October 2010

Hey-I've never started a monthly (or weekly) thread here before!

Got my surgery date this morning-Jan 18th! I wish it could be sooner-but what are you gonna do? ;)

Happy Monday!

JLem311 10-04-2010 11:59 AM

hello all!

that's good news, JM! Keep your focus until then!

not much going on with me..same, same, same.

Kimphin 10-04-2010 12:26 PM

Congrats on the date, JM. Keep up the good work with what your are doing and the surgery recovery will be that much better! A friend of ours had gastric b-p in May and we saw her for the 1st time on Friday and she is down 105#, looks great. She had been walking with 2 canes pre-surgery, and now she is cane-less (she's only 47 yrs old). I had a slight pang of jealousy (can only admit that here :) ) but she really needed fast intervention - and she was having no luck on her own.

I had a slower than prior loss last week, but I am still thrilled. Plus, I neglected to obsess on the sclae this weekend, but I think I am down again. I'll see in the AM (but I only post weekly :) ) It is nice to see the numbers head downward, even if by fractions of lbs!

BarbaraB 10-04-2010 01:28 PM

JM, Even though you have to go through the limbo of waiting for months, it is kind of good that they aren't doing it right before the holidays. I'm sure you'd rather have it over with now that you've decided, but at least you have some time to lose the weight that they want you to lose. I started my vitamen D prescription. Not so bad, it is just one pill a week. I read one thing that theorized that those studies where people who drank more milk lost weight faster had to do with the Vitamen D enrichment of milk products. Interesting thought at least.

Angie 10-04-2010 11:12 PM

Hi Jillian, Kim & Barbara :)

JM -- Hurray for having your date!

JLem311 10-05-2010 09:59 AM

morning all.

angie--your trampoline jumpers gave me a smile this morning! they're cute!

Kimphin 10-05-2010 10:55 AM

They caught my eye too!

Jillian - your hair is growing at an alarming rate! It looks terrific - you look like Julia Roberts in "Hook" (You were probably 3 years old when that movie came out... sigh...)

Edit:
OK, I just googled it, and she looked much shaggier than you in Hook - you look better. And, you weren't 3, you were probably like 10. Whew!

http://www.goodbaduglyfilms.com/wp-c...Tinkerbell.jpg

JLem311 10-05-2010 11:47 AM

ha! kim..that's funny! yeah, hers looks to be styled to look shaggy and it looks a bit longer. and yes you were close..i was almost 10yrs old when that movie came out!

where in the FRICK is everyone else? hiding behind a naughty latte? being a lazy lurker? "come out come out wherever you are!!" :)

Angie 10-05-2010 01:18 PM

I'm up 2 pounds today, which is really ticking me off. I ate some food I wouldn't normally, but I was still around 1300-1400 calories, which should be absolutely fine. I'll hope that it's water and will whoosh away again quickly. I was kind of counting on a gain this weekend, with Thanksgiving and my birthday and TOM all due in about 4-5 days but this is too early!

I better hit the treadmill hard tonight to get prepared!

I'm glad you guys like my little jumpers!

Hoochie 10-05-2010 03:53 PM

Sorry I havent popped by..I was probably hiding behind my latte! I actually have had so much crap going on around me lately that I havent watched my weight at all the past week. I feel disappointed in myself because I really wanted to lose some pounds before my anniversary in a few weeks.

My niece has been acting severely depressed and I am feeling like I am at a loss. She wont even leave the house anymore. She stays in bed all day. This is a 20 year old!!! Its scary
Then I have been swamped at work with firing a staff for stealing. Now I have hired but its training time now!!!

Anyways, no excuses!!! I know!!! I need to get my butt in gear. Tonight I am going to boot camp so that should release some frustrations....

Talk to you all later,

Joan

aguerin 10-06-2010 08:31 AM

Hello All! Its been a LOOOONNNNNNNGGGGG time since I have been in here and posted. Its great to see all the usuals. Congrats on sticking with LAWL. I have often thought about trying something else, but always think you have a plan that works if you will use it.

Hows the baby Jillian?

Its great to see everyones faces again. Keep up the good work.

Kimphin 10-06-2010 09:12 AM

AMY! Good to hear from you! Funny thing - some of us are still following the LAWL concept, but others have moved on to something else. I just love the friendships and support from my cyberchicks here, so I keep coming back for more!

Are you following any plan? or planning to follow a plan?

