Egg Whites

Sooo--I read all about egg white omlets and egg white this and that. But what do you all do with the egg yolks--like do you throw them away?

Was wondering, as it seems like a waste of an egg yolk.

I guess I could feed them to my husband--he will eat anything.

Meg 03-29-2004 12:17 PM

Chris -- I use Eggbeaters, which are egg whites in a carton. Very convenient but not cheap. Other people just separate the eggs and throw away the whites.

I tried something new today which may gross everyone out, but here goes. I dumped a cup of Eggbeaters in my nonstick skillet and cooked them until they were set and browned like an omelet and then flipped it. I dumped on 1/4 cup of SF syrup and heated it until the syrup got bubbly. OMG -- it tasted like dessert!

MrsJim 03-29-2004 12:55 PM

I toss the yolks meself

What I generally have for breakfast is 1 whole egg plus 3 whites. That way I don't toss out nearly as many yolks and I use fewer eggs. Sometimes I use Eggbeaters if they're on sale...but generally eggs are the cheaper way to go (even with throwing out the yolks). My local Safeway sells a 60-egg carton for around $8.00 and that's why I buy - or I go to Smart & Final where I can get 18 extra large eggs for $2.59.

Meg - that sounds like a souffle!

SeekInnerThinChick 03-29-2004 01:36 PM

Here are some ideas, but also try Joy of cooking:

Egg yolks + olive oil = homemade mayonnaise with no added sugar

Egg yolks + milk = custard

Egg yolks + sherry = syllabub and other whipped drinks

Baking, obviously, and egg glaze for baked goods.

Egg yolks also make a good face mask for dry skin, because of the cholesterol. You can also give them to your cat, if you have one, the yolks are good for their coat.

And I wouldn't toss all the yolks anyway-- they have a lot of nutrition despite the high cholesterol. I always have one in my omelet.

jiffypop 03-29-2004 02:00 PM

don't some people hard boil the yolks and grate them on top of stuff?

and meg... grandma used to make us jelly omelets... yummmy. comfort food!!!!

MrsJim 03-29-2004 02:11 PM

Knowing Chalupa del Fuego's tender stomach, if I DID feed him yolks, he'd probably hork it back up. (of course we're used to him doing that at least once every couple of weeks or so...)

I've heard of dogs being fed egg yolks for shiny coats, but this is the first I've heard of giving them to cats. Doesn't mean it's not true of course...

Ah well, I don't bake often or use mayo (and I have oily skin to boot!) so into the garbage disposal go my unused egg yolks...

tucsonchris 03-29-2004 07:29 PM

Thank you all for the help. I dont eat many eggs, usually just have cottage cheese and fruit for breakfast. I do eat hard boiled eggs at lunch and have been tossing out one of the yolks (have 2 eggs at a time).

Thankx again

MrsJim 03-29-2004 07:38 PM

Someone out there HAS to invent the yolkless egg - it would be a great invention! (okay I admit that sometimes I feel a bit wasteful tossing them yolks... )

Okay - the Yolkless Egg goes on my list of stuff that should be developed, along with the Dissolving Dryer Sheet (I can't be the ONLY one who hates picking up those used dryer sheets that floof all over the place am I?) and of course, the Totally Calorie Free See's Candies (yeah like THAT'll ever happen!).

How about self-cleaning teenagers? Non-shed kitties? Even pre-measured PB?

Mel 03-29-2004 08:50 PM

Hmmm...my dog's skin is flakey now because we've been feeding her low-fat dog food. Thanks for the idea. Mine usually go down the garbage disposal in a 4-1 ratio. I'm sure the pooch will enjoy it and it's a heck of a lot cheaper than the fancy oil that I was supposed to buy for her.

MrsJim 03-29-2004 08:55 PM

Actually I learned about the Dog Egg Yolk connection through a Peanuts comic strip I saw a long time ago where Charlie Brown told Snoopy he put an egg yolk in his dinner to make his coat shiny! :)

JEC 03-29-2004 08:55 PM

its definately the case - yolks make their coat shiny. I love it and feed them yolks about once per week.

HEY Tucson Chris!! Welcome Neighbor!!!

I'm in Tucson too..I chatted with you before in chat. Glad to see ya here!!

LOL @ Hubby will eat anything!!! Sounds like mine!!

