Anyone doing I Can Make You Thin?

I just came across I Can Make You Thin on TLC. Is anyone doing this? If so, how is it working for you. It seems to be a lot like Intuitive Eating with some strategies to make it work better and I'm thinking it would work well with Whole Foods healthy eating.

vixjean 03-29-2008 03:16 PM

A friend of mine at work has been doing this for about 2 weeks, her weight has not changed, although she is not working out at all. I think it is a bit misleading, the 'eat what you want' part, because what you want could be so calorie dense!

That's just my opinion, but if you leave sweets and candy and high calorie foods, etc.. out of the program, I believe it makes sense.

trooworld 03-29-2008 03:17 PM

It's funny you mention this, I read a post on some other board of someone that is following it (I think it was the 100 lb club) and she said it really helps. I don't know about the "eating what you want" part mentioned by vixjean, but I did check out his techniques for emotional eating and cravings. There are techniques that you can learn from the host's website, I checked them out...they sound a little nutty but I think they will probably work. I've heard of thought field therapy before for other things, I don't see why it wouldn't work for emotional eating. Go check out his website, I'm sorry I don't know the link.

Shay 03-29-2008 04:27 PM

Hi Pattygirl--I have been going back and forth whether I want to watch the show. The hypnotist part throws me off. But I will give it a try. It definitely sounds like IE which has helped me immensely with my binge eating. I am now starting to lose weight. Yeah! I don't obsess about food. I don't plan binges. I don't look foward to binges. I don't deal with my emotional issues with food. It has been amazing.

Vixjean--Hi to you too. I think we make the assumption that we will want calorie laden things when you can eat what you want. When it is no longer off limits it is less appealing. At least for me. I'm not sure if he will address exercise or not. This is about building a healthy relationship with food.

pattygirl63 03-29-2008 08:04 PM

Hi Shay,
I went to the Paul McKenna website and it is FREE so I joined. Got a lot info I downloaded to read. I did the technique on line for getting rid of cravings. I've never been much of a sweet eater but lately found it hard to keep my hands out of DH Heath bars which I don't even really like. Any way after doing his technique, I'm not sure I will be able to eat anything chocolate without feeling nauseous or sick. I don't think I'll have problems with the "eat what you want" because I already have a desire to eat healthy Whole Foods like fruit, veggies and grains. My sweetner is mostly Stevia. I just need to get to where I am eating more IE lifestyle... eat when hungry and no cravings. Here's the website if anyone wants to check it out
http://www.mckenna.com/ . It won't be for everybody, but some will. I expect it to help me with my already healthy way of eating. This plus IE and Whole Foods will be a great lifestyle for me.

purplepansy912 03-30-2008 12:09 PM

I've been watching it and did the first weeks plan
eat what you want, eat when you are hungry, eat consciously ( putting down your fork with each bite)
I have to say that part of it works, BUT, eating what I want doesn't work for me. I want bagels and cream cheese, pizza and ice cream. I think eating those foods aren't healthy and high in fat.
I think eating what is MOST healthy for your body as fuel could be a good tool, incorporating those foods once a week makes most sense to me using that method.

The tapping method did work for me once last week, when I passed a carvel ice cream store... my absolute fave!!! I really didn't want it...but other times it didn't.. but I think I was very hungry.

I thinking doing any method like his works if you want it to work.. I also think the beck weight loss method is good tooo...
again it comes down to less calories in and more expended to lose weight.. they all work as long as you work em!!

Lizabeth2 04-01-2008 11:48 AM

I Can Make You----

Hi Patty, and everyone! I am doing Paul McKenna's I can make you--. It is working for me. I am not eating everything that is not good and find myself doing it often (first week) but this is self hypnosis as I understand and we have to do it often until it gets ingrained. I am losing, do not get up at night to eat and have started exercisinf once more. I am going to weigh in the morning again and I will let you know. :carrot: Also, it isn't costing me a cent! :smug:

Lizabeth2 04-01-2008 11:52 AM

I Can Make You--

I forgot to say that I am a former weight watcher and I do know how to eat healthful but recently quit for lack of funds. I do the taps also. As needed!

