Maintainers Moving in August

It's August, and in the U.S., we're deep into summer.

It's time to get in touch with our physicality and to live inside our bodies, rather than in our heads.

What is keeping you from moving as naturally and thoughtlessly as a deer runs in the woods?

Wednesday, Aug. 1st:

45 minute spin class, hard to fit in after oversleeping slightly in my new apartment and negotiating my way past the furniture.

krampus 08-02-2012 10:56 AM

Wednesday, August 1 MORNING:
-10 minutes sprint/jog intervals on treadmill
-Back/biceps/chest routine with no rest between sets

Wednesday, August 1 AFTERNOON:
-10 minutes rowing hard on erg machine
-20 minutes sprint intervals program on elliptical, level 6/10

saef 08-02-2012 11:52 AM

Thursday, Aug. 2:

60 minutes on elliptical, random intervals, resistance at nine, and going backward half the time. When the resistance on the hills hit 12, oh dear Lord.

traveling michele 08-02-2012 11:34 PM

August 1: none-- had the oh-so-fun colonoscopy and the doc said no exercise.

August 2: 60 minute walk with a friend; 60 minute Zumba class

Totals:
1 day
120 minutes

saef 08-03-2012 09:30 AM

Friday, Aug. 3:

15 minutes Stairmaster stepmill, resistance at eight, aerobic intervals
60 minutes back and biceps routine, the one with lat pulldowns and assisted pullups
45 minutes back on Stairmaster, dropping the resistance to seven

Sweating like a horse, and feeling really hungry after the first hour.

freelancemomma 08-03-2012 10:50 AM

Wow. You guys make me feel like a total slacker! The only formal exercise I did today (and all I intend to do) is a 3-mile jog.

F.

krampus 08-03-2012 11:00 AM

Friday, August 3:
-Back/biceps/chest routine minus bent over row
-Kettlebell swings, windmills, lunges
-6 minutes on the stair stepper at resistance 11/12

Had to cut it short due to cramps >:(

August 3: 95 minutes bikram yoga. My fave instructor whom I hadn't seen in at least six months. I thought she had moved. The studio never posts who the instructors will be so it's always a surprise.

215 minutes

So my friends tell me. Being with an obsessive personality like me can make a normal person feel weird.

You're fine.

We're our own worst taskmasters.

saef 08-04-2012 12:04 PM

Saturday, Aug. 4th:

60 minutes endurance spin, with weight intervals
60 minutes back in my Pilates class, with all the discomfort and the exhilaration that entails

How is it that even with glacial airconditioning, the humidity outside somehow creeps into the gym, and I sweat like a melting popsicle? I had toe and foot cramps during Pilates despite all the water I drank during spin class beforehand.

JayEll 08-04-2012 06:37 PM

Electrolytes, saef. Water doesn't do it.

Yeah. This thread is pretty intimidating for me. In addition to walking all day with groups of big dogs I do yoga, weights, cycling, kayaking, and paddleboarding. I never post specifically about it though as I don't measure it the way the regulars do here.

Sunday, August 5th:

15 minutes elliptical, manual setting, resistance at nine, going backward all the while, inspired by soundless images of Olympic runners
60 minutes shoulders, biceps and triceps routine
45 minute spin class, which I prayed would be easy, as the weights took a lot out of me.

saef 08-05-2012 10:27 AM

Well, partly, I'm recording it because I have certain measurable goals, which I am closer to achieving.

I want to be able to do a certain number of unassisted pullups, a certain number of different kinds of pushups. I want to bench press a certain weight. And I want to be able to run a 5K at a certain time.

I record my progress the way some people record their weight.

And some people keep a food diary. I've got an exercise diary.

I must say, I am astonished at the number of views this thread gets, so there's gotta be some interest in it, aside from us participants. Maybe because some people just methodically read all the "recently updated" threads, as I used to do, when I first joined this place, and this is among them.

I don't know why you would feel intimidated? You are super active!

I'm like Saef-- I like to post my progress as I keep track of it. I also hope it serves to motivate anyone that might be looking for motivation.

August 4: 90 minutes Bikram Yoga. Dh went with me. :)

August 5: I was going to do a bootcamp class but I'm having horrible back pain. I thought yoga might help. Not sure if it did or not as back is still killing me.

Monday, Aug. 6th:

45 minute spin class, to which I'm rapidly re-adapting
60 minute circuit training class that I talked myself into attending last night, returning to the gym a second time later this evening

krampus 08-06-2012 10:52 AM

Saturday, August 4 and Sunday, August 5:
-A few miles walked, through sandy beaches and sidewalks and paths through woods.