Eggs, Yolks and all, are very good for pets. I give my rats, cat, and dog eggs and they gobble them down. They all have very soft glistening fur. Course the dog and rats get bathed too...that also helps.

dowsx4 03-30-2004 09:19 AM

do you give the pets the eggs raw or cooked? The idea of eating raw eggs makes my skin crawl!

caligirl 03-30-2004 09:55 AM

egg yolks

Hi all! I eat lots of egg whites and just wanted to chime in. I just toss the yolks and don't feel a bit guilty about it. I think that sometimes we feel like we have to eat something because we paid for it. Great example is in a restaurant... you may not be hungry enough to eat your entire entree - but you don't want it to go to waste. Your health is a priority now! And eggs are cheap. Don't worry. Please forgive the awful pun -- but it's better to go to waste than to waist. ;)

Cooked!! :sorry: Sorry for the confusion... I scramble the eggs up for them. I would NEVER feed my pets raw eggs for the fear that they might get samonella poisoning and keel over.

Mel 03-30-2004 07:59 PM

OOPS! Cleo the Wonder Dog loved the raw yolk that was drizzled over her food this morning. I never even thought about salmonella. Is that in the yolks as well? Shoot, it's hard enough getting breakfasts cooked for the people in this house, now I have to cook for the dog??? :?:

Meg 03-30-2004 08:10 PM

I recall reading that the chance of getting salmonella from raw eggs is about 1 in 10,000. Perhaps Cleo is willing to play the odds?

3fcuser1058250 03-30-2004 09:22 PM

My view on throwing out the yolk is that we throw out the skin on our chicken and don't think twice about it, we should think of the yolk in the same manner...I buy egg whites in the carton anyways...But I would throw the yolk out if I had to....

Mel 04-06-2004 06:14 PM

Cleo has informed me that she's a gambler. I dropped an egg this morning and she got it all before I could even bend over.

SeekInnerThinChick 04-06-2004 06:52 PM

Animals just love them. The raccoons and foxes used to raid my grandmother's henhouse and suck dry every egg they could find. The yolk does have a lot of good stuff in it, vitamin E and choline, etc. But modern eggs are huge, with a huge yolk-- the ones we had when I was a kid were half the size. But they seemed to taste better, too, so fresh they still had chicken poo on them.

jiffypop 04-06-2004 10:52 PM

eeewwwwww. icky image, SITC!!!!!!!

Noodles913 04-06-2004 11:16 PM

SeekInnerThinChick 04-07-2004 12:41 AM

Just a little yolk for y'all...

diphthong 04-07-2004 07:14 AM

Dogs need protein so if yours is eating just dry food, give him your yolks. Raw is just fine; dogs have a natural immunity to certain bacteria, and don't get the same diseases or sickness humans do, and vice versa. I just started about 6 weeks ago using Eggbeaters and All Whites in the carton. Before that, my dogs got the yolks, scrambled and raw.

Farm fresh are the bestest, warm out of the chicken. I agree with caligirl - we have a thing about waste.

Oh yeah - 'fess up - who hasn't scraped/licked the cake batter bowl or even eaten spoonfuls of cake or brownie batter ala raw eggs?

dip

jiffypop 04-07-2004 10:54 AM

oh back when i was a kid, sure i was a GREAT batter licker!!!

but now... you mean, you folks BAKE?????

Mel 04-07-2004 04:40 PM

I haven't baked anything but home-made protein bars and the obligatory husband birthday cake in 3 years. I used to be the chocolate pastry queen- even have an album of pictures of tortes and tarts I've made. Family is not thrilled, but my son is learning to bake, and learning to hide the goodies from mom! :(

Raw :cookie: Cookie :cookie: Dough Story Here...

In high school I use to run the child care center. Well at the end of the year we'd do that kids graduate thing and bake them all cookies. Well, we had a bunch of leftover dough and so I was nibbling on it here..nibbling on it there...nibbling on it ALL DAY. My teacher warned me..."Angel...you better cut that out or you are going to get SICK!! I know it tastes good but 2 tubes is NOT good for you." I felt fine....until...later. OH BOY.... After I got home I started to feel realllllly queasy/sick. And I got real sick. Yeck. :tied: I learned my lesson. No more pigging out on the cookie dough tubes!!

I admit I am guilty of licking the beaters and bowl...but that's all now! hahahaha and this only happens when I visit the MIL. Noodles doesn't bake/cook. LOL!

3fcuser1058250 04-07-2004 06:43 PM

I used to make cookies and a batch usually makes 40 or so, well I would only get 12 or 20 cause I ate the batter as I was putting the batter on the cookie sheet... only made one sheet! That's sooo gross to me now!

Meg 04-07-2004 07:12 PM

More Raw Cookie Dough Stories!

