Default To all in Massachusetts where can I find rutabagas?

Hello to all my fellow New Englanders- I'm having trouble finding rutabagas and I am dying to make rainbows maple rutabaga bisque- any suggestions of where I can get some? I am on the south shore. Thanks!

I'm right over the boarder and buy mine at either Price Chopper or Super Stop & Shop. Big Y is a couple towns over and I don't know if they carry them, but I imagine they do. They can be a seasonal veggie and I believe it would be Fall. Google it or email the stores.. Good luck.

Hi there! I'm in MA too :-)

I go to Stop and Shop. In their frozen section, they have cut turnips that are great for pureeing! A yellow turnip=rutabaga. It is S&S brand, maybe $1.50 for the bag. Good luck!

I never considered frozen rutabaga. I always get the fresh ones and it's a work out to just "peel" them. But so worth it!!!

So is a rutabaga a turnip? My mother always called them turnips and boiled them, mashed them and then added butter and sugar.

I bought what I thought was a turnip (as per mom) and used it in my goulash the other night - now I'm not sure if that truly is protocol or not. The veggie I'm referring to is yellow and goes to purple, more round, definately not the shape of a carrot and hard to cut

Rutabaga or Turnip - allowed as a veggie on Phase 1?

I haven't had a problem finding rutabaga here, near New Bedford. MB, Shaws all have it. It is a little hard to find sometimes, location wise and I don't now why.

Now jicima I have trouble finding.

Rutabaga is a yellow turnip or swedish turnip Jicama is a mexican turnip. Gotta love those turnips!

It is parsnips that we cannot have on Phase 1, turnips are fine. What you put in your goulash sounds like it was a rutabaga

As I said in my post, turnips are fine on phase 1. A rutabaga is a turnip.

Ha Ha - Sorry, that was the clarification I required. I thought they were two different veggies

Have a great day

NinjaNurse, I actually noticed my Star Market in Belmont had them last night. I was intrigued. Is it yummy?

If you mean jicama, YES they are yummy!!! Technically they are a turnip but they have a consistency like an apple and a VERY mild flavor. I dice or slice them, sprinkle with cinnamon and a little splenda and it makes a yummy dessert!!!

I bought jicama today at Big Y and noticed they had rutabaga chopped in big pieces like they do for squash. I didn't buy it since the date was tomorrow and I didn't know if I would have time to make it soon. I haven't tried it yet.

I love jicama! I used to live in New Mexico and got the taste for it there.
