Default Exercise chit chat for 1-18-06

What kind of exercise do you usually get during the day? What do you really enjoying doing? What do you just really dread? How much exercise have you gotten this week????? Have you ever taken any sort of exercise class? Do you have any embarrassing exercise moments????? What can we do as your support group to get you more *gung ho* on getting daily exercise atleast 30 mins a day????

Here's a few exercise tips for you to remember:

Design a routine workout that works best for you. It should combine cardio and weights. If you are trying to lose weight, you will need more cardio to burn fat. I would recommend your routine consist of 5 days of cardio and 2 or 3 days of weights. You may not be able to start out at this pace, but you can work up to this as you improve.

You should plan to change your routine every six weeks or so. This will keep the body from becoming used to the same routine. If you do the same workout all the time, the body will build up a tolerance and you will not get as much benefit. When you change your routine workout, you shock your body and it has to work harder to perform the different moves. You can change your routine workout in a variety of ways - increase the intensity, amount of weights, repetitions, length of time, workout days, workout time, equipment, type of workout or a combination. Changing your routine workout often will also keep you from getting bored.

The first exercise tip is always have a good mix of cardio and weights. Start at your pace and gradually increase as you are able. Push yourself out of your comfort zone. We have all heard the old saying “no pain, no gain.” It is true. If you want to change your body, you have to work at it. Just showing up at the gym will not do a thing for you.
Where you work out is not as important as how often and how hard you work out. I prefer to go to the gym because that gives me more motivation and options and I will work out harder at the gym than I will at home. But you can still get a good workout at home. So do what works best for you.

It's highly recommended working with a personal trainer for at least a couple of sessions. It is very important to learn the proper form and way to do the exercises in order to get the benefit and avoid injury.

One of the best exercises you can do is the squat. This will work all the muscles in your legs and your glutes. Another good exercise tip is to incorporate a stability ball into your workout. By balancing on the ball, you engage your core muscles, so you are targeting more areas with one exercise. Sit on the ball to do shoulder presses or bicep curls. Or lay on the ball instead of a bench to do chest presses. By doing abdominal exercises on the ball, like crunches, you will work your abs about 20% more.

A good exercise tip for lifting weights is to work opposing muscle groups without resting between sets. For example, work the quadriceps and then immediately work the hamstrings without resting in between.

A very important exercise tip is to be sure to drink plenty of water during and after your workout. I also recommend having a protein shake after your workout, especially if you lifted weights. This will aid in the recovery process and help build lean muscle mass.

I have done tones of exercise classes. I have done every kind of aerobic class that there is to do. I have also done the horrible spinning class. I have a Pilates machine that I use, but I need to do it more often. I also have a set of kick boxing DVDs that kick your rear. I am going to do one of them today. I always have to wait until my husband leaves for work because I don't like exercising in front of my hubby. He weighs less than I do and eats everything and anything he wants. I also walk in the summers with my girlfriends. I love to go walking!

I've tried EVERYTHING! Unfortunately, I never stick to ANYTHING! That, in a nutshell is why I always gain the weight back!

I like to walk. That is why I am so excited to use the treadmill while Robert is in therapy. I don't mind it at all and it is good for me. I think if I lose some weight doing this at therapy, I will be able to convince Robert to get me one for home, so I am doubly committed to doing this while I have to drive him!!

I also decided this morning, while looking in the mirror that i DEFINITELY need to start some crunches!!!! My tummy - YUCK!

Thumbs up

Yes, I also start and stop exercising all the time. I did a yoga class for a while but hurt my muscle in my calf so I missed a lot of classes and never went back but I did like it.

I and aiming now for 30 min., 3x's/wk at the place I joined (like Curves)....I do enjoy it and have such energy when I leave there. Went yesterday for the first time in 2 wks. I will go twice this week and start the 3 x's next week. I believe I found where I belong!!!

When I lose some weight and get in better shape I will try those balls, they tried to get me on one and I backed off--now that would have been an embarrassing story to tell.....they have every thing there and some of those women are amazing, of course they are a lot younger than me too!!!!

