Maintainers Schooling Their Bodies in Movement Through September
I know I'm not the only one on this forum who believes that September is just as popular as January for making resolutions and setting intentions for one's days.
It's a time of beginnings, of following new schedules, of reassessing how one's time is spent.
It's a time to catch some joy in physicality from the children who've returned to the schoolyards, reunited with classmates and started new sports.
We can do it, too. We maintainers can move throughout the month of September.
A good session of stretching beforehand, inspired by my recent 20-minute stretches in class while the Pilates instructor was out. The teacher has been poring over "Becoming a Supple Leopard" and was exhorting us all to work on mobility and flexibility.
60 minutes elliptical, resistance at nine, alternating forward & backward
Tuesday, Sept. 2nd:
Another stretching session, not quite so long, then
NROLW Stage 6, Workout A, and I swear I can feel myself getting stronger at pulling down heavier weights, though I still have my doubts about hoisting this body that weighs over 150 lbs in a chinup or pullup
15 minutes StairMaster afterward
45 minute spin class at 7 PM, after feeling vaguely guilty all day for not making the 6 AM class before commuting to work. This was a great release of tension on a day when I'd felt vaguely unhappy and disembodied all afternoon.
60 minutes elliptical, just like on Monday, and finding that a good session of stretching hamstrings and hips beforehand helps. Oh, and I absolutely hate the top that I wore to the gym today. It's really clingy, outlines everything. The fabric looked like a good "wicking" material -- I picked it up in a thrift shop and it looked like my size. And it is. But it's made for a woman who wants to show off her hard-won abs, not for a woman with loose skin on her midriff from a large weight loss. This is bound for the giveaway pile.
60 minute Pilates mat class, very tough, as the instructor has been out for a while and we've grown unused to her routines. Oh, and I farted in class twice.
Hi Ward! I gave up the gymn because it was annoying me and it didn't feel safe. So now I do a weights routine in my kitchen (the room with most space). I aim to do this every other day and walk briskly uphill on the other one. Life's been against this plan over the school holidays but now I'm back to it.
NROLW Stage 6, doing one-armed rows with 45 lb dumbbells. But the most I can manage for overhead push-press is 30 lbs in each hand. This is the tough workout that makes me not feel like cardio afterward. I am getting stronger, yes. But the scale? Forget about it.
The usual on a Saturday for me, which is ...
60 minute spin class
60 minute Pilates mat class, a tough one, with people falling back going "oof" and not moving between sequences
Did the Couch 2 5k on Monday, Wednesday and Friday and again today. Supposed to skip a day but didn't feel like it. Did my workout with trainer on Tues/Thursday. Tomorrow DH and I are riding bikes in the am.
NROLW Stage 6, in which I did an underhand lat pull 10x2 with 125 lbs, a new record for me.
Then 60 minutes stretch class, taught by the Pilates instructor, who was subbing for the usual instructor, who runs it like a yoga class. Not easy, but not painful for my left hip.
45 minute spin class, amazed by how dark it was at 5:30 AM and that I needed a sweater, since walking around the city yesterday, even in a lightweight linen shirt, was so uncomfortable.
I am completely off schedule and can't function! We were out of town last week and then my daughter's birthday party was Saturday night, resulting in a useless day for me yesterday. Was supposed to play tennis this morning but it's too wet, but I have not gotten off my butt to go to the gym because my workout buddies are not there today. Oh, and I will miss tomorrow because my daughter has an orthodontist appt. Can I get a virtual kick in the butt, please? Only 72 more days until I turn the big 5-0 ...
Saturday I did spin and mowed the lawn. And yesterday I walked the dog about three miles. Seems I am due for some weight training!
