For about 4 years I've been using GHD's, a few times a week usually.
I stopped using them last October as my hair had started to smell singed when I used them.

I'm pretty sure they aren't broken as when a friend used them, there was no smell. I've assumed my hair is just a little too thin for the temperature on these straighteners?

Whilst I'm pretty happy leaving my hair in it's natural state (It's pretty manageable as far as curly hair goes ) I do miss having it straight now and then, and would be interested in getting a new pair, but I'm worried in case I get the same problem of singed smelling hair

I have naturally wavy/curly hair, which is fairly thin in texture, and not especially thick, it's about 5" past my shoulders in length.

Any recommendations for straighteners for thinner hair/ones with lower heat settings would be really appreciated

I have been using Sedu hair straightener. It's kind of expensive, but it was worth it. My hair is curly, but thick. There are three different settings on it. I think the manual said to set it on the first one if your hair was thin and fine. It works great on my hair, and I have tried many others that did not.

I love my Chi--I have the one with adjustable temperatures, and I set it right at the middle. I've read that anything over 350 degrees can cause permanent damage to your hair.

I actually use one of those extra large barrel curling irons to straighten mine.Mine has different settings so I can adjust the temperature on it,and that gives me the option of having it straight,or giving my hair a bit of waves.

I have a Chi, and I like it. I still get the singed smell every once in awhile, but I put in a serum afterwards and then it smells good.

I have a Chi that I bought 8 years ago. They're a bit more expensive than others, but it's still going strong. I have fine hair also, and have never singed my hair or had a funny smell.

Sedu is the greatest. I have one also. Definitely worth the money.



@serendipity907 - I suggest using a heat protecting spray or serum to protect your hair before you flat iron.

I'll have a look into the Sedu for now I think the Chi is an American brand?

I have always used the Paul Mitchell heat protection spray

I have a Hai 2 and I love it. It has wide ceramic plates and adjustable temperature setting. It's great because I have fairly curly, really thick long hair (to my waist) and it only takes about 20 minutes for me to straighten. I use a Paul Mitchell heat spray too, it's wonderful.

I have a Chi also, but I'm also a fan of a good conair straightener if it gets the job done...some of them have adjustable settings too. I have thick hair, but I use my straightener so much that I worry about my hair. I use a paul mitchell smoothing serum on my hair while it's still wet, and after my hair is dry and I'm getting ready to straighten it, I spray Kenra Platinum hot spray on it..which I love.

I bought a CHI a few weeks ago and ADORE it (to replace another high end brand). If you live in the US you can get them for a very decent price at folica.com - the regular CHI does not have heat settings though.

I try and make it a habit to use the CHI Iron Guard with it. It seems to make my hair even straighter as well.

I have both the CHI and the FHI

The FHI is better hands down!! it leaves my hair silky and shiny and moveable...where as the CHI just kind of...straightens with no body or movement

I love my GHD IV, it straightens my hair better than any other straightener I have ever used.Definitely worth the $200. I think you need something that you can adjust the temperature on to avoid damaging your hair.

I'm another CHI fan. I bought mine 7 years ago and it still works great. My sister has gone through at least 3 of the cheap ones since I bought my CHI. It's worth the money, and you can sometimes get a good deal if you bid on ebay. I have never heard of the FHI, but I might need to check it out