JLem311 10-06-2010 09:35 AM

wow! good to see you amy! the baby isn't such a baby anymore! X is now almost 1 1/2yrs old. :) she's doing well! we've been solo since may when my DH deployed. but we're doing amazingly well.
keep posting! it's nice to see "oldbies!" pop up!

aguerin 10-07-2010 09:56 AM

Ladies I have returned to the LAWL basics of course because I was moving up the scale again. Not really trying to lose anything now, but tyring to feel better and not over do it.

I'm glad everyone is doing well. Sorry to hear about your DH Jillian.

What is everyone doing for Exercise? Me - Walking very little a few days a week. I just can't do the DVDs. I lose interest in about 5 minutes cause I don't look like they do. LOL

Has anyone seen a post from Nichole lately?

Kimphin 10-07-2010 10:32 AM

No NICOLE has been conspicuously ABSENT lately....{{ahem..}}

Actually, I believe that she has been very busy since her middle DD just competed in her first pageant, and took home a few titles!

This week has been crazy, and I've ended up out of the house for dinner on more than one occasion - which is do-able on this plan, but harder than normal. The sclae appears to be showing it, too - but still hoping for the best tomorrow. Either way, I'm still thrilled to have lost 14 lbs in one month.

I've been meaning to post this for a while, but I found a new favorite in the grocery store - MetroMint water. There is a few flavors (0cal, 0 everything) like orangemint, chocolatemint, peppermint, lemonmint... OMG I love it! The problem is that it was fairly expensive ($1.75 for a 1.16 liter) and I was going through it fast - so, I bought some spearmint extract, and I put a teeny drop into my water (seriously - a little goes a long way) and... tada! Cheap minty water. I need to find some sort of chocolate extract though, because that is a really yummy one. I need to watch how much of the extracts I use, since there is alcohol in them, and that messes with ketosis.

Anyway - off to drink more yummy mint water.

Hoochie 10-07-2010 12:50 PM

Way to go Kim on losing 14 pounds, thats aweome!!!!!

I am going home this weekend for Canadian Thanksgiving.....not really sure I want to go home tomorrow but oh well!

Feeling blah today, I need to snap out of it.

Joan

Kimphin 10-07-2010 02:58 PM

Oh, that's right - Happy Thanksgiving to all of my Canadian friends!

Mama Nicole 10-07-2010 06:05 PM

No time, no time, no time....and this, my friends, is why.... :)

http://i943.photobucket.com/albums/a.../DSC_01032.jpg

i will be back soon :)
miss you all.
xoxo

BarbaraB 10-07-2010 06:35 PM

Nicole, She is a beauty, just like her mom. Oh my I just looked at your ticker! Did I miss your re-entry into the onderland? congrats. You are doing great.

Kim, the minty water sounds pretty tasty. I will have to try that.

Welcome back Amy! I've done the admittadly silly Richard Simmons DVD's before. He is a little crazy, but if you like to dance it can at least get you off the sofa, and if that 500 pound woman can do, by gosh so can I. I've been doing WW lately, but still post here.

I got on the scale this morning, and for once surprising good news! I was down around 6 pounds from last time! After not seeing the scale move for a few weeks, and trying to not get frustrated, I decided to just give it some time, and time and continued effort works. Of course then I went and put the lower weight into the WW tracker and it reduced my points.. not just for today but for the whole week, so I had already eaten more of my bonus points than I thought I had. I was prepared for lower points going forward. OH well.. they cut you back about 50 calories a day for every 10 pounds you lose.

Angie 10-07-2010 09:06 PM

Hey everyone! My 2 lbs fell off again today and I'm feeling much better.

Kim -- Thanks for the thanksgiving wishes. I'm about to face a whole weekend of mashed potatoes, stuffing and soft white bread...and I WILL PREVAIL! lol -- my accomodation to myself is that I'm making the potatoes with 1/3 potato, 1/3 celery root and 1/3 cauliflower...it's really delicious and I won't feel guilty about eating a teensy bit. I don't like to mess with ketosis either, it works so well!

Joan -- That Richard Simmons is a crazy loon, but lots of energy!

Amy -- I am not big on videos either, but I'm going to try to get back into doing my yoga/pilates ones at home since i don't want to pay for classes

Barbara -- Congrats on your weight loss, 6 pounds must have been a nice surprise, and its' all thanks to your perseverance!

