Oct. 20: 41 minutes running Totals: 14 days 651 minutes I'm leaving tonight to visit dd at her college. I'm not sure what, if any, exercise I'll get in but I'm bringing my workout clothes and shoes. The hotel says it has a fitness center but it is a very small hotel so I'm guessing that may be a machine or two. |

Oct. 22: 39 minutes running in hotel on treadmill (little over 4 miles). Fitness center was what I expected but it works-- 2 treadmills, a bike and an elliptical. I'm worried about my eating but I'll tackle any damage when I get back! Totals: 15 days 690 minutes |
23 October: woodwork outside; running in and out between showers.

October 22:
4.5 mile run untimed October 23: 6.3 mile run ~60 minutes Lovely run through my hometown in New Jersey. I ran by the house where I grew up, from the day I came home from the hospital to the day I left for college. Down the street where I had my paper route in 6th grade. Past my high school and the house where everyone used to go sledding before liability lawsuits were all the rage. All the way across town and up some steep hills to where the big houses are. ;) Nice view of NYC, but it still looks wrong without the towers. |
25 October: lovely active day. About 6C (in the 40s), still and gloriously sunny. Woodwork, painting the shed and gardening. My kind of day.

yesterday 5 mile run
today nyc commuter walking (read: fast) to and from various offices and transit methods |
Just back from three days of looking at leaves, antiquing & a little outlet shopping in Connecticut. Also some unwilling time at the Mohegan Sun casino, one of my mother's favorite places. That means I missed my weekend exercise classes, and had to make do with whatever creaky equipment the motels had. These were budget motels, so I was lucky they had any fitness facilities at all. (My mother spends unwillingly on accommodations & made the choices; she hasn't been spoiled by expensed business travel, as I have been.)
Saturday, Oct. 23: 60 minutes elliptical, resistance at 8, half backward, at my own gym, at 7 AM before we departed for our trip Sunday, Oct. 24: 60 minutes stepper, resistance at 8, a beat-up old Stairmaster brand, about 30 minutes of Pilates afterward, with every damn person in the motel staring in at me, as the glass door was opposite the elevator & they were all on their way to the breakfast buffet. One elderly man came into the gym, with his windbreaker zipped up tight. He came right up & peered at me. In a child's voice, with no "please" or "ma'm" or "miss," he said: "Set the treadmill on slow for me." I kept stepping but directed him through it. (I guess I looked like I worked there? It was a very strange moment in my gym life.) Monday, Oct. 25: 60 minutes stepper, resistance at 8, a Life Fitness machine, which was nice, but only went up to 30 minutes, so I had to set it twice. No dumbbells at either of these places. They have those machines that I don't know how to use with about three benches sticking off them & half the pulleys busted from stray teenage boys horsing around. The overhead lat pull always has a ton of weight piled on it, I suspect for the same reason, as none of these motels seemed to have any guests who looked as if they were doing serious lifting regularly. We'll see what damage was done. Compounded by my getting my period again on Saturday morning. Now it arrives about every 21 days. Too damn often. And now I regret not getting a particular black ruffled v-neck cardigan that I tried on at the J. Crew outlet store. |

45 minutes weights, with trainer giving me a tip on skullcrushers that was extremely helpful. 45 minute spin class tonight, walking home in weirdly warm weather for the end of October, with a light pattering rain & the smell of wet autumn leaves & wet pine needles. A wonderful smell that makes me swoon a little. |
saef, what are skullcrushers?

Isn't that a great name, Jay? They are, I hope, going to be the salvation of my triceps. Or at least, they're one part of my plan to salvage my triceps from underneath the remaining bat wings.
Here's a video showing a guy with rather nice arms doing them. http://www.bodybuilding.com/exercise...-triceps-press How they get their name: Imagine if he let go at a crucial moment. I use a 12-pound weighted bar. |
Oh yeah, that. I just didn't know that name. Thanks!

Wednesday, Oct. 27:
45 minute spin class 35 minute Pilates routine I sweat so hard during spin class that my glasses were covered with water droplets by the end. I wish I had little windshield wipers on them. We're having weirdly warm & humid weather, as though we've traveled back in time to mid-September. Except the maple trees are all aflame or losing their leaves & the air has that late fall smell. |

Jessica, would you still be super-impressed with my squats if you knew I was still in ridiculous pain three days later? I had no idea I was overdoing it so badly. The first three sets weren't that hard!
October 28 3 mile run with stroller 34 minutes October 29 Still haven't decided whether or not to run. I have to manage a first-grade Halloween party this afternoon, and don't know which I need more -- energy or stress relief! ETA: Opted for stress relief and the optimistic hope that a slow 3-mile run might boost my energy. :D |
Fri, Oct. 29:

The heaviest thing that I've picked up in the gym is a 40-lb. barbell. Though today the weights were out of order on the rack & I tried to move them around. I was able to pick the 90-lb barbell. But I just couldn't budge the 110-lb barbell. At all. Like, it didn't even rock back & forth a bit. |
Amy, I thought NRLW S1W1A had you doing 3 sets of 15...?

Actually, the book has you doing two sets of squats. But I went online and printed out the training log, which has space for four sets. After I finished doing the second set, I went to write it in the log and noticed there was space for four sets. I actually thought to myself, "Huh, I thought I was only supposed to do two." And now, looking in the book, everything is 2 and 3 sets -- and I did 4 of everything. I guess I'm lucky I'm only a little sore. :o ~sigh~ You know, whenever I've been in the job market, I've never applied for jobs that list "attention to detail" as a requirement. It just isn't my thing. |
Beautiful Fall morning here in suburban Maryland. Perfect day for a run.

Beautiful but windy in NY.
Barricades up on Sixth Ave. already for the Halloween Parade tomorrow night. And some people already walking around in costume. (I sat opposite a very convincing Tina Turner on the uptown 4. It was a woman, too, not a man.) Union Square was full of people with enormous DSW shopping bags with big boxes in them. They are all buying boots for the fall & winter, to tuck their skinny jeans into. (Not a boot-cut in sight today, but that's because I was surrounded by NYU students & shopping teens seemingly untouched by the Great Recession.) Saturday, October 30: 45 minute spin class 60 minutes Pilates Incidental: Couple hours walking around downtown, rushing from IFC to Union Square Regal Cinema to catch two consecutive movies. |
