Hair, skin & nails supplements generally contain Biotin plus other B vitamins. If you are deficient in Biotin, taking such a supplement may help with the health of your hair and nails. If not, it won't do anything. You can also just look for a general Biotin supplement.
I used to take one 1000mcg of Biotin a day I really didn't see any difference, I bought 5000mcg Biotin and it did help my hair a lot and my nails a lot. But my skin got super greasy and started getting cystic acne on my face. I usually get one or two of these every so often but EVERY pimple I got it was cystic acne when I was taking the Biotin. I stopped taking it and my skin cleared back up and back to how it normally was. This is my experience with something that actually did help my hair grow faster and my nails harder. It could be different for you, I'd totally try it out though.
Are you talking about Dr Lessman's from HSN? I looove that stuff. I seemed to get better results with his supplement rather than just Biotin, it's just a little pricey for me right now.
I've taken the Sundown brand Biotin (cheap) don't remember the mcg's, but it works really well too. I must be deficient in it because when I am regularly taking it my skin is like silk, my hair is so much softer and stronger, and my nails grow like crazy.

I had to reply, but you are so lucky you can take it and have no side effects from it. I was really disappointed when I figured out that the Biotin was the problem behind my acne.
