Maintainers Moving In October!

silverbirch 10-01-2010 11:01 AM

Thank you, Meg, for starting the thread.

Today I'm continuing to move the saw and the axe. The firewood job is having to stand in for the gymn for reasons of time. Rest assured, I hold my tummy in!

Next, please!

saef 10-01-2010 04:52 PM

Oct. 1: 15 minutes on Concept II, no idea what the statistics were, as I hit the button trying to get a different screen display & ended up wiping out my record. Apparently there is no "back" button on this thing
60 minutes weights
45 minutes elliptical, intervals, resistance at 8, half backward, this thing kicked my butt when it hit the peaks of 11 and 12

I sooo did not want to go to the gym this morning. I nearly fell asleep over my breakfast. Also, we were having a torrential downpour, which the local weather people were half-hysterical over. (All-day news programs makes newscasters more hysterical over relatively common/minor events, which get annoyingly exhaustive coverage.) But I did get out. And got the job done.

But now late today, my throat feels scratchy & sore. So the tiredness appears to have meant I was coming down with something.

sznn 10-01-2010 05:40 PM

Grouse Grind (10th X this season)
2800ft = 2830 stairs straight up.
Slow today 1:05 :(
Need to go for a run tomorrow - Turkey trot is only 1 week away...and my training is non existent.

thesame7lbs 10-01-2010 11:13 PM

Saef, we had the rain yesterday and boy it was all they could talk about on the radio.

Sznn, is turkey the traditional Thanksgiving meal in Canada as well? (with the turkey trot and all). One year I had duck for Thanksgiving and I swear it threw off my entire holiday season.

October 1
5.2 mile run
~52 minutes (forgot to stop my watch)
Unusual late afternoon run due to DD staying home from school (don't ask). Beautiful, cool, breezy afternoon and a most enjoyable run!

saef 10-02-2010 11:39 AM

Oct. 2: 45 minutes spin class
60 minutes Pilates class

Sore throat continues into its second day, and a slight lag in reaction time & a little less energy at the gym. But I feel better than before I went out this morning.

silverbirch 10-02-2010 01:50 PM

And, for an encore, the Turkish get up?? No, not really possible, I know. Hope everyone's doing well, Meg. It's a huge change of pace for all concerned.

Just the usual here plus building a store to keep the kindling dry (ongoing).

A scratchy throat is horrid, saef.

thesame7lbs 10-02-2010 04:13 PM

October 2:
3.1 mile run
31 minutes
Tired legs from yesterday's run. Tired mind & body from being up all night with a wheezing, croup-like toddler. Dropped DD at soccer and ran from there. Went out slowly and realized as I turned to head back that soccer is 50 minutes, not a full hour. Had to hoof it back but made it with a few minutes to spare. Strange run because I held my phone (in case DH called about DS the wheezer) and forgot to take off my sunglasses. Far too many accessories.

sznn 10-02-2010 05:09 PM

Amy - pretty much everything is the same here in Canada as the US...except we pay more for it ;)

Just went and signed up for a new gym - 1/2 walk each way = 1hr walk total.
Hope to get in 3x spin class/wk. That will make it pretty much 6hrs of exercise/wk. If i throw in a few runs - i should see some results.

....not if i could only cut out the extra cookies and wontons:o

traveling michele 10-02-2010 10:38 PM

Hmmmm... I thought I was on yesterday posting but apparently not.

Oct. 1: 40 min run
Oct. 2: 30 min elliptical

Totals:
2 days
70 minutes

saef 10-03-2010 11:03 AM

Oct. 3: 15:06 minutes rowing on the Concept II, 36 s/m, 2:30 500 meter, total of 2998 meters, average 2:31, projected 5984
60 minutes weights
45 minute spin class, with slightly quivering quads after leaving Tricia's House of Pain, so I can't joke anymore about Karen925's quivering thighs sounding like phrase in a romance novel. I had better keep walking today or these are going to be painful tomorrow & I've got to sit on a plane for a good part of the day. Sore throat is gone, replaced with a runny nose, which should also be enjoyable while traveling.

thesame7lbs 10-03-2010 04:01 PM

October 3
8.2 mile run
78 minutes

Fabulous run! Amazing run! Wonderful run! The kind of run that makes people want to run! I came in with so many endorphins coursing through my body, I couldn't figure out why my husband wasn't having a runner's high, too. Maybe because he was sitting on the couch...

sznn 10-03-2010 07:27 PM

I had a great run too - not quite as fast or far as yours Amy.
But great just the same.
11.6k = 73min

saef 10-04-2010 10:30 AM

Oct. 4: 45 minute spin class at 6 a.m. Monday with the die-hards, the real gym rats. When I was leaving, I saw three class members had commenced running on the row of treadmills visible in the front window. I felt guilty walking past them, as if I ought to be doing more.

