Thanks for this thread! I've been feeling like I "should be" exercising more if I want to up my weight loss. I've been walking when I can and thought I needed to escalate to a more heavy duty program but it sounds like I'm on the right track. I just love it that I want to move more!!

Exercise won't really increase your losses on IP BUT it WILL help you maintain a healthy lifestyle beyond Phase 1. If you ramp up anything, perhaps just increase the consistency of your walks. The nice thing about IP is that we DON'T have to beat ourselves up ala Biggest Loser style

I exercised long before I started tackling my diet. When I went on IP, I waited six weeks. You deplete glycogen stores in your muscles when going into ketosis and your body requires a couple of weeks to adjust to this. You will know it. After the waiting period, I started my daily 30 min with Jillian Michaels again, leaving out aerobics exercises. You should not go longer periods over 65% of your maximal heart rate when in ketosis, because you risk that your body starts cannibalizing muscle for energy. Strength training is fine, but be aware that you cannot build muscle when doing a 100% 800 calories IP program. I always ate 1100-1200 calories/day (mostly adding protein and some fat) and maintained muscle just fine, actually added some in the process, but slowly. I did not care about the speed of my losses, I cared mainly about inches and looks. I guess I have to since I am a slow looser on any type of diet. If you never exercised before, take it slow, but do something regularly like walking, swimming or biking.
