Hi everyone, I haven't been doing this long, only about a month. I have fallen off the wagon more times then not, but now that I'm home I plan on takng this seriously. I was doing the high carb, lw fat but I started gaining weight. First I thought it was muscle, because I run and do aerobics and walk, but I started adding inches, so that told me something was wrong. I have been rather suspicious of high protein low carb, but decided to read up on it.I got Dr Atkins book, and Protein Power book and realized what they said made alot of sense. It is hard to unlearn 20 years of misinformatin though. Meat and fat terrifies me, but I'm geting better. I can understand why Dr A got so frustrated with the flack he was getting, because everyone, my DH is on top of the list gives me a hard time on my food choices. Just thought I'd say hi and I am looking forward to getting to know you better. Judy
Welcome Judy!! (my MIL's name and she is wonderful!!!)
welcome to the group!!1 you will find a wealth of support here.
as a weight lifter and know may others following PP what you will find is that you will need a higer carb level that whati s reccommended. I usually try to take in about 50. I have been lowcarbing for about 2 years and weight lifting for 1. Please do nt hesitate to ask questions the better you have in knowledge the more likely this will work for you. I can say that at 42 i am in better health than i was at 15. my cholesterol is better than perfect, my muscle to fat ratio id decreasine, and well i even started to run. by the way which books have you read?/ PP or PPLP? and Atkins has the first book then a life plan book too. both the second bood reccomends a slight bit more carbs than the first. but the bassis is the same .. you will find that you have so much more energy and your muscles willa ctually build with the plan and you will loose the fat fast if you keep up your exercise as the muscle will just start to pile on. many experience a increase in weight while dropping size while starting this plan (after the initial loss) that is the body finally getting enough protein to counteract the muscle wasting that goes on when people cut the calories and do not take in enough protein. the body will break down the protein to glucose so that is where you get the muscle wasting qwhe people cut their calories they cut protein.
the other things is that contrary to what many people believe this is not a high fat diet. you can lose weigfht eating high fat this way but if you are anywhere near goal or stuck you do need to watch the total fat intake. Basically if your body takes in 3500 cals and only burns `1800 then you can run the risk of not losing. you usually will not gain but your body will excreet the extra fat (unbenonst to people fat does not begot fat, it is the insulin that makes people store fat from glucose) so you can take in a higer caloric intake with this diet, but to really lose weight on a steady basis when you get to a point that you slow down then you do watch the fat. so to relive DH's mind this IS NOT a high fat diet!!!
and if he has any questions have him take a look on the PP board!1 there many people fanatically follow their diet and you shuld see some of their numbers and i will say about 1/3 of themm do weight training or very strenous acvtivty daily so there is not danger of decreased energy levels.
OMG I have rembled here I will shut up now!!! LOL please if you have questions ask!!! and please join us on the daily, so we can get to know you!
Hi Judy and welcome to our part of the 3FC Henhouse. There is lots of support and good advice here - and not just on food choices!
Hope to see you around often.
hey there judy... you'll be just fine. just listen to these wise women around here. i just love it when nasus and ruth get on their lecture horses!!! i learn SOOO much from them.
and if you're REAL nice, i'm sure nasus will even share the references she did while researching this stuff, just so you can wave them under the noses of doubters.
I was exactally where you are a few months ago. I've alway been very opposed to low carb diets, thinking them very unhealthy. My DH had weight loss surgery and his surgeon put him on a low carb diet and I started researching it. I too have all the books Atkins, Protien Power, Low Carb Lifestyles, and Carb addicts. I have taken all the information I have read and managed to put it into a plan I think I can live with for the rest of my life. I have lost about 30 pounds.
I ride the exercise bike and do water aerobics for exercise. I have had one knee replacement this year and will have the other one on the 25th of this month. That has hampered me from doing any heavier exercise.
Like everyone has said this is a great group of women. I think I'd want to hang out here even if I didn't do the low carb WOE
The only problem I have with them is that they are all a bunch of early birds. I usually don't get to the computer until after work and by that time everyone else has posted and started on the next day (just take a look at the times of some of these postings)
Hi everyone, Thankyou for the warm welcome.I've been signed up on the board since May, but didn't realize we had a LC section. I didn't decide to do this until end of May first part of June. I have done this diet before, but had to give it up because I was tired all the time. But with the supplements I take, that doesn't seem to be a problem this time around. I really appreciated the information you shared with me Nasus40. I hesitate to say I'm an athlete, but at 50 it's almost a given if you become sedentary, you start falling apart. I started lifting weights on my 50th birthday, because I wanted to strenghthen my bones, and aerobics, because my flexibility had gone south. I started running just to prove I could, my oldest daughter, and my son said I was too old to start something like that, well that is all it took to get me started. If you say I can't I'll prove you wrong. I've read Dr A's New diet Revolution, Protein Power by 2 Dr's who are obesity specialists. I've since picked up 4 more boks on the subject, including a carbohydrate Addicts life change book. And a paperback book that a registered nurse wrote that is an overview on most of the LC diets out there. So far I like PP the best. I picked up PPLP today at Barnes and Nobels in Silverdale. I want to know all I can on the subject. I hope to get to know all of you better, I've explained to my DH that this does not exclude carbo's just limits them, I also watch my fat intake, and only do Olive Oil, and Butter and natural fats. I'm really new at this so am glad to learn all I can, because knowledge is power. Have a great evening. Judy
great post, judy!!!! you'll do just fine with your new changes. doncha just love stubborn, opinionated, contrary folks???? LOL!!!!!! you'll fit right in here... in fact, come sit next to me!!!!!
and barb, i've been watching your numbers, and they're VERY impressive... almost as good as old alvin's!!
Hey Jiffypop, being stubborn and contrary is the only way to fly. I hate being predictable. Thanks for the kind welcome. You'll probably hear from me quite a bit because I have alot to learn.I have a stack of books to read now though, now I just have to invest in a good LC cookbook. Any suggestions will be appreciated. Judy
Good going, Judy! So smart to research before plunging in.
Check out the recipe section here in this Forum - more are being added all the time. I have a huge file of low carb recipes that I got from www.atkinsfriends.com and will be plugging them in as I find the time. Please post any "winners" you find in the appropriate recipe section.
Judy please ask me tomorow i have one you can down load for free it is put to gether from one of the PP folks from the board. printed out it is about 120 pages!1 amny great thing in there I will post the site here later so all can down load. or pm me and i can forward it to your emal addy.
just be aware the PPLP book can get VERY technical and some of it is over your head you need to read it several times before it sinkd and this is said being an RN. some times it makes more sence reading it several times.
Thankyou everyone for your suggestions, and I would be pleased if you would send me the recipe booklet to download nauses40. I haven't seen the carbohydrate addicts cookbook, but will keep looking. I will also check out this website and Dr A's and will probably get some great ideas. Thankyou for warning me about how technical PPLP can get. I'll just digest it in little amounts so I understand it. I also worked as a nurse for many years, so it is nice to talk to a kindred spirit. Have a safe 4th of July. Judy
