yes, you read that right--a new guy. as in male. hope that's cool. checking out forums and this one seemed active and productive, so i decided to break gender conventions and join up. maybe i will become remarkably popular here as some sort of "novelty" poster.
here's the scoop. my wife and i are both bigger than we'd like to be. decided to start making better food and exercise choices. i am a week+ into this whole new thing and have dropped ten lbs. even. good start. we'll see how it goes from here.
i am just looking to share info, support, ideas, etc. with others who are trying to improve their situations, too. i think this might be a good outlet for that sort of thing.
Welcome to the boards, you will find lots of support here. Any specific diet plan you are on? WTG on the 10 lb weight loss, that's great. I've been on the South Beach for 4 days now and i'm down 5 lbs. If you have any questions, there's lots of ppl here who can help. Good luck with your weight loss goal!
Welcome, the more the merrier! I have seen some other male posts around, but you are definitely outnumbered, as you know! :-)
I have 80 to lose, my first weigh in is tomorrow morning, I would love to post a 10 lb loss then, but know you guys are just wired differently for weight loss and that's ok.
Stick around, lots of good stuff here, I just joined last week myself!

Holy crap, that's cool you lost so much right away. What did you change in your diet? Are you doing something specific, or did you just cut out the crap food?
My husband and I are both bigger, too, and we just had a baby that we want to get in shape to raise (and so I feel better about having another). I'm walking, using a stability ball, and trying to atleast think about what I put in my mouth instead of just eating eating eating.
Are you both working on this together? How much are you trying to lose?
1) no more soda pop. i have long been a pop addict. a 20 oz. bottle in the a.m., one or two 32+ oz. fountain drinks during the day, 2-3 12 oz. cans in the evening. i just cut it out completely and have replaced it with hot tea at home and a couple of giant iced teas throughout the workday, all of it loaded with lemon juice. i am also making sure i drink a lot of water--i want to make sure i am not just dehydrating myself, considering the diuretic properties of tea and lemon juice.
2) no more white starchy stuffs. potatoes are out. pasta is out. white rice? gonzo. if i have to have something from what we used to call the "bread and cereal group," it's whole grain. and consumed in moderation. i am not necessarily sold on all the underlying science of atkins, but i do think that restriction of carbs to some extent (particularly the white ones) makes sense.
3) better meat choices. less meat in general, but when i go carnivorous i go for fish or chicken (white meat), etc.
4) fruit and vegetables. lots of them. salad of some sort before every meal. plenty of veggies. luckily, unlike many, i dig f&v so that is not a major disappointment.
5) minimizing fat intake. not eliminating, but decreasing. phony butter, less oil, fat-free salad dressing, etc.
6) portion control. i am the kind of guy who could easily wipe out a plate with a 32 oz. porterhouse and a loaded baked potato after eating some sort of fried appetizer and a salad floating in a sea of bleu cheese dressing. and would still be willing to finish your fries if you were full. so, i am eating until i am not hungry--not until i feel ready to explode.
i have been trying to move more, but am yet to embark on anything resembling a formal workout plan. my objective is to get that particular show on the road as of wednesday.