Nicole -- Congratulations to Bethy! How exciting for you guys, I can't wait to hear all about it!

JM -- How's your keto-sing going?

JLem311 10-08-2010 09:54 AM

hello all. just wanted to pop in and say hi. good to see everyone doing well! i'm keeping quite busy and it seems everyone else is too!

happy thanksgiving to the Canadian peeps! :)

mj2007 10-08-2010 10:17 AM

Hey all,

I have been absent ( may be lurking once a day) because I was drowning under all the stuff that needed to be unpacked and organized. One week after the moving...and finally I am where I wanted to be. Just the storage needs some sorting.

It is Canadian thanksgiving weekend... my favorite time of the year. Thanks to all my friends on 3FC for the good wishes and happy Thanksgiving to Joan, Angie and all Canadian friends who might be lurking :P

I haven't decided on the menu besides turkey with gravy and cranberry sauce. I am looking for a good stuffing recipe. I might try green beans casserole this year along with some roasted root veggies. Last year...I just started the LAWL program and didn't have much options. My husband wants a pot roast for Thanksgiving...his inner meat-and-potato guy comes out whenever he hears "mashed potato". Which reminds me...I liked the "sweet-potato mash with honey and lemon " from Rachel Ray's show and I might try that. Oh....and of course...pumpkin pie from the LAWL cook-book. But I am also looking forward to the left over...I love turkey pies :)

I love Fall and the bounty it offers. And I love thanksgiving because it gives me a chance to sit back and reflect. How wonderful my life is...and think of all the things I can be grateful about.
Most of all I am grateful that i have the most amazing people in my life who hold my hand no matter what...

have a great weekend all!

Kimphin 10-08-2010 10:36 AM

Barbara - WTG on the -6#!!!! It's a lovely thing, huh?

Nicole - I knew you would come out of hiding to be a proud mama! She's a beauty, and I'm sure her personality is too.

Angie - Have a great holiday - sounds like you have a good plan. I saw a recipe for mashed cauliflower somewhere on someone's blog here (lotta good it's gonna do me if I can't remember where...D'oh!) and it looked yummy. Apparently you can mix in some mashed turnips or rutabaga to get better texture. I'm going to try it sometime.

Well, I took a fantastic swan dive off of the wagon last night - not going into detail, but suffice it to say, I am not in Ketosis anymore.... and have the headache to prove it... Buckling down for WI tomorrow.

Angie 10-08-2010 02:50 PM

I had a session with the trainers today...O. M. G. they nearly killed me. First one of them worked with me and another lady and then handed us off to another MEANER :club: trainer who worked us both all over again, we did a double work out and skipped the cardio. :whoo: Must be some sort of Thanksgiving pre-turkey tactic they've developed. I thought it was just plain evil while it was happening -- I was flashing back to my horrible Grade 9 gym classes and just about felt like throwing up at one point. I won't feel bad at all if I have a piece of bread at the restaurant tonight!

We are going to a Brazilian rodizzio (sp?) style restaurant, which is great for my diet (no sarcasm). They have a huge salad/starter bar and then the servers bring around about 15 kinds of meat that is all slow roasted on spits, and cut off pieces for you to try.

I am making the stuffing for the big family dinner on Sunday and I'm thinking of sneaking these little high fiber bran crumbs in there along with the bread. I'm sure people would thank me later when the stuffing and butter whooshed out instead of sticking to their butts and thighs. Who couldn't use a little more fiber? I was also going to make some punch out of Crystal Lite, but a couple of my younger (fitter) cousins are onto me and my attempts to 'lighten things up' -- I have to make 2 sets of potatoes now...my recipe I mentioned earlier, and REAL ones for the skinny folks :p

BarbaraB 10-11-2010 12:54 PM

Angie, That sounds like a killer workout. How was your thanksgiving?

Kim, I hope you are firmly back on the wagon. It seems like life is full of opportunities to eat badly. I was thinking the other day how people 500 years ago would consider our problems of not being able to lose weight a really good problem to have compared to constantly starving from lack of food.

MJ, I hope you are settling in and starting to enjoy your new city. Moving is never fun, but often when you first move to a new city you can have a lot of fun exploring it and finding new favorite places and seeing all the sites that the tourists visit when they come there.

Joan, Where is the home where you went to have Thanksgiving? I hope it went well and snapped you out of whatever mood you were in.

