I don't want to argue with what each of you have experienced, but I have always been treated the way mkendrick describes above. Sometimes, I even think to myself, "I look really crappy today and I'm 20# overweight, why on earth are people going out of their way to be so nice to me?"
And I live in Boston, so it's definitely not that people are so nice here! :p
