Hi all - Day 5 today - I know I shouldn't but I've been getting on the scale every morning - today I'm down 5 pounds from Tuesday am when I started! It does make it a little easier to get through another day til I really adjust to the new way of doing things.

Is it normal to be tired? I haven't had too many side effects - but I don't really wake up feeling refreshed yet - and I used to before I started.

Thanks!

sonolady 08-17-2013 08:44 AM

Good morning, its a glorious weekend in MA! Some painting, yard work, house cleaning and then hang at the pool.

msbbarber It is normal, the body is adjusting, drink all your water, take your vitamins, stick with the plan, it does work. Lisa has told me and everyone that. I didn't have too many side effects, I did crave the whole grains the first few days, but after that no. I keep telling myself, what I saw Lisa write here, " nothing tastes as good as skinny feels" .
One day at at time and the scale and tape measure keep the motivation going. And then knowing its a life change, not a diet.

Well friends I won't be posting for about 3 weeks :( as the doctor told me at my pre-OP on Thursday that I must IMMEDIATELY get out of Ketosis for my surgery in a week and remain out for at LEAST two weeks after the surgery as well. I followed the protocol for phase three and seem to be maintaining at 135 so far. I am not allowed to take any supplements for a week but snuck in some smooth move tea last night. I admit I had instant energy from my Ezekiel toast, plain Greek yogurt and berries and clocked a 4 mile run in 40 minutes quite easily. I have not gone hog wild by any means, just going to do phase 3- maintenance type eating for this week and after the surgery I will have to eat to carbs to digest the mess, but then I'll get back to phase 1 to lose the last 15, hopefully at least maintaining 135 during this time. Last night I was offered wine, and realized that " technically" I could have it but it was so easy to say no thank you! :smug: I'll keep watching and supporting everyone so keep up the good work!

beautiful day in upstate NY, getting in the 80's all week with sunshine and cool nights. PERRRFECT!

Staying OP, almost back to my starting weight on my ticker, I just couldn't face putting over 200 on there, so when I get to 199, I will start posting my weekly losses. Psychologically this is what I needed to do, lol

Have a Wonderful weekend, rested well last night, the shoulder is less painful and tuesday starts PT, can't wait to finish this recovery :)

Thanks!

Make sure you are using that salt shaker! If not, that may be at least part the reason you are tired. If you don't like to salt your food try putting some salt in a glass of water with some lemon. Measure your sea salt out into a little dish in the morning and use it throughout the day so you are sure to get it all. Really helps!

Day 1 begun! I am suffering much more from the loss of Diet Pepsi than anything else, lol.

Question: I was always told to NEVER supplement potassium because of my heart attack when I was in my 20s (eating disorder related). I have always supplemented calcium and magnesium, so that is no change. My cardiologist didn't get back to me in time for me to start the diet, so I am just putting off the potassium for a few days, as I feel like that is probably safer than risking my heart. Has anyone else with a history of heart problems found out about the potassium supplements?

Any info appreciated.

Annik 08-17-2013 02:05 PM

I am not taking potassium and am doing fine on the plan.

PurpleMomster 08-17-2013 02:27 PM

Hi everybody! Just a quick check-in between loads of laundry and cleaning the house - the "fun" part of coming home from holidays, lol!

Went for my WI today and I'm down 4.1lbs and 5 1/4" so yes, it is possible to stay OP while travelling :D

I'm very happy - down 25lbs in 8 weeks :carrot::carrot:

the only advice i can and would give you on this is to f/u with your PCP or your cardiologist. They are the ones to direct you best on this matter. I would guess they give us K supplements b/c you will notice you are using the loo a ton more...which can mean you are losing a lot more K that you want or need to. Tho the poster below you as stated she has not taken the K supplements and done well on IP given your history i would just make sure your MD that you are doing the best thing for you.

