Going from WW to Atkins

  • Hey ladies! I've gottten so much great advice, and can NOT wait to start my new diet/lifestyle....(oh, I've decided to wait to start on my birthday.....) but I was wondering if anyone doing low carb USED to do WW? Do you have any comments/advice/etc?
    Thanks!
  • Good luck. I just finished my first week on Atkins. I don't call it a diet, just Low Carb or Atkins. My way of thinking is if I am on a diet, then when I lose the weight I can eat the way I did before and that is how I always gained all the weight back and more. I am getting a lot of encourgement and helpful hints from this site and the wonderful people here. WW didn't work for me.
  • Hi Princess, welcome to the low-carb group.

I have done many different diets over the years. I believe that a good diet must be one that you can sustain as a way of life. It should help you lose weight but it also must be healthy for you in the long run.Of all the diets that I've done, I believe that the 3 best ones were Weight Watchers, Body for Life and Lo-Carb. I leaned alot from each of them and now i incorporate alittle bit of them all into my diet.

Weight Watchers was helpful to me because it got me eating healthier and helped with my food portions. But the 20 minute exercising that they reccomend just wasn't enough. I needed more of a push to exercise. Also , I noticed that i was still eating unhealthy foods even though it fit into my points for the day.

That's when I did Body for Life. That got me to love exercise (which I previously hated) and it helped to tone and build my muscles (and tighten the loose skin).

My problem is that I've had some medical set-backs and was unable to exercise for quite awile. Why is it so hard to lose the weight, but so easy for it to come back on? Now I am slowly able to lift weights again, but I'm having to use lighter weights. So, I need to compensate by taking in less carbs. Which brings me to my present way of eating. I am low-carbing it but not as low as Atkins (do to my medical problems). I am keeping my carbs between 20-50gms/day. Except for my Free Day (once a week) when I go out for dinner and eat whatever I want. This helps me get through the rest of the week (taken from Body for Life).. Good luck and post here often.

You need to find what works for you as long as it is healthy
  • Hi PJ, I left WW for low carb also. WW didn't work for me and my insulin resistance. The best advice I can give you is to FORGET everything you have ever learned and just let yourself go crazy with this. Fat is your friend, and those low fat potatoes and pasta are the enemy...you can do this, just go in head first!
  • Thanks Jennifer! That's exactly what I needed to hear...that it isn't just me...dont get me wrong, the WW worked, but it was so slow and painful....I mean, I just spent $150 for the at work program, fluctuated up and down, and in the end, am no farther than when I started. It was so frustrating.
I know the low carb works, I've done it before, but I just need some support to get back into it...

    THANK YOU!!!
  • Hi PJ
I started off doing the atkins plan for my 14 day induction. It was very hard. I have been doing a low carb plan. I did lowfat but I was always hungry. I lost weight but alway quit after about 30 pounds. My typical day of eating is
    Breakfast
    Yogurt with Davinci syrup
    Low carb muffin
    Tea

    Lunch
Mountain Bread with tuna or cold cuts

    Dinner
    Beef stew
    (Green bean and beef recipe)

    Dessert
    Homemade ice cream
    or
    Cheese cake

Most people don't even know I am doing low carb. I also make my own breads. cakes and other things. You can do it. I have lost 10 pounds in a month. I want to go slow because I want my skin not to sage so much. I have 120 pounds to lose. You have to think about this as a way of life not just a diet. I think that if you go back to the old way of eating you will put it back on faster. Also read different low carb books to find out what is right for you or modifiy different plans.

    Welcome to the Gang!!

  • Hello ~ I came looking for a low carb and/or Atkin's diet thread and stumbled upon this one.

Princess Jihan, I too left the WW point system for a low carb way of eating almost 2 weeks ago. Don't get me wrong, I loved (still do) counting points and it does work but I needed what I call a "jump start". Low carb helps me to lose alot of weight in a short period of time so I wanted to see that jump, that big loss and after a month of it, if I can't stand it anymore, I'll go back to points.....if I can stick with it longer, I will do that. I lost 91 pounds in 1980 doing Atkin's. (we won't get into why I'm heavy again!! ) So come Monday, I will weigh (1 day shy of 2 weeks) and see what has happened.