But I'll keep on trying

Go Phyllis go!! I have just started a new exercise routine and I am hoping I stick to it. M-W-F I go to the gym/Y and do a 20 min/1 mile walk on the treadmill, then I head to the Quick Fit room which is just like curves but you can adjust the weights as you need to for a 30 min workout. So that is a 50 min workout 3x's a day and then on Thurs & Friday, I am going to walk. If my work schedule allowed it I would prefer doing the gym M-W-F and walking T & Thurs but it doenst' allow me that time.

I am so bummed. I took Robert to therapy, but when we got there, we found out the power was out. They have a generator to run the lights and such, but no power for the treadmill! I sat on the stationary bike for about 15 min, but I HATE that thing! So my 30 min workout was a bust today! It figures, I get myself all psyched up to go 3 times a week and the powers that be conspire against me! No fair!

The good news is, Robert and I talked while he was in therapy. He said maybe we could join a gym after this. I mentioned there was one right around the corner from where Michelle goes to dance lessons. I was hoping to join that one and kill an hour or so while she is dancing. He was very receptive to the idea. We'll have to see after he recovers if he steps up to the plate and helps with all the driving for Bobby so that I can have the free time I would need to go to the gym!!! I usually run from one childs activity to the others and back again.

Lets hope nothing interferes with my time on the treadmill on Friday!!

Sorry Sharon.....I hate that when you get all geared up to do something and it falls through. At least you did some exercise and the talk with your dh was a good one, I hope he will follow thru with it. A lot of gyms have specials if husband and wife join together.

Good Luck,
Phyllis

Thanks Phyllis! Robert is really trying to encourage me to exercise more, so I may just get him to follow through with it this time!!

I've been so careful with my eating for the last year and yet, no weight loss to speak of. It is obvious I need regular exercise! And he is really trying to help me lose this weight. That has been one big bonus from his accident - he and I have more time to REALLY talk. I think if I can manage to drop some pounds while using the therapy's treadmill it will convince him that a gym membership will be worth the money!!!

I did 30 mins of kickboxing cardio and it just about killed me. I am going to try to do it again on Fri. and then 3x a week. At least I started it today. I have been putting it off because I just don't like doing exercises.

Dh has decided that I need tohelp him with yard work on Sunday - ewww. He says - it will help you lose weight faster - that's what you want isn't it?

Hmmm...

Not sure about that one - suspect ulterior motives... LOL...

I'm lucky in that I have a gym at work that only costs me $17 a month. It comes with free personal training and nutrition counseling. I have issues in that I had knee surgery about 6 months ago and I can never in my life again do a squat, a lunge, or any other exercise that bends my knee more than a 30degree angle. Makes it tough sometimes.

I found I exercise best in the mornings. I do 60 minutes of cardio and 30 minutes of strength training 5 days a week. I try to get in more cardio on the weekends but I don't always do so well with that.

Yard work?! Baby, you tell that man that if you want to see nature, you go to a park like a normal person! Green Acres, here we come! Good grief! Have him to clean the house for good measure. Tell him it's great circuit training for whatever sport he's interested in... smile.

I'm getting started with the gym again. It gets so cold here in the winter that any extra motivation to get anywhere is desperately needed. I prefer mornings but evenings have been working well this time around. I need a buddy or I slack and skip.

I joined Bally's in 2005 through the Discovery Channel Body Challenge. You can still sign up for 8 free weeks (it started last Saturday) and I think they offer a few weeks free through their website, too, if you miss the deadline. It did the Challenge in 2004 and lost the weight the first time. In 2005 I just needed some toning. This year, I need both! They have great menus, meal planners and exercise journals and suggestions on the Discovery Health website.

I have few more tips:

To tone, perform more repetitions with a lower weight. That would be 5-20 pounds 20-40+ times as opposed to weight building where you lift as much as you can a few times.

To beef up your crunches and get the most impact: Contract your abs as hard as you can on every rep you perform. Hold the contraction as you stretch back down. You'll be exhausted faster but you'll see the results faster, too! We can keep this up!

Knowing I went to the gym three times already this week feels better than Extra Strength Midol and a lower back rub!

Check if gyms in your area have childcare or children's activities! A local gym here does and their family rate is very reasonable. I think YMCA's usually do, too.
