Found this online:
Ingredients:

Rutabagas
Olive Oil
Salt, garlic powder, and paprika
Preparation:

Preheat oven to 425 F. 1) Peel rutabagas with a paring knife and slice in 1/4" rounds. If you like, you can do them in strips - they will cook a little faster, but you have to watch them carefully or they'll burn.

2) Smear with oil and a little salt and put them on a nonstick baking sheet.

3) Cook about 12 minutes, turning twice. Take out when golden brown and tender. Immediately sprinkle with garlic powder and paprika. I like to add kosher salt at the end as well.

Nutritional Information:1 cup raw sliced rutabaga has about 7 grams effective carbohydrateplus 3.5 grams of fiber and 50 calories (plus oil).

Dinner isnt for a while. but I have been munching on them a bit while I was chopping them up, and they are quite yummy! They taste a bit like between cabbage and kohlrabi. Can't wait to have them as fries!

I made these last night for myself because hubby was insistent he didn't want any (never tried them). Well, they must have smelled really good to him so he wanted to try one. He loved it. Guess what I'm preparing tonight to go with our dinner? You got it! Rutabaga fries!

Are we allowed root vegetables on phase 1?

Bellamack 02-02-2013 07:44 PM

only rutabagas & jicama, no carrots, potatoes, beets.

Well darn, I wish I would have known that, I would have bought rutabagas when I was at the store this morning :dizzy:

I have the rutabagas in the fridge and will fix them with dinner tomorrow!! So excited to try this.

I was very excited to find diced rutagaga in the frozen section at my stop & shop.

those little buggers are REALLY hard to cut. I tried to use my mandoline slicer to turn a whole one into fries but the rutagaga was just to hard and I was worried if I slipped while applying that much pressure I'd lose a finger for sure!

I think the diced ones will make nice home fries. Can't wait to try them. A recipe I saw on line suggested cayenne, smoked paprika and chipotle pepper in addition to salt and pepper. As fries, they were really spicy -but DELICIOUS.

That's so funny. My hubby is a big time meat and potatoes (and corn and peas) kind of guy. I'm so glad I've found something we can eat together. :)

I have never, ever tried rutabaga in my life. I was looking at them at the store today and had no clue how to cook them.
Now I do. :-) I'm going to pick one up tomorrow and try the rutabaga fries.

Okay, I wonder if it is just how I made them, or if my husband and I really have that similar of taste, but neither of us liked them! Neither of us has been a fan of sweet potato fries in the past and the rutabaga fries are too similar for us. I couldn't eat them, something about the funny sweet taste was not appealing to me! :( I was very disappointed. But I am not discouraged! I will keep on truckin! :)