Ruthxxx 04-01-2008 12:12 PM

OhCharlie 04-01-2008 08:55 PM

I've been following the basic 4 rules and I have to say...I remembered today that there were cookies in the pantry that have been in there over a week. If I'd been "on a diet" they would have been GONE..simply because I "couldn't" have them...I'm eating exactly what I want and the cookies and Easter candy AREN'T IT! Does that make sense? I'm also very cued in to the hunger and satiety feelings..and for once I really can distinguish when emotion leads me to eat. Seems that before that was always such a vague term..now I know! I like to call what I'm doing "I CAN MAKE ME THIN"

pattygirl63 04-01-2008 09:42 PM

I am experiencing some of the same things. In fact, I have a "new" problem/experience I haven't had in over 35 years... I'M NOT HUNGRY. I had 2 boiled eggs and 4 olives around 12:30 (got up late) and I wasn't hungry again until around 7 pm. I kept telling DH, I don't know what to do because I'm not hungry. I think I was, but it has been so long since I ate just when I was hungry that I didn't recognize it because by the time I felt hungry and made a salad to eat I had the shakes. I still haven't had the chocolate candy I craved. They are sitting on the table by where my DH sits not far from where I sit and I just don't want it. Isn't that neat? I haven't felt this way since I was 27 years old and I am 64 now. What a wonderful feeling... no hunger and no stuffed feelings. I feel great.

OhCharlie 04-02-2008 08:58 AM

Hey Pattygirl--I see you're in SC..I'm a Charlestonian myself! I just turned 50 and decided NO MORE DIETING EVER. EVER!. With the help of this type of mindset, I feel like I've been let out of prison...the only thing I ever truly wanted in my life was to feel "normal" around food... this is amazing. My clothes are looser and I just feel EMPOWERED...I exercise because I want to, not because I feel like it's a have-to. What a feeling!

aleka 04-02-2008 09:41 AM

Good morning,
I've been watching Paul McKenna these past few weeks and have started his program. May I join you? I started last week and was really surprised that I lost some weight. The hardest part for me is getting in the mind set of eating what I want. I still think of some foods as forbidden. But, I'm working on that.
I will be turning 60 this year and I just can't go on another diet. When I saw Paul McKenna's first show, everything just clicked.

Pattygirl, I too find that I'm not hungry between meals and sometimes don't eat until it's too late.

OhCharlie, I've been wanting to feel normal around food also and by eating this way I feel like a weight has been lifted off my shoulders.

OhCharlie 04-02-2008 12:15 PM

Aleka--Amen to the weight being lifted off your shoulders, girl!!!! It is so liberating, isn't it?? I have come to truly believe in this way of being..not thinking, "if this doesn't work in 2 weeks I'll go on a diet". Dieting is NOT an option ever again. Really do give yourself permission to eat what you want...if you eat it slowly, savoring each bite, you will be very satisfied with a lot less than you think. I'm amazed every day at 1) how much less I eat when I eat slowly and with awareness and 2) how I really don't think about food very much at all.

Let's keep this thread alive!

realitymom 04-02-2008 05:28 PM

Week 3 for me using Paul's techniques & it is working miracles for me! I have lost 8 pounds, but more importantly I feel better & in control of my eating. I was counting calories & continue to use the calorie counting site I am on & find I am eating apprx. 300-500 LESS calories eating what I WANT! Amazing. :)

OhCharlie 04-03-2008 08:06 AM

Way to go REALITYMOM!!! I find that I really WANT a salad here and there...and some veggies. It's like your body will tell you what it's missing. I knew I'd been a little lean on the veggies for a couple of days but then yesterday I wanted nothing BUT veggies!

You mentioned being "in control"...for me that's the real success in this approach to eating. The pounds lost (or not lost!) are secondary.

realitymom 04-03-2008 08:58 AM

Thanks ohcharlie! I also am surprised to learn what foods are actually pretty gross when you chew them 20 times, paying attention to the taste (fast food french fries....BLECH!) Learned pop gives me heartburn...go figure! My heartburn has almost completely vanished, another blessing for me.(used to eat 3 to 6 Tums daily! ACK!!) Yeah, the loss of pounds are nice, but feeling better & control is the BEST part of this system!

dollyfinn 04-03-2008 10:55 AM

Hey, I just wanted to jump in and tell my experience with the program. I have been using Paul McKenna's CD's for over a year now. I ordered them from England last March. I have not really lost much weight but over the last year I found out that I have Celiac's disease and have been dealing with that more than trying to lose. Anyway, he has a great Over Eating CD that has totally cured me of most of my emotional eating. And, last week, my dad was in the hospital and I wanted to binge but couldn't make myself. That is huge for me.
I also have a girlfriend in England who lost close to 150lbs by just watching his program and using his advice. It does work!!!!