A quiet weekend at home for me. Did spin class both Saturday and Sunday. My clothes are starting to feel a little loose, so that is encouraging too.

aguerin 10-11-2010 01:34 PM

Hello Ladies.

Nice to see you again Nichole. Sorry but I couldn't see the pic of your lovely daughter. I will try to look when I get home on my non-locked down machine. Work is killin me. LOL

Congrats on the losses ladies. I wish I could report one, but I can report NO Gain. Still sticking close to the basics on the LAWL though so that is good.

Still just walking now and then. No major commitment on anything. We have some weather changing going on here. This week is high 80's. Last week Low 70s. I need some stability. I have been eyeing that Zumba video, but can't commit right now. I know it won't work for me with me sitting on the couch.

My oldest son proposed to his live in girlfriend on Friday. He is 19 to be 20 in January and she will be 20 on the 24th of this month. They just look like kids and have no idea what they are getting themselves into. Both are in college full time.

Kimphin 10-12-2010 10:16 AM

Wow Amy - engaged at 19! Are they thinking of waiting a while before the wedding? I'm sure it is hard to think of your little boy being all grown up and engaged, but I remember thinking that I had it all figured out at that age. (I was totally wrong, but it all worked out in the end!) Good luck to them both!

Recovered from the cliff diving leap off protocol last week, and am down another 2lbs. Whew! Friends invited us over Saturday and she left a message that said she was making chicken/broccoli/pasta! Ugh! I haven't really told anyone what I am doing, but I had to tell her - no way I could maneuver around that. So, I told her I broke up with carbs, and could she not mix the pasta in with everything. She understood, and all was well.

JLem311 10-12-2010 10:23 AM

good morning all. just wanted to stop by and say hi and report that i'm down on the scale again! FINALLY.

BarbaraB 10-12-2010 12:11 PM

Jillian, It has been awhile that you were at that same weight, perhaps you are in for another series of seeing losses on the scale. Isn't it weird how it comes in spurts and is not a linear thing?

Kim another 2 pounds is great! 16 pounds in 4 weeks is wonderful. I found that when you talk about weight loss to other women, most of them are trying to lose weight or working hard to maintain their weight.

Amy, Engaged at 19. Sometimes it works out OK, even if I wouldn't give it high odds. I know people who got together in 6th grade and are still together 40 years later. I guess it all depends on whether the girl in question is a good match for your son, since it is random luck at 19 whether you've picked a gem or a jerk.

juliemarie 10-12-2010 02:06 PM

Good morning everyone-looks like there's a great WL trend going on in here!

I've struggled a bit with the very low carb thing . . .last week I thought I'd hurl at the thought of another egg for breakfast and spent the week having cereal or a bagel for breakfast-which doesn't set up the day well for low-carbing the rest of the meals. So I guess I took a little break! Didn't eat badly-just not low carb. Back on it yesterday after a traveling weekend which always seems to end up with a couple of car fast food meals. Argh!

So-I've decided to have a protein shake in the mornings when I can't stomach another egg-I doubt it will be a problem. Better than succumbing to a bagel and cream cheese, right?

And last night I made another casserole dish of eggplant and beef lasagna. Sooo good! Certainly doesn't taste like a "diet" meal!

Kimphin 10-12-2010 02:21 PM

JM - I've been just the opposite - I usually have a protein shake for b-fast (use part of it as coffee creamer) and sometimes I get the urge to CHEW something! LOL - DH even notices - "Oh, you're chewing this morning..."

I have found it quite interesting that I can be tired of something every day, but used to eat the same exact non-healthy stuff everyday and not get tired of it.... ah, the brain, can't live with it, can't live without it.

Barb - yup, I'll take the 16 in one month any day! It is a tiny bit discouraging to see the weeks decline from #1 and #2, but overall I am thrilled! Ready to start exercising regularly again, since I wasn't supposed to for the first few weeks.

CONGRATS!!!

I think it will be really cool when your current weight is less than your pounds lost! (I mean it's all really cool, but hey, I'm a numbers gal)

YES!! that would be really awesome! maybe that'll have to be a new goal for me soon! :)

mj2007 10-12-2010 06:00 PM

Hey all

Barbara-i am glad that you are feeling the difference!I read this book "French women never get fat" in which the author mentioned that often it is best to do a "zipper-measurement" i.e...trying on your clothes to see if they fit, than obsessing about the scale.
And yes...I have started exploring, and it feels wonderful to discover hidden-jewels and have those "yippee" moments ...I truly feel like a those explorers who discovered continents :)

Amy- I can imagine how you must be feeling.but you can't teach them life skills...they have to learn as they go.I have known people who married at 21 and got divorced soon after...and also people who married as teenagers and now celebrating their 50th anniversary...hard to assume anything!!

