We have had good luck with making collars for plants (or even boundaries around more than one plant) using copper tape. The principle is that soft-bodied critters do not like the electrical properties and find it repellent. Googling "copper gardening tape" gives all the right results. We recycle ring-shaped things and then wrap the tape around them. Other options include diatomaceous earth, which works great right up until it gets wet!

DH has six trays of seedlings going. It is still too wet and too cold for most plants. Peas might make it. We have had late cold snaps the last few years and the geography of where we live means that overnight it gets just a couple of degrees colder than the surrounding areas. Typically just enough to destroy any optimistic plants (and cause optimistic gardeners to cry).

Welcome, Pina!

Thanks, Becky. I tried the copper tape on a few plant pots. Failure. Interesting idea about collars.

I am out of synch here but I said to Dagmar that I'm using nematodes this year. We also have a very raised bed with sandpaper all round the top. laced with slug pellets on construction, which was successful last year.

ETA - my post to Dagmar disappeared. Gist was that yes, I have tried beer traps. The slugs and snails told me they were for lightweights. They said this, laughing, as they mountaineered across the first floor windows.