So, if you have the chance to purchase his CD (which I am sure he will soon be selling in the US) they are totally worth it. I think it might be hard to do his program without the CD's to reinforce the ideas. But, his program can work for people. It might take some time but it can work!!
Good luck everyone!!

pattygirl63 04-03-2008 01:25 PM

Hello there. This thread is getting busy. I understand there is another one but I couldn't find anything except under food news which looks to be people who are getting started to if you want to check it out.

Aleka - isn't it great to be 60 and find something like this? I'm 64 and I've looked for something like this allllll my life.

OhCharlie - I agree with you that it is wonderful to feel so empowered and "normal" around food. I'm going on a trip next week and the nice thing about it will be that I won't be sitting wondering if I can eat what is served. I can just eat sensibly and go on and not feel guilty because I ate OP.

Realitymom - Contratulations on the weight loss. I've learned that there are a lot of foods that I used to think I wanted to eat when dieting that I have no desire for now. It is really interesting how my eating and desires have changed since I started using Paul McKenna's 4 Golden Rules. Yesterday DH had to go to the doctor and then to Walmart to get his meds. We always go out to eat on these kind of days. Left Walmart and amazingly I didn't buy any food items which was very unusual. Then DH asked me where I wanted to go to eat and I told him "I don't know beause I'm not hungry". He said he wasn't hungry either so we just came home. I fixed him breakfast for dinner and I had roasted chicken and a salad. I love a good salad and always have now I'm finding that I want salads a lot.

Dollyfinn - thanks for sharing with us. I understand we can get a book with a cd from Amazon and I plan to order one when I get back from my trip. I also understand that they will selling his book in other bookstores in the future, but I can't remember if they said when.

OhCharlie 04-03-2008 05:57 PM

I ordered the 6 DVD set which claims to have "extra" strategies that you won't see on TV, etc..when they get here I will be glad to share what I find out!!

dollyfinn 04-03-2008 07:41 PM

The 6 CD set is what I have had since March. If my house were on fire, besides my animals, I would make certain I got the CD's out. They are that good as far as I am concerned!!!

OhCharlie 04-04-2008 04:59 AM

DOLLYFIN...Thanks for the endorsement! Too bad the shipping from the UK to here is sooo sloooowww! Will probably still be another 2-3 weeks before my order arrives. But in the meantime, I'm working with what I've been able to put together from the TV shows.

dollyfinn 04-04-2008 05:20 AM

Good luck Charlie!!!!

aleka 04-04-2008 06:20 AM

TGIF!

RealityMom, congratulations on your weight loss. That's fantastic losing 8 lbs. in 3 weeks. It's great eating what you want and losing weight. I too have found that I want healthier food. I had celery for a snack the other day and I never realized it tasted so good. I always considered celery diet food and wouldn't eat it unless it was in tuna salad or chicken salad.

OhCharlie, that's great you ordered the 6 CD set. Let us know how you like the CDs. I too am working with what has been on TV.

pattygirl, I too have been trying to find a program like this for a long time. I reached a certain age and just did not want to count another calorie, carb, or point. I've read a few books on the subject of Intuitive Eating, but nothing clicked until I saw Paul McKenna's first show. I do find it harder to lose weight at this age.

dollyfinn, first off, congratulations to your girlfriend who lost 150 lbs. using his methods. That is quite impressive. The best part is knowing that by eating this way she will keep it off. Thank you for sharing your information. I'll have to check out the bookstore for his book.

Hope all of you have a great weekend.