Monday, August 6:
-10 min on treadmill at 7.0 mph
-Back, biceps, chest weights routine. Keeping weights heavy.

saef 08-07-2012 08:19 AM

Tuesday, Aug. 7th:

15 minutes Stairmaster step mill, aerobic, resistance at eight
60 minutes chest, shoulders and triceps routine

And in the evening

60 minute spin class with a weight interval

The weather got a little more crisp and my energy revived.

saef 08-08-2012 09:50 AM

Wednesday, Aug. 8th:

60 minutes on elliptical, random intervals, resistance at nine, which meant resistance went all the way to 12 and down to something like five. Let me tell you, going backwards with the resistance at 12 ...

August 6: travel day to see dd. Planned on Zumba in the morning but decided to rest back.

August 7: went to the Y with dd and tried some classes with her. My back is still killing me but I think it may be improving slightly. I listened to it and tried not to push too hard.

50 minutes body conditioning class-- kind of like body pump
50 minutes kickboxing class-- instructor was hilarious! She was at least 60 and covered in tattoos. She played music from the 80's and I think her moves dated from then too.
50 minutes Pilates class with a young girl that "taught" using magazine clips. She would look at her papers, tell us what equipment to use, and what the moves were. Dd and I were in the back and enjoyed a few chuckles when we did clumsy things like me kicking the stability ball across the room and the band thingy snapping me in the behind! We tried anyway!

krampus 08-08-2012 11:56 AM

Tuesday, August 7:
-20 minutes running on treadmill, average pace of 7 mph with sprint intervals at 8 and 9 mph and 6 mph as lowest speed.
-12 minutes on Stair stepper, fever pace
-10 minutes vigorously rowing on ERG machine
-5 minutes incline walking on treadmill at 4.5 mph
-Kettlebelll swings, windmills, lunges, passes

Thursday, August 9:
-Upper body lifting routine with a few extra sets
-One set of kettlebell lunges, then ran out of time

saef 08-09-2012 12:00 PM

Thursday, Aug. 9th:

45 minutes on Stairmaster stepmill, maybe 20 minutes at resistance of eight, dropped to seven, at the end held the rails and felt lucky to get through it. I poured sweat and felt defeated, as I'd intended to get through a whole hour, and could not.

Went back in the evening, and did 15 minutes more, again sweating hard, though it wasn't as oppressive as in the morning.

Then 60 minutes Pilates class, in which I have to remember to focus on me, not the people around me. There are a lot of attenuated & elegant women with the dancer body type.

Friday, August 10th:

20 minutes arc trainer, hill intervals, resistance at 10, trying a longer warmup and with higher resistance
60 minutes back and biceps routine
40 minutes back on the arc trainer

Hurrying to get in this workout before driving into Connecticut. Usually I work from home on Fridays but I've got that stupid appointment with my doctor today.

krampus 08-10-2012 10:36 AM

Thursday afternoon, August 9:
-5K run on bike path. Time 29:45. Not too bad!

Wow girl! That's fast!

saef 08-10-2012 07:54 PM

That **is** a great time, Krampus. I've been trying to get a 30-minute 5K. (Well, not trying hard enough, as I don't run very often.)

Run like a deer, girl.

saef 08-11-2012 12:43 PM

Saturday, Aug. 11th:

60 minutes spin class, with weight intervals
60 minutes Pilates class

Feeling really wiped out today, as though I am crashing from a long period of tension. I did get through my workouts, though.

Back from visiting dd.....

Went to Bikram Yoga in 105 degree weather. It was so hot during class-- I sweat more than I would have thought was humanly possible. I'm still having back issues but I'm just being careful during class.

August 11:
100 minutes Bikram Yoga (instructor went way over the usual 90 minutes!)

Totals:
9 days
925 minutes

saef 08-12-2012 11:38 AM

Sunday, Aug. 12th:

20 minutes Stairmaster step mill, resistance at eight, aerobic intervals
60 minutes shoulders, biceps and triceps routine
40 minutes elliptical, intervals, from resistance of six to resistance of 11

Strange to be working out in the gym with the spin class and body bump class going on in other rooms. It was a little lonely, just me & a few dudes. But I don't want to take spin class five days in a row, as I've been doing.

Monday, Aug. 13th:

6 AM spin class, 45 minutes, a good start to the day
60 minute circuit training class, which I made despite stopping on a street corner to talk with one of the co-op board members about the plans to build the floodwall & how that was progressing.

krampus 08-13-2012 10:24 AM

Thanks! I am running a 5K in Sept and would like to also make that in under 30.

Monday morning, August 13:
-Upper body routine minus bent over dumbbell rows because some meathead coach and his student put all their 80-90 lb dumbbells on the bench. How about some manners?
-10 minutes very vigorous rowing.

krampus 08-14-2012 11:29 AM

Tuesday morning, August 14:
-15 minutes sprint intervals on treadmill
-Kettlebell swings, lunges

saef 08-14-2012 01:17 PM

Tuesday, Aug. 14:

20 minutes arc trainer, intervals, resistance at 10 and six
60 minute chest, shoulders and triceps routine

Back in the evening, despite my dragging energy
60 minute spin class, with weight intervals
