Miscarriage and IP

  • Long story made short:

    I had a miscarriage, followed by a D&C on January 16th.

As part of my "mental and emotional rehab", I started the IP diet. My determination and will power have been awesome, as I am so motivated to just "overhaul" my life and get on a healthier path, etc.

Well, my dr called yesterday and said that my pathology showed that my miscarriage was a partial molar pregnancy and now I have to go on mandatory birth control pills (which I have never been on and am SO SCARED will make me gain weight), and weekly blood draws to make sure the mole is completely gone and not cancer, etc., etc., etc.

    Sigh. It's all very overwhelming.

Ok...so my question (sorry for the rambling post), is have any of you experienced anything like this and stayed OP? My dr was like "what in the world is the Ideal Protein diet?" when I mentioned it and asked if I could stay on it, and the Internet hasn't been helpful either. So....now I am asking the ladies who know the MOST about this diet (YOU!) to see what you think?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
  • I do not have any advice for you, but I do want to say I am sorry you have to go through all of this! Things WILL start to look up soon for you! Hopefully someone can chime in with some real advice for you. Good luck and hang in there!
  • So sorry for your loss. (((hugs)))
  • I'm so sorry for your loss!!! I don't know if this is what you're looking for but here it goes...

I went through all last year doing IVF/frozen embryo transfers, total of 5 cycles. I was on estrogen & progesterone as well as BCP's on & off from January-December. I finally got pg my last cycle but sadly miscarried a few days before Christmas. I was on IP for 1 month before my transfer then off while pg. I stayed low carb and once I had confirmed m/c I went back on IP. My point is with all those hormones I was on, I was still able to lose weight weekly. My reproductive endocrinologist, ob/gyn and naturopath all strongly recommend IP and say its fine to do while taking BCPs. I've been told that BCPs themselves don't cause weight-gain but can increase your appetite. I think you should be fine. One piece of advice I have is to take your potassium. I forgot on occasion and definitely retained water.

Hang in there, I know what you're going through is not fun!! Hugs!
  • So sorry for your loss.

I think I will be starting bc soon because I have been on my period for almost a month--basically since I started IP. A friend of mine has been on IP and bc for 2 years and hasn't had any problems with it and hasn't gained weight. Good luck.
  • Sorry for your loss. You sound like you have a lot of determination so I wouldn't worry about the birth control pills. I take a hormone injection every 3 months (depo provera) which is for birth control or for me to control wicked PMS and painful cycles. It is supposed to make you gain weight but I've been losing the whole year. I find the only issue I have is that there is still an element of TOM bloat and lower loses around my injection time.
  • Well here is my story... Did IP last year and almost hit goal! Went off birth control pills as were got married and were ready for that next step. Well found out we were expecting my next cycle. Went in for our ultrasound at 12 weeks and my baby did not have a heartbeat, had to have a d and c two days later. My doctor wanted to run a mass amount of tests turns out i do not produce progesterone and my hormone levels were way out of wack! Odd part was that my hormones were normal 8 months before the only change was starting IP. We have been very much trying again since aug and it has not happened. Im having lots of tests done to see why it has not happened again. My doc doesnt want me on IP at all when trying (i low carb wheat belly now but still creep on here sometimes). He did not like how when i phased off IP how fast the weight came back on - and i followed OP even after phasing off. If you want more info feel free to PM me i know what your going through its so hard not a day that goes by i dont think about it, really hard these days as my due date was feb 13.

Oh no! I am sure that the approaching due date must be SO hard! Thank you for sharing your story. It really gives me a lot to think about. I am glad that your OB was proactive and found out what was "wrong" so you can fix it before you get your next positive! Good luck, and thanks again!
  • Thank you, all, for your replies. Your hugs and your advice are really comforting! I am bound and determined to lose these 30 pounds, so I am preparing myself to possibly have some setbacks with the BCP, but I will keep my chin up!

Thanks, again, ladies---this board is, once again, a lifesaver.
  • There is a thread on here for those of us with Polycystic Ovarian syndrome so maybe read a bit there -- PCOS is all about hormone imbalance, and IP DOES affect your hormones. Take some info in to your dr. about this diet. Here is the link by the Dr who developed this diet, with free download info. You might find "hormonal" explanations there to show your doctor.

  • Sorry for your loss....
  • First I want to say that I am terribly sorry to read about your loss and what happened to you and think you rock for having the strength to move forward and work toward an even better you.

I have not experienced what you have but I can speak to your fear about gaining weight...I have been on and off BCP (birth control pills) since I was 18 and if I gained weight while taking them, it's maybe 5lbs...and that is common. When I was 140lbs and taking them I don't even know if I noticed a gain...at 200 I don't think I could blame BCP, hehee...I think it was the wine and chocolate tastings I was having every night with my husband...(wink)

I have been following IP for 3 weeks and have lost 14lbs...and I'm taking BCP now.

Focus on your health--I am sure that the BCP will be temporary. Also, if you start taking them and don't like the way you feel, you can switch brands...so don't be afraid to tell your doctor you want to try something different. There are also brands that are known to not cause weight gain...I don't know if your doctor wants to put you on a specific dose but ask what your options are so you can research them.

    Good luck!!
  • Lookin and Billster,
I am so sorry to hear of your losses. Keep moving forward with your doctors by your side.
  • I am so sorry about your loss. I can sadly identify. I miscarried in August and then got pregnant again in November, then miscarried again on January 4th. I started IP right after my D & C, like you. My OBG and perinatologist have no problem with my diet during any fertility treatments (they are both familiar with the diet). Ask your doctor, of course, but you should be fine. I will continue to low carb and just use IP as snacks during pregnancy.

It's amazing how many women experience pregnancy losses...no one talks about it, until you bring it up, then you are shocked by how many can empathize with you. Hugs to you and yes, there are exceptional women on this forum who are inspiring and comforting! Stay with us