OhCharlie 04-04-2008 06:29 PM

Just wondering: What are you eating now that you didn't allow yourself when you were in "diet mode"? For me it's been real (not turkey) Italian meatballs and pasta! I don't tend to go for the sweets very much...give me savory ANY day!! The diet mindset always made me crave sugar..probably because it was against "the rules"! LOL Have a great weekend everybody!!

Barb

dollyfinn 04-04-2008 08:10 PM

When I first went on this program I went a little crazy with the food. But, after a while the craziness went away and now I mostly just want the healthier choices. I think there is no problem with wanting the "real stuff" for things but you will also start to off set your real food with healthy choices. Like have your real meat balls and then you will find yourself craving a salad to go with it. No one and nothing is making me eat the veggies, i just find myself craving them. Weird and wonderful at the same time!!!;)

dollyfinn 04-04-2008 08:13 PM

oh, one more quick example, I have a huge bag of dove chocolate squares in my kitchen that I have been eating at for several months now. I go into the bag thinking that I will eat all of them and end up only ever eating one at a time. How great is that-no will power required!!

OhCharlie 04-05-2008 11:01 AM

I hear ya Dollyfinn! I find I do want the salads and the fresh wholesome stuff equally as much as I want the-foods-formerly-known-as-forbidden. Good deal with the Dove chocolates...exactly how a naturally thin person would treat them. No urgency to eat them all up and then start a diet AGAIN! You can take them or leave them. That is the beauty of reprogramming your relationship with food. I've never thought the food was the problem...it was always what I was using it for. Boredom can be a real issue with me..but food IS NOT entertainment (no matter how much it seems to be!! lol) nor is it company. It's just fuel. Period. I am still in the process of sorting all this out!!!

Barb

realitymom 04-05-2008 06:10 PM

I have never been a big fan of salads, just like them occasionally & moreso during the warmer months. But I am finding that veggies are better tasting during those 20 chews & filling! Been craving green beans like nobodies business & that is a craving I am happy to have! Still not a fan of celery, but that is ok! lol
Hope everyone is having a great weekend! ~RM

I'm not obese but I need to lose 15 - 20 lbs I just feel better
keep me posted . I'm not computer savvy my DS had to sign me up.I'll try to post more often DH or DS are on the computer so I haven't been on much.

I hope to see you ladies around the boards let me know where you post We are all trying to lose weight so we can encourage each other no matter what program or diet we are on

Judy

dollyfinn 04-06-2008 08:41 AM

Judy-I know that TLC is replaying all of the episodes so I would look at your TV listings and try to view it.
if you go to his website- McKenna dot com (I can't give the link) you will find where he describes the 4 steps in detail.
scroll through all the pages so you can read his full explanations.
It really won't make as much sence unless you read the full explanations

hope that this helps!!

OhCharlie 04-06-2008 09:54 AM

Hey Judy!! As far as I know this is as good a place to post as any! I hear ya about being in your 50's. I turned 50 last month and have struggled with my weight always. I now think that if I'd never gone on that first crash diet in college, I'd be fine today..that just kicked off a lifetime of "on" or "off" thinking because in the 70's you had to be a stick figure/disco queen! I was neither! .. oh well...better late than never as far as normalizing attitudes about food! I do know this: I really need to ramp up my exercise. Starting this week, I'm going to walk my 18 holes of golf (twice a week, minimum) rather than ride the cart. Will also mix in some yoga and weights. Seems that since beginning this way of eating I really feel GOOD about exercise..

I caught another TLC episode of Paul McKenna when he talked about the repulsion/compulsion techniques. Oh boy... it just reinforced to me how much of this weight thing really is MENTAL! The part about making negative associations with your binge foods..OMG..I was so nauseous!!! All of these components put together really are powerful!

Zumba Chick 04-06-2008 03:29 PM

Thank you for the quick response I looked in the tv guide we get in the Sun paper & the show is coming on tonight at 8:oo &9:oopm. I'll probably tape them I taped one Fri night so I might have a repeat of a show I guess that's better then not having or missing a show Thanks for your help

Hope you all have a BLESSED WEEK!! I'm going to try to exercise more too also are you ladies doing all the tech or just doing them along with a certain diet (I know it's not a diet )I mean eating plan ect. You know what I mean
Are you really eating what you want & not gaining weight ? MY problem is portion size I eat lots of vegs &healthy foods & not exercising I'll try to keep you posted I hope to hear from all of you soon

Judy

pattygirl63 04-06-2008 03:56 PM

Sorry I haven't been around much and next week or so won't be much better as we leave Tuesday to go to DD for a week. I may be able to check in a few times on her computer. We'll see.