Grats on the losses Jo. :D thats amazing :bravo: will you come do my laundry when you are done yours? lol

Not much planned here for the weekend...cleaning and packing that's about it...I watched a PBS program last night called "the truth about exercise with Michael Mosely" It was very interesting. The show was mostly about HIIT or high intensity interval training....the researchers suggested 3X 20 seconds of HIIT 3X week was really all one needed to improve insulin resistance and aerobic function...and the other concept was N.E.A.T which stands for Non-Exercise Activity Thermogenesis...which basically means you don't need to go to the gym to burn calories, rather, our bodies benefit so much more when we are just active ALL THE time..not new concepts but the science presented in this show was inspiring. So i guess some of my days off will be focused on just trying to be moving at least every hour :D

Have you told your coach you aren't taking the potassium? You will still lose weight with or without the supplements, but ketosis is extremely taxing on your system. Ketogenic bodies are actually considered TOXIC because they sap your body of sodium, potassium, and calcium. Please read: http://www.livestrong.com/article/55...etogenic-diet/
I am not trying to tell you what to do, I'm just worried about you! Don't want you to get sick :)

coloradogirl 08-17-2013 06:06 PM

Hope everyone is having a great OP weekend! I am super proud of myself, went out last night with a couple friends to Chick Fil A and behaved myself very well, got water and grilled chicken salad, ate the chicken and the greens. Left the fruit and cheese. Then when everyone was going to go back to their apartment to start drinking, I went hope and put myself to bed at a respectable 10:30! No cheats! Although I had so much fun I still feel like I did, ha ha! Went on a 2 hr hike/walk to help a local vet look for her lost service dog, but no luck :( At the very least, at least my dog and I got some exercise. I'll check on you guys later! :)

Hi there, I am jumping right in...

like it says to on the FAQs page that I am reading (I intend to read all 35 pages of the "tips for newbies"). I am no stranger to 3FC, and not even to IP. I've just been lost for a while, but getting back in the fray of trying to lose this extra 80 lbs I've been lugging around for about 20 years. I've gone on every kind of tangent diet there, and there are many that "work" for me, as long I am working for them; i.e., as long as I stick to it. That's definitely my problem: I've never stuck to anything long enough to see long term results.

I hope that as a user of alternative products that I can be accepted here on the daily chats; I simply CANNOT afford to pay the cost of the IP food program. I had some success a while back with alternatives, but again, I didn't stick with it long enough.

I am determined this time; I really am sick of the way I look, and the way I feel being this heavy. Today is day 2 and I am doing well.

Looking forward to learning from and being inspired by you all. Off to read some more of those 35 pages!!

Alternative users are ABSOLUTELY not only accepted but WELCOMED here! We have lots of them and many threads devoted to alternatives. Some, like me, do a combo of IP and Alts and others only Alts.

Welcome and we look forward to mutual support!!

Lots of us use alternative products.
Commit to following the IP protocol 100% no matter what (with products of your choice) and I guarantee you'll drop those 80 lbs. I'm sort've the tortoise, rather than the hare, but I started on July 30, 2012. I was down 80 by mid April, and that was after 2 stalls due to medical issues.

It's okay to be the tortoise. He won the race & I'm winning the war. Join me in the battle by committing to sticking 100% to protocol no matter what. No cheats will get you where you want to be and every time you succeed, it strengthens your resolve for the next time.

silverfighter 08-17-2013 08:49 PM

I am actually struggling to eat the whole protocol worth of food today (day 1). It takes forever for me to eat 4 cups of vegetables!

I can do anything 08-17-2013 08:52 PM

Lisa -
I agree with you about being the tortoise, I feel that as long as I am losing and OP then I am winning. The scale will eventually catch up.

Go to the first post of this thread and find the fun with veggie purée thread.
Also go to the recipe #4 thread and find the zucchini muffin recipe.
Easy way to get in veggies until you get used to eating them all
Trust me, before long you'll be wishing you could have more than 4 c.!

Hi coloradogirl,

Thanks for your concern! My coach doesn't push potassium or any of the ip supplements. She just recommends that I take a good multi-vitamin of my choice.

I eat meat almost every day and I like it rarely cooked (sounds awful when I say that!) It is known to be a good source of potassium.

