So I thought I should introduce myself. My name is Barbara and I have been following the Atkins WOE and have lost 12 pounds my first 12 days of induction. I am hoping that this WOE will work for me as I have tried many different things. I have read several posts and it seems that everyone is very supportive and is just bursting with information.I am in desperate need of both. It seems like I do fine for the fist couple of months and then mess everything up. I need all the help I can to break this evil cycle that I have created.I have another 60 pounds to lose and really want to reach my goal this time. Thanks for listening.
Welcome to the Low Carb Forum. You are right - lots of info and support in this wonderful group. Please join us on the DAily where we sort of babble on about life in general. Folks sometimes post specific questions or problems on a different thread so they don't get lost in all the clucking and cackling!
You are doing really well on Atkins. Keep up the good work!
let me add my welcome too. it will take time and many falls but with the help here you will get past your roadblock. this support is the only way for me. it is my mainstay and i would still be really heavy if it was not for these girls. so hang in there and welcome again.
i'd rather post jokes. in fact, i'm SHOCKED that so few of you ahve seen the Classes for Men thread that i started!!! after the DH stories of the past few weeks, this'll really make ya'll happy!!!
but never mind, barbara, i'm just teasing everyone.
welcome to the cacklers and gabblers. and so many sages and smart-a**es [like me!!!]
seriously. there's a tremendous amount of support and caring around here. and i look forward to seeing more of you, and less of you...
Hi everyone...........
I'm an "old" WW lifetime member...... reached goal 3 times! The most recent time I went back (about 1-1/2 years ago) with dh, he lost 35 lbs in 6 months - I lost BARELY my 10%, and gained most of it back...... the new points system just wasn't cutting it for me.
A couple of weeks ago, I had a physical - then the doctor called with the blood test results When he said I HAD to lose weight (maybe 60 lbs worth!) I told him that WW was no longer working for me....... he asked if I liked meat -- told me to do Atkins! Could have knocked me over with a feather!
Well, I just finished 2 weeks of induction (plus 2 days) and have lost 8 lbs...... believe me, I don't think I've ever lost 8 lbs in a MONTH!!!!! I'm feeling terrific, starting to have more energy, sleeping better, etc. The only problem is, I'm getting bored!
Due to dietary restrictions, I do not eat pork or shellfish...... and I also cannot mix meat and dairy at the same meal. I'm getting really tired of "Fish or chicken" "Chicken or fish" for both lunch and supper........ It's a hassle for me to get to the butcher, so I have no beef in the house, but hopefully, I'll be able to get there within the next week or so.....
Anyhow, to make a long story longer anyone have any suggestions as to how I can make eating more interesting?
Sams - I don't do Atkins, and must admit that I've never even read the book....so, please forgive me for what may be a stupid question. Why can't you add more variety with fish, shrimp, dairy or meat at the same meal? Maybe if you post some of your daily menus it and some of your specs for eating habits it may help?
Wow, Congrats on the terrific weight loss! Looking forward to getting to know you!
and i'll bet sam is the most adorable grandson ever borne, isn't he..
i've never met a person who kept kosher and was on atkins. i'll ask around for some ideas.
but actually, a few years ago, there was a cookbook published [ok, maybe it was 15-20 years ago!!!] on italian jewish cooking. and i don't think it was big on pasta or other carbs. i think the emphasis was on vegs and fish. there might be some ideas in there.
will you eat tofu? black beans? pinto beans? that kind of thing? they will boost your protein intake and give you some variety.
and i didn't see turkey on your list. but some folks just don't like it. chicken sausage??? but that you'll probably have to get at the butcher. liver??? some people think it's gross, but others love it.
it sounds as if you will have to get to the butcher. lamb, veal, beef, are all ok.
and of course, you can have lox. assuming your blood pressure can handle the salt that is.
let's see... is there anything else i can think of right now???? not at the moment.... but i'll come back if i can...
and good luck to you. you're off to a great start...
Mamaj - I don't eat pork or shellfish, and I don't mix meat and dairy because I am Jewish and keep kosher......
Yes, Jiffypop - Sam IS the most wonderful, adorable 2 (almost 3)year old ever!! and now his little sister Rosie is coming right up behind him in adorableness!
I'm definitely going to look for that cookbook you mentioned - If I can't find it at Borders or Barnes & Noble, then I'll just have to check out Amazon. Thanks for the tip.
Turkey is high on the list - we cook a whole turkey almost every week, so there is always some in the house - when hungry, I've been know to cut off a large piece for a "snack". I like beans, altho they don't like me too much I've never had tofu that I know of, but will try to get some to try - know of any good recipies to try? As for lox: I'm in love!!! As a matter of fact, my blood pressure is the best number I have! Kind of low. My supermarket doesn't carry it (only the nova, and I like the belly kind!) so I have to go to the bagel store for it, but it sure is worth it!! As for liver - I'm one of the few people i know who actually like it (only calve's liver, tho) - but I have high cholesterol, so until it is under control, I try to stay away from it.
Trying to prepare food around here is kind of interesting - dh is on WW, so he eats baked potatoes, rice trilogy, bread, etc etc etc - while I look on sort of enviously. However, I eat HUGE cheese omelets (made with real eggs and butter!), or brocoli & cauliflower with a real cream and cheddar sauce -- after all, turnabout is fair play, I always think!
As for my eating patterns, for the next month or 6 weeks, I am working 4 - 11pm, and I have to leave home at 3:15 to be there by 4. Therefore, at around 1:30 or 2 I try to eat my hot meal of the day, and I bring with me a salad filled with either turkey, or chicken or perhaps a can of tuna...... I'd love some portable suggestions tho. It's kind of hard, since I don't have an official meal break, just try to eat whenever I can.
hey sam and rosies grandma!!! i guess the main question for your working world is whether you have access to a microwave... that would certainly make your life soooo much easier, what with the leftover things and now that glad or rubbermaid or someone has come out with those covered plates and bowls, it'll be easy to tote along.
as for tofu, some folks think it's best in smoothies in place of milk. for that, use the silken tofu, which is very soft and smushy, kind of like a soft custard.
there's also the firm tofu. to cook it, slice it about 1/4 inch thick [or a little thicker], and then wrap it loosely in several layers of paper towels, and weight the slices down with a plate for 15-30 minutes.
you can either use them directly now in stir fries or soups or whatever, or dust them with cornstarch and brown them in some oil before adding them to a pile of veggies.
tofu takes on any and all flavors you add to it, so go ahead and marinate in italian dressing, or basil oil, or soy sauce or teriyaki sauce, or the list is endless.
some folks on this board make wraps with nice large romaine leaves instead of tortillas [nasus, i think], so you can load it up with lots of stuff and enjoy.
