What about yeast overgrowth...

  • When it comes to message boards I'm addicted. I look at several but only post at two of them. One of the sites that I post at once in a while is having a discussion about yeast (Candida) overgrowth.

    I'm wondering if yeast isn't the culprit to my sinus problems and also my feeling of being run down all the time.

  • That was really interesting. I was kind of surprised at how many yes answers I had. This is something I've never considered before. Thanks for pointing it out. I'll have to learn more about it. I'd talk to your Dr. when you have your physical.
  • You know I've heard of this before but to be honest with you I would have never thought that I might even have a problem with yeast because I've only had one yeast infection. I never knew that yeast could do other things to your body.

    Doesn't sugar feed yeast....wonder if that's why we crave the sugar?

    I would love to hear some input for some of the more experienced low carbers....anyone know anything?

    I did some research on this a couple of months ago. I bought a book called "The Yeast Connection". It really helped me to pinpoint some issues I'd been having health-wise that I'd just "learned to live with". I began taking some "good bacteria" and it made all the difference in the world. My Dr. wouldn't go along with my yeast-overgrowth theroy, so be warned that there are a lot of sceptics.
  • There are ALOT of sceptics Chrissy......but if you think some of your problems are due to yeast, then do the lowcarb/yeast prevention diet.

    When I started Atkins, I also didnt allow myself, cheese, vinegar, mushrooms, mustard......anything that helps yeast grow in your body. I did this for 2 weeks during induction. I have since put a bit of cheese and a small amount of mustard ....very little vinegar, I will sub lemon juice instead.

    I noticed a considerable difference. I too had bought the yeast connection book, and several others (which I lent out and never received back) and 75% of the troubles I was having, including weight loss was due to the excess yeast in my system. My yeast problem flared up again when I took antibiotics a few months ago...after which I gained 20lbs. Once I had the yeast under control, the sugar cravings were gone!

    As of right now, I dont crave sugar at all, but I do crave savoury foods.....creamy stuff, super tastey stuff. I induldge once a week, but still keep it low carb.

  • Here is a yeast questionnaire. I have heard from some people that have problems with this and the yeast free diet doesnt' sound like a whole lot of fun! However, to get rid of some of the problems, it would be so worth it. Hmm, I hadn't seen the question 'do you have a hard time losing weight' before though. Accckk! This could be a link! Oh well, with low carb, there aren't many yeasty things left for me anyway.

  • Hmm, I noticed the link I put on my last post is actually a place that sells the supplements to get rid of the yeast overgrowth...but the questionnaire is from the Yeast Connection Handbook and not their own sales pitch, so it should be legit.
  • the lack of fun is no fruit for a few weeks and other than that it is a diet very similar to low carb and many people think low car is no fun
  • Really? I thought a lot more things were off the list of acceptable foods. This is probably something to look into for me, it would answer a lot of things that I never thought of as being related.

    Maybe I should try this.
  • Jennifer, from what I'm reading you have to aviod things like sugar...DUH we already do that, cheese, and vinegar. I'm still looking around to see if there are more foods to avoid.

    I'll get back to you guys when I find out the rest of the story.

  • This is of interest to me too. Normally about two weeks before my period my breasts swell and start to hurt until a couple of days before it starts. But this month it did not happen (I've been low carbing it for a month). My doctor said it's because of yeast - i.e. that I have not had much of it. So I wonder too.
  • Wow! I'm going to have to look at this more since I am plagued with yeast infections since I was in my early twenties. Hmmm...find out soemthing new everyday
  • Interestingly, mozzerella and cream cheese are okay on a yeast controlled diet, other cheeses aren't. Nuts and seeds are not as they gather mold easily (gross). There are a lot more veggie choices, but you have to carefully wash everything.

    One thing I read say you can have bread/cheese/milk as long as it's toasted or hot so that the yeast is killed. Still not eating the bread, but a cuppa no-sugar added cocoa (8gm carbs from milk sugars) sounds really good.
