  • Monday, July 9:
-Nada. Unless you count laser tag...
  • Wednesday, July 11th:

45 minute spin class, which I've decided I'm really going to miss. Now to re-adapt to the style of spin taught downstate.
    15 minute Pilates routine afterward
  • Tuesday, July 10:
-15 minutes elliptical at 6.6 mph
    -10 minutes rowing
    -5 minutes Stair stepper
    -2.5 minutes running
    -Upper body lifting routine: 3 x 8 lat pulldown @ 80#, 4 x 8 bent over row @ 35 #, 2 x 10 bicep curls @ 15#, 3 x 9 bench press machine @ 70, then 80#

July 6: 45 min kayaking. We were out for 1.5 hours but I only actively rowed for about half.

July 7: 3 hours kayaking. Not gonna say we got lost, but we were never going to make it back before dark, so we had to turn around to retrace our steps. A little stressful and lots of hard work!

July 8: about two hours snorkeling

    July 9: nothing except walking

    Totals:
    7 days
    715 minutes
July 10: none? I think I lost a day somehow

    July 11: 1 hour kayaking

    Totals:
    8 days
    775 minutes
  • Wednesday, 7/11:
-2 mile fail jog on bike path. Too soon after lunch and not enough for lunch, plus it is very hot outside (about 86 F). Had stitches and felt lightheaded the entire time.
  • Thursday, July 12th:

60 minutes on Stairmaster step mill, resistance at eight, aerobic intervals. Okay, this wore me down to nearly nothing. I splashed so much sweat on the machine that it probably should be hosed down, rather than simply wiped off. For nine of the last 17 minutes, I took my hands from behind my back and held the rails because otherwise, I would have been stumbling.

Fortunately, as often happens, my iPod got inspired and played me a song called "Blackout" by Carolina Breathe, and the energy in the music and the lyrics kept me going:

    "I'm only getting started.
    I won't black out.
This time I've got nothing to waste.
    Let's go a little harder."

What would I do without music in the gym? Sometimes it's just background noise but sometimes it's what I need.

  • Friday the Thirteenth, July:

15 minutes Stairmaster stepper, aerobic intervals, resistance at eight, easy because I had a huge fan trained on me
60 minutes back & biceps routine, with me again thwarted from using the Gravitron because a guy was on it, and I had to keep my workout going on time
45 minutes back on stepper, again feeling wiped out toward the end ... but I DID NOT grab the rails, I kept going handless

The gym was busy this morning with people getting their workouts in while the morning was still cool & dry. We're having an unusual heat wave in that it has not been accompanied by humidity, so the nights and mornings are bearable.
  • Thursday, July 12

-20 minute HIIT sprint program on elliptical, level 7. Was a real struggle.
    -6 minutes on Stair stepper
    -5 minutes rowing
-60 kettlebell squats, 100ish passing it around my middle.
  • Saturday, July 14th:

45 minutes on Cybex Arc Trainer 750A, resistance upped to nine, one minute intervals. This wrecked me. I planned to do an hour and didn't, and that's rare for me, and I feel vaguely guilty. There is a big difference between eight and nine in resistance.
    15 minutes Pilates routine afterward

  • Sunday, July 15:

Back at my old gym, the one that's just about a block from my apartment. When I left it, it seemed to me to be the acme of perfection. Now, I can see some limitations, though it's still superb in many aspects, like decor, hygiene, personal attention.

But I have to get used to downstate spin instructor style all over again. It's all lighter resistance, constant up & down on the bike, hyperkinetic peddling ... as opposed to very, very lengthy steady rides with very high resistance.

15 minutes Stairmaster stepmill, holding up okay
60 minutes shoulders, biceps and triceps routine, with nearly no one at all doing weights around me
45 minutes spin class with the 25-year-old spin instructor who seems, after upstate road-riding simulation classes, to have ADD because she can't stop hopping around on the bike. I wondered if my workout quality was the same with the lighter resistance but more movement.
  • Monday, July 16th:

45 minute spin class at 6 AM before heading to work, with the manager of the gym, who's a bit less frenetic than the other instructor. But she was intervals with weights. I found the five-pound weights pretty easy on the bike, even for high reps. This was a tough workout, which I probably made tougher by trying to up the resistance to nearer what I am used to.
