help on low carb?

  • hi there can anyone help me out my DH wants to try low carb diets but we are both 100%ignorant about what you eat and what you dont could anyone take the time to post do's and dont's or a yes list no list just so he has some idea what hes getting into all help will be appreciated
  • The easiest and cheapest thing you can do is go to the library and check out a few low carb books. I would get Atkins, CAD ( I think it's Carb Addicts Diet ) and Protein Power....if you REALLY feel like reading you can also get Sugar Busters too. By the time you flip through those you will have what you need to decide what plan you might like to try or what conbination of plans as some of us do.

    Hope this helps

  • That is what I would suggest. It is hard to know how to do it with ut having some back ground on what you are doing. when you understand why and how then it makes is much easier. It is not a no carb but a low carb and you need to eat smart carbs, so to understand that the best suggestion is to go and pick up a book. I do not want to sound like we do not want to tel you what it is about nor do we want to make ti more difficult but the rationalization behind it is quite complicated

but in the mean time while you are reading. stay away from :
    breads
    cereals
    potatoes
    any thing that contain sugar
    macaroni

eat all the veggies you want with the exception of peas, corn, and squash ( the winter squash),

eat lots of meat and you wil find that you eat a lot untill your stomach starts to get smaller (the breads are just fillers and you tend to eatmuch more if you eat the starches) the reason for this is the carbohydrates will form a kind of cocaine like substance in your brain and you will have cravings for them

think of the last time you were full from eating and some one said have another piece of meat and you could not find room but then the cake came out and voila there as room??? wel that is because the brain said you will make room for it is it gives you pleasure (in the firm of the derivative) and then your body will crave it.

for the first few days you will have cravings like mad, you will find your self almost obsesed with the thought sof eatin some sweets then it will be any breads or stuff. like that. stay strong for the first few days then it will get better. when you have these craving make sure you eat. have some meat on hand and eat it. have some hardboiled eggs, cheese, fat foods will help satisfy the hunger and cravings. also drink like you have never drank before. make sure you get in about 75-100 oz of water daily. this will be hard but it will help and your body will need this as it is detoxifying from the change of burning fuel. you may feel headaches at this time that is the carb withdrawl this wll pass within a week and many feel very run down at this time but i promis you within a week you will start to feel so much better, and then you will realize that you have never felt better in your life!! (I am not kidding) You will feel energized, and sharp, less tired, your heartburn will be gone, you will no longer suffer from any headaches except one from work and even then they will be far and inbetween the one thng i will stress is that even though at this time you will want to start to exercise please wait till your body has adjusted to burning the fat beofre you start any exercise that is about 3 weeks. and please check in with us regularly if you have any questions. it is important, and youmust get a bok and read it. Protein power life plan is the one i follow. it is very good with wonderful explanations and list of what is good for you but i will admait that it is almost too much info for the first time low carber. I have started with Protein power the first book and that was a great start. atkins has a great book to I understand that the second beek the new diet revolution si very good. I have not read that one but many here have and really enjoy it.

the difference in the plans are very little. PP in my oponion had great explanations and from people who had read them both is it a bit more liberal and easier to follow, as there is some fruit alowed (very small quanties untill you get closet to maintanance. I have no problems with either one.

CAD is good if you shose to get that one i would recoment getting the cad lifeplan that is a bit more detailed in what is and what is not alowed. the bassis fo that plan is NO carbs all day then you have 1 hour to eat a meal that is balanced with protein vegies and carbs. this does not mean eall whole hog during that hour is is balanced. I found that the hour got longer every day, which is against the plan basis and that is not going to help you. but many do great on this plan the loss is a bit slwoer but you can lose and it is a great way to break into low carbing

one very important thing to know is that your husband will lose much faster than you no mattter how good you are and how bad he is. it is the nature if women to store the fat till the cows come home and them men to burn it off.

I hope that this helps and get you started till you can get a book and read it. but please make sure that you chek in frequently.
  • Favorite Low Carb Snacks
Currently, my favorite low carb snack is a 2-carb protein bar called Carb Solutions. 2 grams carbohydrate and 22 grams of protein. I'm also grateful for the existence of no sugar Jello and Cool Whip. Not quite the Rocky Road extravaganza that I used to have every night, but enough to kill the evening sweet craving. I'd like to know what other people's favorite low carb snacks are.
  • I agree with the low carb bars mine currently is the EAS bar Advantege the lemon chees4e cake and the cookies and cream flavor!
  • Hmmm...haven't seen that one. I'll have to look for it. Where do you get them? Lemon cheesecake! I could cope with that.
  • i'm beginning to think that protein shakes could be helpful to low-carbers... and here's why...

some of you know that i've recently had a gastric bypass... and here's some of the info the docs have told me...

    eat your protein first!!!!

protein helps weight loss, helps prevent fluid retention, and keeps you feeling full longer than anything else.

eat a minimum of 60-80 grams of protein a day. i am supposed to eat 100 grams a day because there's so much of me to lose.

drink lots and lots of water

and here's the kicker: it's nearly impossible for anyone to eat this much protein without supplementation. 3 ounces of chicken give you about 20 grams of protein. 3 ounces of fish give you about 22 grams. it's not enough!!!!

so, maybe it'll help to figure out how much protein you're getting and then deciding how to reach the 'magic numbers' here.

of course, there's also the nutritionist who had the nerve to tell the support group that 'the surgery prevents us from absorbing calories, but we still absorb fat.' now, if any of you can find any sense in that statement, please PLEASE let me know!!!!!

    good luck to all...

  • Hi, all--

Flumper, how cool that your DH is willing to be your partner in this! Mine is trying to be supportive, but it's inconsistent, to put it mildly. I agree that your hubby will lose much faster than you. Even out-of-shape men have more muscle than most women, and muscle burns calories faster than fat! That encourages me to keep up with my strength training!

For about five weeks I followed a pretty good low-carb diet I got from my nutritionist, which jump-started my weight-loss program. I didn't have headaches or anything, possibly because I was taking plenty of vitamins supplements, and WATER, WATER, WATER! I had cravings at first, but I felt great--lighter and more energetic after just a few days. Mostly I was bored because I wasn't being imaginative about how much food was still available to me. I really like fruit, so it was hard to only have a two servings a day, and I love grains, like whole-wheat bread and cereal. The other challenge was getting enough fiber, once things like bran cereal were no-nos.

So my advice is to remember how much you like veggies--steamed, soups, stir-fried, salads, casseroles, whatever--to give you variety as well as fiber.

jiffypop: What brand of protein shake do you like? I have some, but have had a hard time choking it down! Do you mix it with milk or anything?

    Good luck to everyone! jaelynn
  • One more thing--

I was just looking at the Sugar Busters threads, where they have a one thread that includes recommended books and websites. Here's one that might help: Confused About Carbohydrates?

    http://www.healthwell.com/delicious...y_97/carbos.cfm

    Bye!

  • Lotds of good info on this trhead. However, flumper was asking about low carb for her HUSBAND who has since decided Low Carb is not for him right now. Spoke with her on chat - they have all sorts of websites.
So I am closing this thread.
