Question How to count carbs?

Im a bit confused about the counting carbs, the atkins way. Aside from keeping with my fitday carb count, I dont alot for fiber or protein in an item.

Also, when I purchase an atkins bar, its already done for me, when looking at some of the other low carb bars that dont have the "usable carbs" on it, I wont buy them.

Can someone clear this up for me....ive tried and several times, when im done, the product doesnt have any carbs left
Thanks
Robin

I don't know if this is what you are asking...

Take your total carbs, and subtract your fiber from it. That is your 'net carbs'. Lets say it says 10 carbs on the package. Look under it and see if it has any dietary fiber grams. Lets say for example it says 3. Subtract 3 from 10 and you have 7 net carbs.

You don't want to subtract sugar. Sugar is straight carb. Some people will subtract sugar alcohols because many believe it does not affect insulin, but that is a controversial subject! You don't subtract protein at all.

I hope this was what you were asking.

Hey Robin! I agree with Jennifer about the 'net carb' issue. The Atkins bars claim that they only have 3 net carbs. But the package lists (as I read off the Pralines and Cream bar I just scarfed down)
Total Carbs: 18 grams
Fiber: 7 grams
Net carbs: 11. Yet they claim only 3. The others are supposed to have a "minimal effect on blood sugar" and therefore don't count. All I know is that when I eat a lot of the bars I lose more slowly. But they are good to eat on the run or for a sweet fix if you must have one.

I think if you want to lose the maximum amount of weight on Atkins, it's best to stick with meats, cheeses and veggies and forego prepared foods if possible, but that has not been doable for me! I'm still losing even if it has slowed down, and I'm pleased because now I can wear all my winter clothes again (thank god.) It had gotten to the point where my UNDERWEAR was too small - that's when you know it's really bad!!

Its the carbs in the bars I get confused about......something like triscuits, I just subtract the fiber from the carbs, ok, I understand that.
But.....if Im not buying an atkins bar...when the carb count isnt already done for me, ........you know what, I'll just subtract the fiber from the carbs, its probably safest.

Thanks Jennifer and Tilly

I wish you hadn't said the word "triscuits." If you can believe it, this is the hardest carb item for me to give up. I used to go through 3 boxes of triscuits in a week, eating them at least twice a day. I had triscuits with eeeeeeverything! Maybe one day I will be able to add them back in. Robin, any idea what the net carbs are on a serving of triscuits??????

Hey Tilly, Triscuits are supposed to be the best cracker for low carbers to eat. Well, as far as regular crackers go. No sugar, and all of the ingredients are low-moderate glycemic. SOOOO, if you do splurge then you aren't doing 'so' bad.

Robin, I will see if I can find the info about the bars. There was some commotion over it, because people thought it was misleading. I THINK that it had to do with glycerine, an ingredient not believed to affect blood sugar/insulin, however some people do stall when eating it, so they think itmay not be 100 percent correct. Anyway, I do think the difference in those bars has to do with 'inert' carbs. I will look for the info, and if I find it, will post it here!
