Different fits do seem to vary in size, at any store, in my experience. How new/old are your size 8s? I've also found that the older the jeans are the smaller they run, I guess due to vanity sizing.

I have a pair of size 12s my friend gave me, from Old Navy, that are from high school (so we're talkin' late 1990s here), and the fit is HORRIBLE total mom jeans, but they fit around the waist just now, yet I'm wearing size 6s in other brands, and a pair of jeans I got from Old Navy in late August that are size 12 are absolutely HUGE on me now, won't even stay up. Who knows.

But YAY for fitting in a size 4! That's so freaking awesome!