Aleka - I know what you are talking about. I think diets can work because I have had some success to a point on a few, but I have dieted for most of my life... at least 40 years. I just can't go another diet. WW points didn't work for me because they said you had to eat all the points even when I felt stuffed I had to use them. However, I know people who have done great on WW. I could have done WW Core, but there was so little in their book that you could eat. When you went out to eat, you were so restricted. And I hate counting calories. I guess that is why Intuitive Eating was so great to me and when I added the techniques of P. McKenna that just made it terrific.

I had planned to weigh only on the 1st of each month but ended up weighing today as Sunday used to be my WI day and I have lost 3 lbs. I had been excited that my weight had stabblized from being on IE. I think that had to happen first. All week I would have days I wasn't hungry and then have days that I seemed to be really hungry all the time. I think I had to learn to recognize when I was genuinely hungry. I am so excited to find that I am actually doing good and I am starting to see results with the scales and my clothes. I just checked and Paul McKenna will be on TLC tonight at 8 pm & 9 pm EST.

OhCharlie - When you ordered your dvds from him how long did they say it would take to get it. I haven't ordered them because I didn't want them to arrive while I'm gone. If it takes 2 - 3 weeks, I think I could go ahead and order them.

I too am finding that I really enjoy the good healthy foods. Went out to eat at Chili's yesterday. I always loved their Classic Nachos. I ate about 3/4 of it and then asked the waitress to take the plate so that I would not eat any more. I knew I was satisfied, but might keep eating it out of habit. I have really had a good week just using his 4 Golden Rules. I hope I'll be able to do as well while on vacation.

pattygirl63 04-06-2008 04:04 PM

I forgot to share something I did this week more as an experiment to see if the craving technique really worked. If you remember, I did the technique last week with his show to stop craving DH Heath bars. Well, I decided to try eating a couple to just see what would happen. The only way I can describe it is that they tasted like eating soap. They were absolutely awful. I asked DH if they were old as they tasted terrible. He said, "No, they taste fine. I thought you weren't going to eat them any more." I assured him that I would never be eating another one. So this really does work and it does last.

OhCharlie 04-06-2008 04:59 PM

Pattygirl: Interesting outcome with the Heath Bars!! I can live forever without chocolate-- toffee and caramel are my BIG craves! To answer your question, they said that I should have them about 28 days from time of order. Have a great week everyone!!

Barb

cmakela 04-06-2008 05:05 PM

The Paul McKenna technique

I, too, have started using Paul McKenna's techniques and am happy with the results. I am using my own self-designed calorie-based diet in which I eat everything including desserts but I'm eating when I feel hungry instead of when it is meal time. I, too, am eating fewer calories that way - about 200 - 300 fewer than the 1600 I allot myself daily. I had been stuck on a plateau. The other day I got on the scale and was down three pounds. I can feel the difference. Now I want to concentrate on dealing with cravings. I haven't had any in the past week but I know I will experience cravings in the future and I want to be ready.

pattygirl63 04-06-2008 07:03 PM

Constance I see you are also into volumetrics, right? I read a little about that but didn't want to buy another book. I found it interesting in the amount of raisins (don't remember, but I think they said 1/4 c) is 100 calories and 2 c grapes is 100 calories. I think Paul McKenna's Techniques will work with any diet or way of eating.

realitymom 04-13-2008 12:28 PM

Just wanted to pop in & check in with everyone! How are ya'll doing? Still going great here. Week 4 on Tuesday, looking foward to seeing if the scale actually agrees with my clothes on the amount of weight I am losing. I am down a pants size & am so positive that these techniques will assist me in my weightloss success! Looking foward to being an 'after'...heehee

Hope everyone had a great week! ~RM

ddc 04-13-2008 05:41 PM

Good for you, RM. My pants are alot looser too!
Tonight's the last episode :(

Keep up the good work!