By the way, I really like your hair style! It suits you!

On the journey,
Annik

Thanks JLUS and others for the welcome! I kind of thought that I did remember that there's lots of alternative ppl on here, I just couldn't remember there was a separate "daily thread" for alts. I've been re-reading the alts threads to refresh my memory on which are the best products that match up to the expensive IP foods. Ready to rock this out!

Day 2 eating is done and I did well, was not hungry (drank lots of water). Oh, need to double check on this: for some of my water, I've been adding a teeny tiny bit of flavoring via Crystal light. I mean like a quarter of a packet that is supposed to flavor 16 ozs of water, and I put that into my 24 ozs water cup. Is this OK to do? I drink at least 4 of those cups each day and I tend to flavor 1-2 of them this way. It adds just a tiny bit of flavor and it keeps me drinking. I hope it's OK.

Fine to add a bit of flavoring if it is sugar AND Asparatame-free. And especially if you are drinking most of your water plain.

FYI - Just to clarify, there is only one daily thread for ALL IPers, both IP food and alternatives... But there are separate threads that discuss alternative products.

Question about the protein

Hi again! I have a question about the 5-8ozs of protein at dinner time: is that supposed to be the pre- cooked weight or after cooking weight? I am working my way through the FAQs pages for newbies, but I haven't come to that yet and well, it is 35 pages long, lol.

One thing I did actually try from there today is I put my protein drink from breakfast in my coffee instead of my usual half and half. I thought is was going to taste horrible, but it was good, phew....cause I gotta have my coffee!!

Thanks! :coffee:

Don't tell anyone but - I have put myself to bed grumpy and without dinner before, because I just felt like I couldn't have what I wanted so I wanted nothing. I'm not sure if that's better or worse than cheating. In this particular case (french fries) I think nothing might be better, lol! Or maybe just eat an IP snack real quick. You shouldn't have to feel like you're suffering through IP because then you're more likely to quit, so do whatever feels best (unless it's giving up and eating the french fries, don't do that!) I'm sorry you had a bad day. I hope you have a day off tomorrow?

I agree! I just had some today actually as well, and last night- the bag is really big so I emptied it into a plastic container and I just munch a few pieces here and there when I am really craving something or hungry between meals. There are so many in one bag, I don't think I could eat the whole thing in one sitting for a snack, for one thing my mouth would be on fire!!!!

SweetScrumptious 08-17-2013 11:59 PM

I just had some dill pickle zippers and OMG heavenly :) almost like eating a bag of potato chips. I can't wait to try all those other flavors. Now you got me keen on the southwest cheese puffs !

The dill pickle zippers are my FAVORITE, but now doing alternatives so can't get them :(

Struggling thru this morning...... a stumble IP wise.....make it to lunchtime and take a nap with the babies. Wake up and have a strong IP finish to the day. Just 50 more minutes.....I can do this!

Happy Sunday, everyone!

I am down 13.6 lbs as of this morning and DH is down 16.8 lbs! We are very happy! :)

I am hoping to add another cheerleader to my signature by next weekend. I have been thinking a lot about the future and never going up over 200 lbs again. I am considering reaching my goal, maintaining for a bit and then going back on IP after Christmas holidays for a new goal of 140 lbs. I am also considering staying mostly gluten-free for life (except for maybe the odd birthday cake here and there). I was already lactose-free before as I am lactose intolerant since childhood.

I love the dill pickle zippers too! :p

Susie...congrats!

As for the GF thing...it really should make lifestyle changes easy after this diet. I have been GF for over 7 years now, and although that was only half the equation for me (hidden sugar and metabolic inability to use carbs for anything other than FAT...was the other piece) ...I think it's going to be easy to adapt pretty much to a Paleo type eating style from this day forward. Gluten ...? Really don't miss it! Good luck to you

Wow! thise are big ol first weeks!

I went GF and soy free in January.
There is gluten in several IP items. Anything with wheat.
I feel way better since I did it.
