Just wanted to say hello, and that my name is Nicky and I plan on losing some pounds! I am 184 as of today, and plan on losing 20 pounds as a mini goal. Ultimately, I would like to end up somewhere between 150-155 pounds. I am 5'7" and pretty proportionate, but all this extra weight is depressing me. I didn't mind going from a size 6 pre- college to a size 10 post college, but now 5 years after graduation, I am wavering between a size 10 and 12. At my highest I was 192, and my lowest in the past year has been 175. I just really need to level out and steadily lose weight. Also, I have a vacation coming up at tne end of June, and am going away for my 27th b-day, so I would like to look good in a bikini.
So , time to buck up! I have been hitting the gym for a few weeks now, but since doing some online research I realized that I wasn't eating properly. I eat a Mediterranean diet, and do not eat chicken, beef or pork, but sometimes I just go a little too calorie crazy bc cooking and dining out is a hobby of mine. I am always active, but I am not being smart enough. Today is that day where all that changes. In 3 days I lost one pound with my new mindset, so that's a start.
From what I've seen here everyone seems supportive, honest, helpful, and really cool. Thanks for coming by this thread to take a peak and read my ramble.
i am almost exactly with you. i'm 28 and am currently 185 pounds (having spent most of the year at 175, but winter in VT is tough to get through without gaining some weight) and would love to get down to the upper 150s. I'm 5'10" so carry the weight well, and have always been muscular, but i really need to lighten up a bit, not least to make my knees happier when i'm out hiking or jogging.
i spent the last several years in nyc, so i know how tempting all those wonderful restaurants, cafes, and martini bars are, but i really miss how much i walked when i was in the city. here there are great opportunites for exercise, but to get from place to place i drive, so overall i'm less consistently active.
Well at 5' 10" i know you probably don't look "overweight" or whatever other silly words they might use for us chicks who don't fall into the typical BMI strata. People say I hide my weight well...but then they see me in a bathing suit. HAHA.
Point is, I am glad to meet you here! Definitely let me know how your progress is going. I would love for us to stay in touch on here for support. I felt weird about admitting my weight, but eh you know what I think getting out of dark about it all feels pretty good!
You're right about NYC lots of good walking counteracted by devilishly good food.
perhaps i should have said, "i like to THINK i carry the weight well"....b/c as you say there's always the confrontation with the bathing suit to knock me back down! but i refuse to beat myself up too much. as long as i can do the things i love (hike, bike, jog, look good in stilettos) i'm happy, even as i'd like to remove some of the pounds. unfortunately, i seriously love to cook. at least that allows me to know what i'm putting into my mouth, but it does mean food stays on my mind a lot of the time! now if there were only fewer farms and more bars that serve up a truly dry martini in my neck of the woods, i would spend more time out of the kitchen.
anyway, would love to be site buddies. feel free to keep in touch for support, angst-ridding, ideas for recipes, tricks for maintaining the saintly halo of abstemiousness. (i just had the brilliant idea of moving a plate of cookies that recent visitors left from my thesis-writing area to my housemate's pillow, where they are happily out of sight and mind. feeling very clever about that!)
Nicky!! My name is Alexis, and I am from NYC too. What part of NYC are you from? I live in Brooklyn, but work in Queens. Can't wait till the weather gets nicer, I am looking forward in taking some nice long walks.
Sylvia- I totally share that LOVE of cooking with you! Same thing here, it stays on my mind all day long bc not only do I love food, but I love making it, tasting it, trying it. Ugh Food is my second boyfriend. Haha
Site buddies sounds awesome. If you have a recipe for anything involving potatoes, I am looking for a really good low cal low fat one. I think I found a good one the other day so I might post it soon, but I wanted to double check on the fat content!
Hi Lexi!
I Live in BK too! And unfortunately... work in Times Square. I was just thinking about taking a nice long walk to Union Square after work, but I already went to the gym today and I am wearing heels to work. Booo! Where do you usually go for walks when youre in BK?
wish i could help you with that one. the fact is, potatoes are essentially the only vegetable that i don't love and eat to excess. (i'm famous in some circles for veggie binging....could be worse things to binge on, right?) anyway, other than those little red ones that i'll eat if someone puts in front of me, i avoid the things.
part of me thinks that that's some kind of internal reaction to the anti carb thing....left to my own devices, almost everything i would eat would be carbs, but even so i haven't ordered, or cooked, pasta in years. silly rule, when i still happily gnosh on bread and cookies, when they're in front of me.
anyway. today i cooked a super yummy and garlicky beet salad. i freaking love beets. i also recently discovered stonyfield yogurt's new greek variety....the fat free is still wonderfully thick, and only 110 calories for a container. i'm eating that over a tangerine for bfast tomorrow, i've already decided!

ps: annoying, but it says i can't send a private message until i've posted 10 times, so am reposting here!
Sorry I havent come back to this posting in awhile. I am still getting used to this forum and trying to find the message again for me was some kind of feat for some reason.
Anyway- I like potatoes a lot, but I totally hear you on the carb thing! Bein full Italian it is a SIN for me not to eat pasta. I mean, whew it's so steeped into what my family makes and cooks, I dont really know how to make certain dishes without it. My carb avoidant food is always bagels. I see a bagel and i run for the hills. "No bagel you aint gettin me!" ::Makes mad dash:: When I found out how many calories are in those babies I was heartbroken. How could something SO good be so wrong. ugh I guess for those of you who like cheesecake it's the same thing. I don't really like it too much so it's doesnt break my heart when I hear cheesecake is 1,000,000 calories.
