I hate rutabagas -- or at least the way my mom prepared then when I was a kid -- and have been hesitant to try this but if they taste similar to sweet potato fries then I will have to try them again.

If you like sweet things and find the rutabaga too sweet as fries, then try cooking them with just the olive oil and when finished toss them in a bit of cinnamon and stevia powder. Makes a great dessert option. I do this with the jicama fries as well.

And we're allowed turnips, don't forget those. That's been the best discovery I've made through IP.

I've tried making the rutabaga fries but for some reason they never get crispy enough to be fries exactly. I still like them but was expecting them to be crispier more like fries. I've tried cooking them longer but that just ended with me burning them beyond recognition. What am I doing wrong?

You're not doing anything wrong. I get the same results. I blame it on my electric stove. I think a gas stove delivers better results. IMO.

Do you have gas? :D

Cheekyskeeter 02-03-2013 08:19 AM

No it's electric too. Glad to know I'm not doing anything wrong.

Yeah...I've made them all sorts of ways...chips, thick fries, thin fries... and they just burn the longer I leave them in...

I'm going to do some regular fries today...they're still salty and good! :)

I make these at least every other day. I use my Actifry (found it at a discount store for $35.) My kids even love them and we were never french fry people.

I had no idea what an actifry was so I googled it...I'll have to look into one of those...

I just looked it up but I didn't see it any cheaper than like $170?? At Bed Bath and Beyond it's $250.00 :(

You know what I was thinking of another "trick"...Make sure not to overcrowd the baking pan with the "fries" because they'll steam each other and have less of a chance of any potential crispiness. I making some right now and just flipped them. They are lightly brown and not burnt! I have them baking at 375 and 20 minutes on each side (well on two sides)...

I tried the rutabaga fries the other night...I love sweet potato fries and my husband hates them. But he liked rutabaga fries! Our 15 month old calls them potatoes...well..."doze", which is her word for potatoes...she likes them. I made mine with sea salt and pepper and a little but of EVOO, and tossed it all together in a big bowl, baked at 450 for 25 min and flipped them halfway through...I used two different pans and the ones on my non stick pan burned a little while the ones on my newer jelly roll pan were perfect...a little soggy in some parts but crispy on the end.

This is funny.
I posted the recipe that I found online...but now that everyone is talking about how good it is, I'm going to go buy me a rutabega today to try them! :D I do very much miss my french fries (I'm a potato addict)

I want to get the Pampered Chef chip tray and try and make them into chips.... hubby liked them as fries but I didn't care for them.

Okay, I tried making them tonight. I LOVE THEM. I made mine on a sheet of parchment paper on the pan. They weren't super crispy, but they weren't totally soggy either. And spread them out well. They do tend to 'steam' if they're too close.