I'll be sitting on a plane for a long time today, so I was glad to get my exercise done early. I'm flying out of LaGuardia to Denver, and from thence to Kalispell, Montana, to go hiking for five days in Glacier National Park. Back in 2007, when I was over 100 pounds heavier, I would never have dreamed of taking such a trip.

I used to look at "outdoorsy couples" in envy & imagine their lives consisted of taking such trips: Tanned, tow-headed, his n' her cargo shorts, defined quads, rock-hard calves, the whole L.L. Bean (only more expensive boutique brands), probably from Colorado but now living in NY & going up to the Catskills every weekend. These couples seemed like a breed apart. One of my goals is to "pass" in these peoples' company & to be taken for one of them. Maybe now I can.

JayEll 10-04-2010 11:03 AM

Saef--I am totally envious of your trip to Glacier! Hope it's not too cold yet for you. Gosh, have a great time and stay safe/saef! Have you been out there before?

Jay

silverbirch 10-04-2010 11:14 AM

Me too. Wish I could be there.

Week 5 out of the planned 6. TM warm up OK. Incline chest press with 'baby' 3kg weights, focussing on form, not stressing the rotator cuff (we hope), triceps pulldown, yoga and stretching.

Meg 10-04-2010 11:22 AM

Have fun, Saef!

Silver, how is your rotator cuff these days? Mine is about 90% better and I'm finally back to regular upper body workouts. I discovered an arm bike in the corner of the gym and have been doing 20 minutes a day: 10 minutes before lifting and 10 after. It seems to really help with strengthening, blood flow to the injury, and flexibility.

Today:

Cardio: 20 min elliptical, 20 min arm bike, 15 min recumbent bike

Back: FreeMotion row, reverse grip lat pulldowns, bent over BB rows, DB pullovers, back extensions, one arm DB rows

paperclippy 10-04-2010 01:12 PM

Saef, have fun in Glacier!!

Oct 1: walked 1.5 miles
Oct 2: none
Oct 3:
- swam 1 mile! 36 laps split up as follows:
- 2 laps swim
- 2 laps kick
- 2 laps arms
- 27 swim
- 1 lap kick
- 1 lap arms
- 1 lap swim
- ran 2 miles
- walked 2 miles

Oct 4:
- ran with dog this morning, still need to map it out for distance. 20 min.

Cardio day. 20 mins on TM (longer than usual as my neighbour had firsthand info of use to my latest project). 20 mins X-trainer intervals. 20 mins yoga & stretching.

Rotator cuff nonsense. Thank you for asking, Meg. Things were going well (that is, not even a murmur) until yesterday. I did the low-key incline chest press (2 x 10 x 3kg) and all felt fine. I then decided to show off whilst balancing on one leg in the flying angel position, whirling my L arm about pretending to lose balance and fall over. Ccccrrrr! Ack! Normally, I am the most sober & sensible of people. Yesterday I forgot that. Today there is slight complaint. So I'm obviously not quite right! Very glad to hear, though, that you're OK enough to get back into it. Be careful as you lug the DGD about though - they can do serious damage, however cuddly they are!

paperclippy 10-06-2010 10:30 AM

Oct 5: Modified weights routine.
- 5 min warmup on climber thing
- 1x10 squats w/20# bar
- 3x8 leg press, I forgot what weight I set it to.
- 3x10 calf press, varying weights
- 3x10 leg curl each leg
- 1x10 hip adduction each leg
- 1x10 hip abduction each leg
- 3x10 back extension
- 1x10 roll ups
- 1x10 roll overs
- 1x6 oblique roll overs
- 5 min stretching

Oct 6:
- 1.55 mile interval run with dog, 18:30, plus 5 min warmup 5 min cooldown 5 min stretching

thesame7lbs 10-06-2010 10:31 AM

Saef, I am so jealous of your trip to Glacier! I was there ohhhh... 22 years ago. Wow. So it's been a while. Hope it was a wonderful trip!

