything and everything What do you usually eat for breakfast? I really miss having my eggs & bacon or sausage.
ANNE, I read the same thing about subtracting fiber from the carb to get total carbs in the PP power book. Also, you have to weigh your protein so that you're getting the right amount. But, I find that too much to think about. To me, it's hard enough to figure out what to eat and what not to eat. That's what was one of the things I loved about Sszing, no counting of anything, then that got too time consuming trying to find the right foods.
nikki, Ya, I'm like you, not agreeing with any diet. I can always find something wrong with whatever I'm doing. Even WW!! But, it's working for me, and that's all that counts. I do eat soy nuts, and I am allowed 1/4 cup, so I just measure that into a bowl and have some water with it, and you'd be surprised how much it fills you up.
I'm back again! I went to see "Sweet Home Alabama" last evening as a treat... I've been in a dull spot lately. It was very light fare, but fun. I had the entire theater to myself! Very creepy on the spooky trailers, but I enjoyed it during the movie. Me and my diet soda, and NO POPCORN SMELLS!
Jennifer, I think the 5 lbs is a fantastic wt loss! Especially for just part of a month! How do you like the cabinets now that they have dried? I admire you for your energy!
Mauvaisroux- If you can't find the whole wheat locally, maybe one of the on-line stores is in your general area. I find it easier to get food shipped in the cooler months.
Nikki- That eggplant sounds very yum! I'll have to try it soon. I just love eggplant!
Anne- I'll have to check out the tapes. I just keep reading and trying to pick things from each diet that makes good sense to me.
About fiber, WW recently backed off their old fiber standards. It used to be that they subtracted points for lots of fiber. Now, they just count up to 4 or 5 gm in the calculations, and after that, all the food values are without deductions. They found that after a certain point, the calories mattered more than the fiber. I'd think it might be similiar with carbs, especially the more concentrated items. But, I tend to never subtract fiber, so I'm old fashioned
Aleka- The walk sounds great! I'm going to try out some of our parks and see where I feel comfortable walking. I live in a congested area.
I eat a LOT for breakfast and it is usually 6 to 12 points. Dining out, I get 2 sausage egg McMuffins and toss the muffins (most of the cheese goes too). At home, I have a cup of veges cooked in butter with at least 2 eggs, and usually some sausage or another meat. As I lose, I have to fiddle with reducing things, but I've learned I have to keep the protien high. Sometimes, I don't have a sausage or other fat in favor of something like ground turkey in a filling for an omlet. I rarely eat cheese, but when I do I like it to be real cheese. I hate the low-fat stuff, and it is usually low-fat with more carbs, not to mention additives. As Schwartzbein says "the cow knows best"
Well, I've been on a cooking hiatus this week. Any more good ideas that you are cooking? See you all soon,
Good morning everyone,
Su, that cooking hiatus sounds like a good deal to me. DH wouldn't like it much though. My daughter and I went to a movie recently and for awhile we had the whole place to ourselves. Then a couple of other people came in. It was kind of spooky, especially since it was a spooky film. People sure don't seem to go to the movies like they use to. I remember seeing the Exorcist in a theater, the place was packed and when there was a scarey scene, the whole audience would scream, which made it even scarier. A time before vcr's and pay per view. I'm feeling very old now.
Has anybody tried that soy slices stuff? It's like cheese but made from soy? I haven't looked at it very closely. I wonder if it's full of chemicals. I need to get some more soy in my diet. Aleka, I'll have to try the soy nuts.
We decided to go to an all you can eat buffet for Thanksgiving. I am just plain tired of cooking a big meal for 3 people and 2 cats, especially if I can't eat most of it. This place has pretty good food and everyone can get what they want. I hope it doesn't take all day to get in there. We've never done this before. At least there will be no leftover dressing calling my name for days afterwards.
Later, Nikki
nikki, we too are going out for Thanksgiving. We started going out when my Dad was alive because there were just the 3 of us, then my IL's joined us, and they liked it so much they've been coming up ever since. The only thing I miss is the leftovers the next day. I haven't tried the soy cheese. I'll let you be the guinea pig If you try it let me know how it is.
