I could be wrong, but I kind of agree with this. The sizing overlap between plus and Miss is super confusing and does not make sense to me, but as far as large dept stores go Macy, Lane Bryant....The sizing seems to be consistent with its self and each other over the years.

I try not to worry about it TOO much, but it's tough when you try not to obsess about weight and more on size. I've bought 2 pairs of the same jeans, same brand, and one was perfect, the other was so small I couldn't get them past my hips.

I just pulled out some 8's from their hiding place :lol3: They are both Gap brand. One still has tags on because way back when I fit into 8's, I had bought them...and they were too small. I just placed them on top of other pair of Gap jeans, and there was 1 1/2 difference on waist. :fr:

Yesterday I was buying shoes. Some 9s fit me and others didn't (in one pair I had to try on a 10). When this happens, do you consider it "vanity" sizing or just different sizing due to manufacturig?

Somebody mentioned Old Navy as being notorious for "vanity" sizing. I think Old Navy is notrious for screwy sizing period. I'm a 3x everywhere but at Old Navy I can be an XXL (I guess you guys call that "vanity) all the way to a 4x. I find it very problematic because I do a lot of ordering online. You just never know what kind of sizing any item is going to have. I've learned to wait until people review their items before purchasing. And even then it's still questionable whether the item will actually fit.

Some pants are simply cut differently. If you're buying skinny, straight leg jeans and you've got hips, you might find that you're sizing up. If you're very narrow and you're buying something curvy fit, you might find yourself being swallowed by the item. Just depends.

I bought a pair of jeans today at Macys. They are size 4, really. And I am not a size 4 yet.
Nordstrom also has vanity sizing - I wear Calvin Klein dress size S. Just no way these are true sizes.

Hey Resipoo, I just wanted to respond to you. I send you hugs. I really see your point. I particularly feel you on how rough it is to hear (even if it isn't directed at you) that your size whatever is really a size whatever PLUS TEN. My mom used to say things like this to me when I would celebrate being able to shoe-horn my wubble into a smallish pair of pants, and it scarred guichita.

I also kind of feel like the notion that THERE WILL BE NO CLOTHES FOR THE THIN is not in my feeling of reality.

I recognize that my reality is really different from many women.

In my reality, I am quite poor, too poor to regularly buy new clothes. Any clothes I buy either come from a Buffalo Exchange (where I trade in 10 old things for 3 new ones) or from the St. Vincent de Paul thrift shop.

In my reality, there are SO MANY SMALL SIZED CLOTHES TO BE HAD! For real cheap. Not only are they really cheap, but they are often easy to style into awesome outfits that get me compliments all the time. I like how thrifting makes me more creative. My recent acquisition is a Talbot's tartan skirt from the nineties that I wear high up on my waist; I hemmed it to above my knee, it was a little dowdy before that. It's a size 8. I've got size 12 through zero in my closet. I choose to keep it real and not stress over the number. Eyeball it, try it on! Lots of things don't fit, every now and then something does.

In my reality, the rather slender have more choices of clothing at different price points than do the plus sized.

:)I truly appreciate your words and support. I've been having a really difficult time lately while I work through my divorce and food issues. I'm very committed to losing weight, but I'm rather insecure about weight and clothes sizes. I knew I shouldn't read a thread about "vanity" sizing, but I did and then got triggered.

My issue with sizing variation (or vanity sizing, or whatever you want to call it) is that it makes shopping so much more complicated for women that it needs to be. I would like things to be simple -- I measure xx size, so I can pull that size off the rack and have some reasonable expectation that it will fit. But the way things are now, you just never know. Even the same vendors can vary sizing over time. I find it frustrating - at any weight.

Everyone deserves to have properly-fitting, flattering clothes. And the number on the "size" label should be irrelevant.

this is true. I just ordered a jumpsuit from Armani Exchange. I haven't had anything from this vendor before... So, I ordered TREE different sizes (8, 6 and 4) and still not sure if it'l fit. They may have true sizes and I should order size 10 or extreme vanity size and I need size 2. And I need to pay shipping to return just not needed stuff.

It is just crazy.

I have some Armani jeans and they are cut narrow.....but they are at least 5 years old, from my skinny days :) I look forward to hearing if they are vanity sized....somehow I think they have not...hmmm

The jumpsuit size 4 is perfect on me but the top - sizes S and M extremely small :dizzy: I havent tried the top size L because it is too long.

I had a vanity sizing issue at Costco yesterday. I bought a dress, size 8, thinking it may be a tad bit too small... I got home and tried it on, it was HUGE! I went and exchanged it to size 6, and 6 is too big. I need to get it in 4. -- Even though being size 4 sounds flattering but there is no way in h3ll that a woman who is still 7 pounds overweight wears size 4. :crazy:

Oh, you're referring to my size 6 jeans aren't you? :) Yea, I found the same thing. My 'real' size 6 jeans won't get above my upper thighs but the stretch jeans from Target are actually starting to get a tad big! Then I bought another pair of size 6s the same day and they don't have a snowball's chance of fitting me either... bizarre but true. My husband asked me my pants size and I said "i have no earthly idea!".