Silver, sorry to hear about your shoulder injury lingering. I have been dealing with tendonitis in my hip for about 14 months. Sometimes it's almost gone, and then I go and do a new move in kickboxing, or try to do sprints, or something of that order, and I feel that old familiar twinge. Argh.

Oct 4: Rest day

Oct 5: Get-over-going-out-the-night-before-day

It's cold out there this morning!

- 3x10 split squats w/20# bar
- 1x10 rear delt @10#
- 1x10 fly @10#
- 3x10 romanian chair leg lifts alternating with
- 3x10 back extension
- arm circles, snow angels, other shoulder/back stuff without weights
- 5 min stretching

thesame7lbs 10-07-2010 01:01 PM

Jessica, how long have you been doing NRLW? I just got the book and am trying to determine my exercise priorities -- running, lifting, yoga -- and how to fit them all in. How do you like it?

Oct 7:
60 mins stairmaster, sort of

Sort of, because I was called to child care to change DS's diaper partway through, but had dropped the clean diaper on my way in to the gym, so had to go on a hunt for it, then change him, then head back to the stairmaster. So it was 60 mins from when I started to when I finished, but it included a diapering break. I did jog to the parking lot and take the stairs two at a time in an attempt to keep my heart rate up. :)

silverbirch 10-07-2010 02:44 PM

Amy - you could call it interval training perhaps?

10 mins TM warm-up
20 mins cardio intervals on rower
15 mins cardio intervals on X-trainer
20 mins yoga and stretching.

Nine hours later, I can feel it in my legs. Should I do legs, as scheduled, tomorrow? Decisions, decisions.

paperclippy 10-07-2010 04:51 PM

Amy, I did the whole NRLW program last winter and just started it again a couple months ago for this winter. I may need to modify, adjust, or give it up this year though since the repetitive stress injury in my wrists is acting up, and heavy lifting exacerbates it.

In any case though, I love the program. I skipped straight to the exercises and ignored the rest of the book though. I already know how to count calories and eat healthy, and I can't handle a high protein diet like they recommend so I just ignored it. I got great results from it and I actually have some muscle definition in my legs now (and if I flex, you can kind of see a bicep in there somewhere  ).

I do the routines two days a week. Last year I did NRLW Tuesdays and Thursdays, tried to run MWF, and swam on Sundays. I say "tried to" because sometimes my legs were way too sore from NRLW for a Wed or Fri run. For one month in there I did a bootcamp class MW instead of running. Probably what I actually managed was more like this:
Monday - run
Tuesday - NRLW workout A
Wednesday - rest
Thursday - NRLW workout B
Friday - rest
Saturday - run
Sunday - swim

The book recommends doing their workouts 3x/week but that's too much for me. I saw a lot of progress just doing it two days a week. To be honest, even with the variety of exercises, and even though I love being strong, weight lifting bores me to tears. Also, it will make you extremely sore.

Jessica,
I will check out those workouts. I have had the book for over a year and have barely cracked it:o
I did an amazing spin class on Monday - LOVED it.
Thought that was going to start the week off in the right direction...but my hormones got the best of me.
Tired, cranky and now cramps.
Going to the class again tomorrow night - hopefully I will feel better by then.

Oct 8:
1.6 mile interval run with the dog
(5 min warmup, used c25k w1 podcast to time 60:90 intervals for 18:30, cooldown walk)

silverbirch 10-08-2010 05:08 PM

8 October: rest day with chiro visit. Gymn three times this week (5/6 on my plan). Don't want to push my luck, given my recent history.

Jessica - have been meaning to say what a nuisance the re-occurence of your RSI is.

Not a great run. Too many late nights this week and a bit of a cold waiting in the wings. :(

Got off my butt yesterday and did a spin class

I am in LOVE with those classes!!:carrot:

May do a little run in the rain today.

9 October

Building a wood shelter for kindling. It is based on an old wardrobe I bought for £10 (5 US$?) In a charity shop. It didn't have a back so I've added slats for ventilation. Now painting it and hoping to finish it tomorrow. And fill with all that kindling I produced in the last week or so! I call that moving and I'm so pleased and excited. I want to be ready for this winter.