I agree with Suzanne, go with it, enjoy it. Your have to forget everything you've ever learned about "dieting" to do this. Yes, fat IS your friend!!

  • HEY ZOE!!!
Where in the DFW area are you? I'm in east Dallas, just of I30 and Loop 12. I've been doing LC since about 5/1 and I love it. It has been the easiest WOE I've ever tried.

Welcome to you and to Sandra
  • Hey Princess Jihan!
I just wanted to wish you luck on your low carb plan. I have done the WW points plan and always felt hungry it seemed. Doing low carb really seems to work for me. I feel satisfied longer since I have upped the protein and fat in my diet. So far I have lost 8 pounds in four days!! Talk about keeping you motivated. Let us know how you are doing!

  • Sandra ~ I am in the east side of Tarrant county, around 820 and I30. Wow, you've done so great since 5/1!! Keep up the great work. I weigh tomorrow although I can feel TOM coming so I may wait. Just a 'thing' I have. So if I have to wait until next week to weigh, I will. Keeping my fingers crossed. I've been so OP, so 100%.

  • I just finished a year on WW (not to mention all the money I've paid in). I was really gung ho about it but my enthusiasm quickly waned when I saw how slowly the pounds came off. It took me just over a year to lose 28 lb and that was staying strictly OP (except for a brief fling at Christmas where I gained 4 lb back and it took me the next 3 months strictly OP to lose them )
I'm still going to WI at WW because I prepaid for a few more weeks.
My doctor recommended I go back to low carb because my morning blood glucose levels have been out of the safe zone ever since midway through my year on WW so obviously all that bread, pasta, rice and fruit weren't doing me a whole lot of good.

I've now been back on Atkins for a month. I lost 5 lb the first week, which was encouraging. Then I got a bit giddy with my success and overdid it with some macadamia nuts and gained back 1 lb. Then peanut butter was my next binge and I gained back another 1 lb. Last week I stayed strictly on Induction and lost 1 lb. So, it really hasn't been a rapid weight loss for me but losing weight isn't the be all and end all for me. Wellllll, yes it is, who am I trying to kid. But the side effects of being in ketosis are another wonderful benefit. I feel so much more energetic. No more mid-day crashes. No more wild cravings for sweets (I don't consider nuts a sweet but obviously I have to learn some restraint. ) No more bloated feelings and no more wondering when I can eat again and WHAT I can eat when I do. After my breakfast of bacon and eggs, I don't even think about food until mid-afternoon. That's when I'll have a snack of cold meat and salad or some other low carb food.
This weekend I made low carb ice cream and I can see where I'll have to learn even more restraint, but it has proven to me that I can still have lovely, luscious desserts and stay OP on the Atkins plan.
I also did Atkins many years ago (mid 70s I believe) and lost a LOT of weight but got scared off by the "experts" of the day telling me I was going to kill myself. I had never felt better but who was I not to believe them? So I now have over 100 lb to lose and this much older body is less willing to give up those pounds no matter what method I use. But, I'm less anxious about it and more willing to be patient and take the slower road.

This is a very healthy, nutritious way to live and I highly recommend it.

  • Wow! Thanks so much to everyone for the encouragement! I officially started the Atkins plan this morning, as yesterday was my birthday!!! so it's a fresh start for me,and i'm really excited....
I'll check in later and write some more!!!
  • Hi Everyone- I'm sooo happy to have all of you in my corner. I'm brand new to Atkins(just started today) but I'm certainly not brand new to dieting! I'm 28 and have probably been on at leasr 28 diets in my lifetime!!! I actually recently joined LA weight Loss but I was so disgusted with the fact it was all about money to them that I decided to cut my losses and do it myself! it's not going to be easy but I'm so happy I have this site to help me along my journey. I have about 100 pounds to lose-I'm not "officially" engaged yet but I know the ring is coming soon and I want to be thin when I walk down the isle in 2003!!
I do have one question though-since I am a chocoholic/ice cream addict I was wondering if anyone had a good recipe for homeade low carb ice cream. Thanks! Talk to you all soon!!