Jillian - Great job!!!!

JM- I get tired of eggs/egg whites too. Besides protein shake, low-fat ricotta is also a good source of veg protein (1/2 cup= 1P). You can also try soft tofu scrambled instead of eggs.

Angie & Joan how was your thanksgiving?

THANKSGIVING is OVER(thank you god!)...and I have tacked some of the left overs already. I used the turkey and leftover green bean casserole and gravy to make mini-pot pies.i made some turkey stock...I'll use that and the mash+ some left over veggies to make a turkey soup this evening.
lucky...i made a root veggie mash instead of potato mash so i don't have to worry about the carbs.
The mash actually came out wonderful...and i would like to share it with everyone. Use 1 potato+1 celery root+1 rutabaga+1 parsnip for the mash, add few cloves of roasted garlic...some butter/olive oil, buttermilk, black pepper and fresh chives...yum!

I have also got some corn-bread/turkey sausage stuffing left...any ideas?

aguerin 10-13-2010 01:09 PM

Hello all. For the most part things are going well here.

For some reason I seem to be binging. In the late evenings I can't get enough to eat. I think it has something to do with TOM. But I'm two weeks in / two weeks out. Is that normal to be hungary now? I'm starting to think something I am eating is "triggering" this as it only happens in the evening after I have eaten an apple or yogurt. So I may have to investigate that theory. Any ideas?

Congrats on the WLs to everyone. The good news is with the binging I haven't gained anything (yet).

Christina2629 10-13-2010 02:59 PM

Hello Ladies!

I am hoping I can join you in this thread. I have posted before but that was earlier this year but went off plan so I stopped posting. I did LAWL 5 years ago and lost 56lbs but have since gained it back plus an additional 20. Since July I have lost 18lbs and am now back on the LAWL plan. I decided to go back to LAWL becuase it was the only thing that worked for me. I think its great to have people who support you in your weight loss journey.

Christina

Joni135 10-13-2010 08:01 PM

My monthly check in!

Hi old friends! WOW - everyone is doing amazingly well! Kim, Mama Nicole, Jillian, etc........so proud of you guys. Kim - I know it's a no carb thing, but was is IP? I'm doing WW and averaging 1.5 lbs a week...slow slow slow! But that's okay. As long as it keeps going down or even stays the same once in a while, I'm okay with that! Life is just busy....I'm trying to make healthy choices every day and be good to my body..but I have my days..who doesn't. All the Canada Thanksgiving food talk has me hungry...think I'll go down a glass of water and curl up for a good night's sleep!

aguerin 10-14-2010 09:31 AM

Welcome Christina to the forum and good Luck on your journey.

Good To see you again Joni. I have only recently returned to the forum as well. It is good to see all the old friends in here isn't it?

Well My scale is moving down again and I don't understand why but I'm not going to argue it. I won't talk about the yogurt binge I had going again last night. I pledge to do better today. (Partly because I am out of yogurt).

I am also going to drop my ticker and see if that will motivate me to focus more. :D

Kimphin 10-14-2010 10:29 AM

Amy - Yes, I find that not having any food in the house stops the bingeing! LOL. This is the first time I've really looked at your ticker - you are doing great! At 5'7" - I bet you look pretty svelte!

JONI! Just when I thought you were among the missing. Good to hear from you - IP is Ideal Protein. I mentioned it a couple of months ago when I was researching it - it is based on Dr. Tran Tien's insulin resistance diet - but with food packets (You can follow his diet with real food too, but I needed simple and easy!) 3 or 4 packets a day (usually shakes for me, but they have other stuff), 4 cups of low GI veggies, unlimited lettuce, and 5-6 oz meat/chicken/fish per day. The idea is to give your pancreas a rest, and then re-awaken it after most of the weight you want to lose is gone. Restrictive? Yes, but it works for me. At some point I may do the whole food version, but not now.
http://www.trantiendiet.com/site/spip.php?article142 Dude's got great hair too. :)

Kimphin 10-14-2010 10:32 AM

Welcome Christina! And congratulations on getting back on the wagon.