Su, thank you for letting me know what you have for breakfast. I've never thought of eating veggies along with my eggs. That's a great idea. Whenever I make scrambled eggs, an omelet, or a fritatta, I always add colored peppers and sometimes chopped broccoli. Well...the reduced fat cheese isn't too..too bad when it's melted on something, but the block cheese is rather rubbery. I absolutely LOVED Sweet Home Alabama. My GF & I usually go to a matinee, and there are a few retirees there, but the theater is far from being crowded. The cooking hiatus is right up my alley.
OK! I have to back up on my declaration I do eat the soy cheese Mozeralla flavored or the hot pepper were the only ones I liked. I use the first in my eggplant bake. I started that years ago, and still do it... somehow it flavors it all so well, and I don't have to use other binders for the mix. And, I get some soy, which may be a very good thing!
One more thing I was wondering, does anyone use soy milk? I tried it once and I didn't like it, but I was wondering, maybe it was the brand? If anybody drinks it or knows a good brand, please let me know. Otherwise, I'll be the guinea pig for that too. Nikki
Did any of you see the news story that they are revamping the Food Pyramid that de-emphasizes carbs? I saw some of it on ABC News last night. After the story Dr. Timothy Johnson was on to give his opinion, and he suggested that everyone get a good nutritional book, and forget using the current pyramid. If you go to www.abcnews.com and click onto HEALTH, you can get to the story.
I was checking out the carbs on low cal jello pudding mix and it
states 7 carbs per serving. What I can't figure out are the carbs
coming from the skim milk you are suppose to add to the product?
I noticed great chocolate mousse recipes that call for diet pudding
but if that carbo count is not including the milk it would be
high as heck once you add it.
Weather here is gloomy and cold. We are going to get flurries
today.
I am feeling especially happy because my Boss is away.
Hi everyone,
Anne, you must be practically dancing with your boss away. My DD has a really aweful boss to deal with too. Why do they put people like that in management positions? Is there some job requirement that says you have to be a real to get the job? I don't know what to tell you about the pudding. I looked at some mousse at the store the other day. It said it was sugar free and low carb, but it had 9 carbs per serving. I don't see how they really figure the low carb thing. Milk, even skim, converts to sugar. Maybe that is it.
Su, I found the mozzerella and hot pepper soy cheese at the store yesterday. I was so surprised they had it. I'm going to buy it the next time I get groceries. Thanks for suggesting it. Do you use soy milk? Do you have a favorite brand?
Aleka, I'll have to check that website out. I'm glad they are finally revamping that food pyramid. I am really tired of Drs. and nutritionist pointing to it like it's from the Bible. Thanks for suggesting the Eden Soy, I'll try it.
I did the whole cardio sculpt exercise video last night. I guess it's not that hard, but I do feel like I've had a good work out after. Plus, I really feel stretched out.
Have a great weekend everyone, Nikki
Yeah, I'm still here I have been very busy this week and not posting much.
Aleka~thanks for the info on that article and I am going to check out that hold the toast site too!
AnneD~woohoo! You got a break from the big bad boss today that must have been a treat!
Nikki~I totally agree with you on the manager thing
I was the manager in retail for several years and I didn't treat people like that and my boss never treated any of the employees like that either. She had a good, hardworking staff who were loyal to her even when things got tough during the recession, which to me works better than having people dislike and distrust you. I think that the *****y boss mentality is very old school and doesn't make for a very productive workplace.
I went to the ss website but I didn't see anything about her new cookbook there Maybe it has only been released throught the HSN shows.
We went to see the new Harry Potter movie~it was great! I haven't read the books but have seen both movies and now I am thinking of getting the books.
Hi to Su, Jennifer ~thanks to both of you for the flour reccomendations

Mauvaisroux,
I shouldn't have generalized like that. I guess, my experience with my bosses was being reflected too. I have had several managers in the 20 years I worked. Only one male, who was always trying to get the women to sleep with him. I had probably 9 female managers and only one good, human one. I sure wish more employers encouaged managers to show compassion and to make work as enjoyable as possible. At least not to make the employees feel so underappreciated and crappy all the time. I'm sure you were great to work for, wish more people were like you.
