That's a great point, Meg. It seems to me that there is something disordered about dieting and calorie counting and obsessing about food planning. But this kind of 'disorder' seems to me to be a necessary reaction to a toxic and insane food culture that encouraged all of us to become overweight and unhealthy. My hope is that thinking of food in terms of calories and macros and planning and all the rest is an intermediate period in the development of a healthy relationship with food. One day I would like to be able to eat intuitively, to not eat irrationally, to always choose the healthy food over the unhealthy food, to eat in moderation. But I'm not there yet and at the moment I need to be counting calories, planning my food in advance and restricting what I eat.
Also, Self magazine is total crap. That article was so poorly written and poorly thought through that it really doesn't deserve our responses to it.
