Default Size vs Measurements. What the...???

I need a new winter coat because my old coat is way too big. Since I live in Lansing, MI and I also working in Bismarck, ND twice a month, a good winter coat that fits is really a necessity. I've been looking in catalogs and I've found a winter parka for a reasonable price that I really like. Now, in the past when I ordered clothing, I ordered according to size. At my heaviest, which was just a bit under 300 pounds, I was in size 26 to 28. But now, I'm not really sure of my size for the coat because I've lost around 60 pounds.

So to figure out my size, I took my measurements and went to a size chart in the catalog. HOLY MOLY! According to that size chart, I'm a size 30 to 32. There is no freaking way that I'm that size. This is a catalog that I've ordered from for years and even at my heaviest, a size 30 - 32 would have been too big for me. I looked at a couple of other catalogs I have and at a couple of online sites from which I have routinely ordered clothing over the years. They all say that according to my measurements, I'm a much larger size. I'm either 26 to 28 or 30 to 32. I've never fit into 30 - 32. I know this is just flat wrong. I'm fitting into size 20, sometimes size 18 clothing now.

What in the world is going on with these measurement? Is it that my body style is considered to be straight (banana) or spoon shaped? The waist sizes in these things look ridiculously small to me. Yet, I know I fit into much smaller clothing than those charts say. Color me confused.

Well.... maybe you are doing it wrong? Maybe looking at the wrong chart (child, male, female)

When I buy a coat it is always small-medium-large, no numbers at all. I'm currently a large

well, you'd have to use your measurement even if you buy the numbered coat. especially now that you lost so much weight. try to find out the spec. of the coat you want before buying unless you can try on.

I have the same trouble with those size charts. I don't know why, but I'm a "spoon" as well so maybe that's it. It's really annoying!

Coats often run small, though, so you'd be better going with a 20 if you have to choose. Or if you're ordering from Roaman's or Lane Bryant, go with their "large." You can always send it back, although that's a hassle. Good luck!

If you can try to order from somewhere that you can go in person to return if possible...I live near Bismarck ND and do most of my shopping online, but try to make sure the company has a store in Bismarck in case I do need to return things....

Yeah, if I go by my waist measurements, I should be wearing 2 sizes bigger than the so-called skinny jeans that are comfortably loose in the waist and look like straight legged jeans, not skinny at all. I swear they just pull the numbers for these charts out of their hats.

It's the waist measurements that are really the culprit. I have two pair of Lane Bryant's jeggings. Both are size 20 and the waist on both are now too big. Yet, according to Lane Bryant's size chart my waist size puts me in a size 26.

Are both measurements in inches or CM?

Otherwise I'm not sure, I suppose just try something on in a store and see what size it is. Or order it and return it for another size if it doesn't fit. Clothing sizes don't make any sense though.

Good luck either way!

I experience the same thing. Going with waist measurement I should be using a size 16 UK, yet I wear a comfortable size UK 12 on top. In Topshop I'm a size UK 10 in trousers.

A waist measurement of certain size does not automatically correlate with a certain clothing size.
