Trying again

  • Hello, I'm John. I've been steadily gaining weight for my whole life, over the years I've tryed to drop a few lbs. but I just get bigger every year. Now I'm at 375 Lbs. and It's starting to effect my work and is becoming really uncomfortable for me.......My wife Tammy is a trooper and does everything she can to help me but in the end it's my battle and I have to win it. Portion sizes are my weakness, Tammy cooks very healthy and tasty and there are rarely left overs.
I have a tread mill that Ive walked on every night for 1 mile for the last 4 months, I've worn out 2 elliptical machines in the last 4 years. My doctor says I have a heart like a freight train and to double my efforts if the weight isn't coming off.
I'm pretty determined this time and hope to finaly see results.
I have been reading threads on this forum for advise on a few things and decided to jump on in and say hi...............Hi

    Regards....John
  • Welcome from a fellow 3 fat chicks fella. Best of luck and welcome and if you want another guy to talk to just get in touch. Theres also a mens corner if you want to have a look around. Best of luck and dont be afraid to ask, we are all here because of one common goal!
  • John, if you want exercise to have a bearing on your weight loss, it takes an hour a day minimum 6 days a week. Congratulations on making a start, just keep increasing it a little at the time. We also need strength training as well as aerobic/cardio. That builds muscle and eliminates fat.

Good luck on your journey. As you can see from my stats, I was nearly your weight when I started getting healthy. Weigh and measure portions until you can accurately judge them.
  • JOHN ~ glad you found us here; this is a very supportive place with lots of great people & advice.

Firstly, I would caution a man not to cut his calories too low; that could be a grave error -- the body can & will panic and refuse to let the weight go.

Second, I would recommend LIFTING WEIGHTS every other day; find a good place or source so you can do it right (at a gym or at home; get advice from a professional trainer to get started). I do handbells EOD and I can really see my arms have slimmed down; and this activity raises your metabolic rate around the clock.

I also do toning exercises daily; and nothing beats walking, so keep that up. To stave off the hunger issue, fill up on things like soup and a salad before eating your main entrees, esp for lunch and dinner. For breakfast, oatmeal or other whole grain cereal & fruit are a great option for men; having an egg & 1 slice of whole grain toast with it now & then for protein too (I've tried the turkey bacon and like it).

TIP: have a large breakfast, a medium-sized lunch, and smaller dinner (with lots of soup, salad, and veggies). You can have small snacks in between meals; focus on protein first though.

Give special attention to lean meats, salads, soups, veggies (at least 2 servings), dairy (if you can tolerate it), fruit, and whole grain carbs in moderation -- simple, but effective really.

There is a men's forum here that you can post in, but you are not limited by that; and the ladies have so much good advice that they can share with you too ... good luck!

  • Welcome to 3FC John! It is great to have you on-board. My little tidbit of advice is that YOU CAN DO IT! I think you are going to find a lot of support here. Look around, read the inspirational stories, and get involved with challenges. Good luck and I look forward to your posts!
  • Welcome to 3FC =)

It's not actually exercise that's going to be the brunt of your weight loss.

Don't get me wrong, activity is GREAT for the body, and can help strengthen muscles get energy levels up. So many good things about exercising! And adding in daily activity is phenomenal for your health!

However... it takes a CALORIE deficit to lose pounds. And the most effective way of doing that is to watch your food intake. Sadly, yes, it means looking at portions. But, it's really it's not bad. We just have to make sustainable changes. Things we know we can stick with. You can do this

  • Great job on walking on the treadmill!! 1 mile is an awesome start!! Keep it going and good luck with your efforts!!
  • Welcome aboard! I agree with the above - definitely aim for about an hour every day. Forty-five minutes at least, I'd say. Hope that helps!
