I find the hardest time to go shopping is when I am between sizes. It can be depressing. You have a month. Keep looking and don't give up. Any Ross or a thrift store or actually any store will get new stuff in so hang in there and keep on losing and keep on shopping. There will be better days. You may find the perfect suit the day before your first interview. But you will find it.
Just another thought. What if you bought the ones that fall off you and have them tailored?
Some things to be careful of with tailoring down in size is that you can't make armholes smaller (the fabric is gone) and you can't make the crotch higher (again the fabric is gone) - unless the leg length is too long/deeply hemmed and the waist is too high, letting you bring the waist down.
Ughhh. Yeah, I guess in retrospect I could have gotten the too big pants and had them taken in (but really we're talking really big, I'm not sure what how much bigger/smaller it's reasonable to expect, since I'm not the kind of person who normally has stuff tailored -- I use that iron-on sewing tape to hem up all my pants). But I didn't and they're probably either gone or un-findable.. (Can you tell I'm feeling kind of pessimistic?)
I'm gonna go out again next weekend and see what turns up.
...also, Lane Bryant carries nice looking dress pants and jackets to match. probably cost a little over a hundred dollars for both, but you can get a lot of use out of the pants, they go with anything really!
I got my spanx at layne bryant for 36 dollars. They really make clothes lay nicer. My problem is that I bought my spanx and they are too big now!! wooo hooo!!! I am trying to hold off till jan to buy another smaller pair.
I've always had good luck having alterations done at a locally owned dry cleaner. It wouldn't hurt to ask how much experience they have if you are concerned.
Stay away from department store alterations, in my experience department stores are where I've had poor alterations done.
I just had a dress altered at a dry cleaner and they did exactly what the pins told them to do. Unfortunately, everything that needed to be altered apparently wasn't pinned, so now the dress pooches out at the sides right above the waist band. So, mixed reviews on the dry cleaner alteration process... the stitches look great, the job was done exactly as she thought it was supposed to be, the woman doing the pinning didn't do such a great job...
I've never used a department store, but I have used alteration shops before, I'm thinking I'll try one of those today to try and finish the dress.

I use Assets (Spanx sold at Target) when I need to squeeze into a pair of jeans that are normally too small. Hopefully by the end of my challenge I will be able to get into the jeans with no Spanx needed!
Hm, this is a good idea. I have a lot of office-appropriate clothes that are too tight, and I've been hating the idea of buying new clothes since the others don't fit right.
Maybe these would tide me over a little until I can wear my suits without sucking it in.
