I found this board via google, seems like the most active board I can find.
1 thing though, I am a man.....
Anyway, my wife and I are on a diet, and I lost 14 pounds in 2 weeks, now I seemed to have plateaued I am a tad frustrated... How do you folks deal with a plateau?
We've got some guys floating around here, so don't feel like you're all alone.
14 pounds in 2 weeks is great! Has your loss just slowed or are you completely not losing anything anymore? How long has it been since you showed a weight loss?
Sometimes a lot of initial weight loss is water weight, and then you slow down into a 2-3 pound a week loss. If it's been a few weeks since you lost anything and you're POSITIVE the scale isn't moving, try cutting back a little on calories or whatever it is you're trying to watch, and maybe add in some exercise a few days a week.
Of course men are allowed! We have a few here and there. Don't get miffed if we mistakenly think you're a girl, though! It's happened before.
Welcome!
As for your plateau, I wouldn't worry at this point. 14 pounds in 2 weeks is a huge amount to lose. Most diets that are safe advocate losing 1-2 pounds per week, although certain diets do start you off with a huge drop.
What diet are you following or are you changing your lifestyle to a more healthy one? Most of us that are long-timers have come to the realization that diets don't really work and that lifestyle changes do. I invite you to look around at all the different areas of the forum and jump in where ever you feel comfortable.
You are most welcome to join the roost . . . after all we all appreciate the company of a rooster. As mentioned we do have some other gentlemen around here and it probably won't be long before they find you.
In the meantime, tell us a little more about your weight-loss efforts. Are you using any special type of plan; are you exercising, etcetera. As mentioned by Wildfyre, the initial loss is a lot of water and things are bound to slow down. Just hang in there and you'll discover your pattern as you trot along the road to better health and fitness.
Hope we'll be seeing a lot less of you, a lot more often now that you've found us. Have a great moving and shaking kind of evening, boyyo.
We are following the Transitions Lifestyle System, I guess it is similar to Sugar Busters, I am having a fairly easy time of it and I have not strayed from it, except 1 time while out of town.
I lost the 14 pounds from the 10th to the 27th. I weighed last night and was the same, now I may be jumping the gun as far as plateauing goes. I had just eaten dinner less than an hour before weighing and it was later in the evening.
I have a wife and 4 kids, I am a very busy man so eating right was not always my priority. My wife mentioned the diet to lose baby weight so I jumped on board with her.
I am a professional firefighter so I have always exercised, I just had no real idea what nutrition was all about.
My stats are in my fitday profile. I am currently 6'1 269, 33%BF 37% MM
Looking forward to the advice I get here. Thanks Again
Definitely think you got a little ahead of yourself. Your best bet is to pick a time and day to weigh each week . . . preferably in the morning . . . preferably after attending to bodily functions. Most of us cannot resist stepping on the scales every morning or so, but you will see a lot of fluctuations on a daily basis and you have to just learn to ignore them. At least you will not have to deal with the TOM situation every month, but I'm sure your body goes through cycles when it retains a lot of water too. At least your job keeps you fairly active and that should be a help for losing weight, but watch out for those FireHall dinners . . . my brother is a captain at a hall in Toronto . . . what they cook up is usually delicious but not always 'diet friendly'. Good luck.
its not a real plateau unless it lasts 2-3 weeks- patience my good man! Quite often after a rapid drop like you had ( which was probably mostly water) the body has a period where it needs to rebalance itself before it moves on.
never ever weigh yourself at the end of the day! I am a daily weigher, in the morning I will fluctuate as much as 3-4 lbs, at night I am usually 4-8 lbs heavier. SO much can affect your weight, remember unless you eat 3500 calories extra you did not "gain a pound overnight". Nor did you "lose a pound overnight" no matter what the scale says.
Welcome in! We always love to have a man's opinion and viewpoint on the subjects, so jump right in where ever you feel comfortable.
I, too, believe your body is just making adjustments to your new eating habits, and will be on track shortly, so hang in there! In addition, even with being a normal active male you may find that you need to add a little bit of extra exercise, whether it be walking, lifting weights or using one of the various exercise machines out there to keep your weight loss moving.
You need to also remember that while you may see a huge drop in weight over the first couple weeks with many plans, they do usually level out to about a pound or two a week. Therefore, if you see the scale movement slowing down a little bit, don't get discouraged, just keep doing what you're doing!
this is finally something I am going to do 100%. Yesterday, I let loose for superbowl sunday, a few beers and a few snacks, but I am still right on track.
I think with the support I see on these boards, I will have no problem staying focused on the prize!!