Michele - your schedule is punishing sometimes. All the time? Hope you're OK.

My schedule is crazy most of the time. I like to be busy but sometimes it is too much-- like now! I will be finished (hopefully) with my masters in December and that will be a big time sucker gone. My dh is also traveling a great deal now which makes it difficult with driving my dd places, myself with my commitments, etc. :?::dizzy:

I think I've just returned from heaven.

Glacier National Park is simply astonishing.

Those mountains ... there are no words ... they look like something out of dreams, like 19th century landscape paintings, like painted theatrical backdrops. They have such a presence, like someone always standing behind you looking over your shoulder.

I spent the whole time feeling I'd accidentally wound up in a nature documentary running on "Animal Planet." I saw a grizzly bear & cubs eating berries. I saw bighorn sheep knocking their horns together. I saw mountain goats picking their way along impossible trails covered with loose rocks. I saw a pair of golden eagles flying around each other in courtship rituals. I saw an elk trotting with her calf. I walked within maybe 80 feet of an enormous bull moose. (And backed away slowly & quite respectfully down the path again.) I saw bison wrenching up mouthfuls of grass, looking like heavily upholstered cows. And pronghorn antelope that I nearly missed, except they were just beyond the bison & made a movement that I caught through my binoculars. Oh, and a herd of mule deer. A spruce grouse that I maybe could have picked up & tucked under my arm. And some corvids & jays that I'd never see out east: A gray jay that flew down on top of the picnic table & eyed the chicken atop my salad. Clarks nutcrackers yelling from the tops of pines & landing at a puddle. Ravens, making their eerie calls. Even the chickadees up at Logan's Pass were another species.

Oh, and the poverty just outside the park. And the physical remoteness of some peoples' lives, which is so much the opposite of New York living.

And this whole trip was an NSV. Without losing weight & maintaining the level of fitness that I've been working at for a few years now, I could never have hiked up the sides of mountains -- and even worse, back down the sides of mountains. On Wednesday, I rode a stationary bike for an hour early in the morning, at the gym at the resort where I stayed, doing just about 15.5 miles, then in the afternoon, hiked three miles, and then rode a horse for an hour. In 2007, any one part of that itinerary, let alone the whole thing, would have defeated me & left me on the sidelines, probably eating something to console myself.

I think when I weigh in tomorrow, I'm going to be okay with whatever number I see. I went on this vacation without any "vacation mentality" regarding food or feeling any need to "treat" myself. Not with all the cr&p I saw in the gift shops like really lurid fudge flavors & etc. I did have some grass-fed beef (what was called a "rancher steak") and two elk burgers and some local salmon. I'm considering that all vacation food.

Anyway, as for exercise:

Tues. Oct 5: 60 minutes elliptical, resistance at 8, 45 minutes weights, hiked for 90 minutes on Trail of the Cedars & to Avalanche Lake

Weds. Oct 6: 60 minutes stationary bike, resistance at 8, 45 minutes Pilates routine, hiked around Two Medicine Lake (hike cut short by moose encounter), 60 minutes riding

Thurs. Oct 7: 60 minutes hiking Logan Pass, in the rain, partly along a cliff

Fri. Oct 8: More of a walk than a hike, as bears were out at Many Glaciers, so we were in the car pretty much, and in the evening, 60 minutes elliptical, resistance 8, 45 minutes weights

Sat. Oct 9: 60 minutes stationary bike, 45 minutes Pilates, mostly sitting in car in National Bison Range Wildlife Refuge

Sun, Oct 10: Up at 4 AM, flew all day, nothing. A rest day, I guess.

Must. Go. West. Again. SOON!

thesame7lbs 10-10-2010 09:53 PM

Saef, sounds like an AMAZING trip! I can't believe how much wildlife you saw! And how good you were about working out. That's discipline.

October 10:
4 mile run with stroller
~43 minutes

traveling michele 10-10-2010 09:57 PM

Saef-- what an amazing trip you described!
I am completely ignorant about geography-- where is this park?

When we lived in S. Africa, our most favorite thing to do in the world was go on safari. I could do it everyday. It is just amazing to see all of the animals, the surroundings, and experience it.