When you were a kid, did you ever make one of those exploding volcanoes with baking soda and vinegar? If you did, you'll appreciate what happened to my neighbor (swear to God it's true, I was there) ...

She made chocolate chip dough from scratch, which includes baking soda. And then ate most of it raw. And then drank about 2 liters of Pepsi. Apparently the Pepsi reacts with the baking soda the same way those homemade volcanoes do -- lots of gas and bubbling and foam. :o She thought she was going to die for a couple of hours until it all settled down. :D

Jiff, I bake for DH. He's lactose-intolerant and can't eat store-bought baked goods. So we've always got cookies in the freezer.

jiffypop 04-07-2004 08:32 PM

meg... got any chocolate chip? oatmeal raisin?? i'll be right over!!!!!

and that story is enough to make ANYONE sick.. how AWFUL!!!!!

and speaking of baking, i'm actually contemplating making a half-batch of biscotti for easter dinner for peachie and me. we just want one small cookie [isn't that bizarre?????] and we've agreed that we want the plain ones with some nuts. protein!!!!!

Meg 04-07-2004 08:40 PM

The cookies du jour are oatmeal-chocolate chip. Not that either of us would want one, of course!

Ummm ... biscotti .... with a bit of orange peel and toasted almonds, drizzle of melted chocolate .... are you and Peachie doing a big ole traditional Italian Easter dinner?

Mel 04-07-2004 10:05 PM

Hey! This isn't fair, I just ate and now I'm hungry again!!!!! I'd even eat raw cookie dough :D Biscotti??? Jiffy if you are in NJ you can't be too far for me to pop over and grab one with you.

OMG, Meg, that story was funny. I pictured her foaming at the mouth and groaning.

I've never made biscotti- are they easy? Is it like Kamish bread where you bake it in a loaf pan, slice and rebake? Uh-oh, I'm going where I shouldn't go. Time to go to bed.

MAN you guys...

I saw that the Egg White Thread was still going strong so of course I HAD to look...and now I see it's turned into the Raw Cookie Dough Thread! (or the R.C.D.T. ) Oi vey you guys...

Ilene - I have a HILARIOUS Cathy cartoon regarding cookies that just came to mind. I'll have to scan it and upload it here for your amusement!

You know, I told this to Mel and Meg but my baby sister who lives down the street keeps the makings on hand so she can whip out a batch of Toll House Cookies at any given moment. She's MEMORIZED the recipe. Ai yiyi. So last Friday night, I was visiting her and get this. First off, she was slicing a baugette, spreading the pieces with butter and noshing them. Ate about a 1/3 of a baugette...then she put a cornmeal crust PIZZA in the oven (it was about 10" in diameter) and we went outside for a bit. Unfortunately for ME, I hadn't eaten before I stopped by...I wasn't planning on staying longer than maybe an hour or so. So she takes the pizza out and offers me some, by that time I was starving so I had one SMALL triangle (and I mean SMALL). She had like 3, so there was half a small pizza left. She asked me if I wanted to take it home - for Jim... who was at a jam session that evening. WELL I know myself too well - I would've been in that pizza faster than you can say John Jacob Jingleheimer Schmidt! So I declined. Okay, so now we were watching Dateline, and THEN she remembers that she has to bring COOKIES for my niece's softball game the next day. It's 8:30 or so and she starts pulling out the ingredients for Toll House Cookies and arrrggh...making the cookies...and after the dough was made she licked the beater RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME!!! AAARRGGH SABOTAGE!!! I left soon thereafter because I knew once her house was permeated with the smell of cookies that I would be a goner...

Anyway I gave her a talking to on the phone the next day, while she complained about her weight (she's not FAT, but she's getting pudgy compared to where she used to be...) I told her, dang, if she was supposed to bring cookies to the game, just stop by the Safeway bakery and PICK UP SOME ALREADY MADE!!! Her response: "Oh, that's what YOU would do." Damn skippy that's what I would do! Who cares anyway whether the cookies are homemade or not? Sheesh...

jiffypop 04-08-2004 12:26 AM

jack.. i'm starting to fall in love with you... you have a nice dog. you quote hockey legends. you MUST be a nice guy.. can we clone you????

and mel... biscotti are DEAD EASY to make. i'll dig up a recipe for you. but be warned! i don't like the ones made with butter. not quite as authentic. ok. i REALLY mean that they're not like my grandmother's.

but you're welcome to come on over and have some!!!!

karen... i feel your pain. that whole temptation thing is difficult. <sigh> and one of my co-workers, in a fit of holiday celebration, brought in an ENORMOUS basket of candy and snacks.
