Amy, have you started NRLW yet? Anything with "Bulgarian" or "Romanian" in the name is guaranteed to be a tough (and effective) exercise!
Oct 19: strength stuff as follows: - jump rope warmup, 1-2 mins (60 jumps) - about 8 min yoga - 3x10 bulgarian split squats, no weight - 3x10 romanian single-leg deadlifts, 2x5# dumbbells - using 5# dumbbells, 10 each of: bicep curl, front arm raise, tricep kickback, bench press, pec fly, bent over row, back fly (is that what it's called? like a pec fly, but for your back), overhead raise while lying down, lateral raise - inner and outer hip/thigh leg lifts - 5 min stretching Oct 20: - ran 1.8 miles, 24:00 (slow! because my legs are sore) |
Thursday, Oct. 21: 60 minutes arc trainer, hill intervals, resistance at 8, for 3.35* miles (which seems paltry but not at that resistance level)
ETA: One hour Pilates class. We put our backs against the mirror & slid down till we were sitting & held it. And held it. Then we pulsed up & down. Then we held it. I whimpered. My leg muscles shook. *Edited after I checked note book & found it was 3.35 miles, not 2.35 miles. I get just over 3 miles on the arc trainer doing intervals, but twice as many miles on the elliptical |
Jessica, I haven't started yet. I keep saying, "I'll start this week, I'll start this week," but never seem to get to it. I have high hopes for next week. :D I printed out a training log and it's sitting next to my computer at this very moment. Now I need to crack open the book and fill in the blanks! Any day now...
October 21; 6.3 mile run untimed First 3 miles ran with DH and pushed DS in the stroller. Then DH took DS home and I ran ~3 more! Great, crisp fall morning, perfect for running! Oh happy day. |

The hotel says it has a fitness center but it is a very small hotel so I'm guessing that may be a machine or two. |

October 22:
4.5 mile run untimed October 23: 6.3 mile run ~60 minutes Lovely run through my hometown in New Jersey. I ran by the house where I grew up, from the day I came home from the hospital to the day I left for college. Down the street where I had my paper route in 6th grade. Past my high school and the house where everyone used to go sledding before liability lawsuits were all the rage. All the way across town and up some steep hills to where the big houses are. ;) Nice view of NYC, but it still looks wrong without the towers. |
25 October: lovely active day. About 6C (in the 40s), still and gloriously sunny. Woodwork, painting the shed and gardening. My kind of day.

yesterday 5 mile run
today nyc commuter walking (read: fast) to and from various offices and transit methods |
Just back from three days of looking at leaves, antiquing & a little outlet shopping in Connecticut. Also some unwilling time at the Mohegan Sun casino, one of my mother's favorite places. That means I missed my weekend exercise classes, and had to make do with whatever creaky equipment the motels had. These were budget motels, so I was lucky they had any fitness facilities at all. (My mother spends unwillingly on accommodations & made the choices; she hasn't been spoiled by expensed business travel, as I have been.)
Saturday, Oct. 23: 60 minutes elliptical, resistance at 8, half backward, at my own gym, at 7 AM before we departed for our trip Sunday, Oct. 24: 60 minutes stepper, resistance at 8, a beat-up old Stairmaster brand, about 30 minutes of Pilates afterward, with every damn person in the motel staring in at me, as the glass door was opposite the elevator & they were all on their way to the breakfast buffet. One elderly man came into the gym, with his windbreaker zipped up tight. He came right up & peered at me. In a child's voice, with no "please" or "ma'm" or "miss," he said: "Set the treadmill on slow for me." I kept stepping but directed him through it. (I guess I looked like I worked there? It was a very strange moment in my gym life.) Monday, Oct. 25: 60 minutes stepper, resistance at 8, a Life Fitness machine, which was nice, but only went up to 30 minutes, so I had to set it twice. No dumbbells at either of these places. They have those machines that I don't know how to use with about three benches sticking off them & half the pulleys busted from stray teenage boys horsing around. The overhead lat pull always has a ton of weight piled on it, I suspect for the same reason, as none of these motels seemed to have any guests who looked as if they were doing serious lifting regularly. We'll see what damage was done. Compounded by my getting my period again on Saturday morning. Now it arrives about every 21 days. Too damn often. And now I regret not getting a particular black ruffled v-neck cardigan that I tried on at the J. Crew outlet store. |
