I've been on the program for just over 5 weeks. Although I've had great success my beautiful hair is falling out in clumps and the top of my head is sooo thin!!
I'm not a vain person but one of my best features is my hair and it's scary....
I freakishly look in the mirror at night making sure there aren't bald patches. I am super worried. Please help!

You need to go see your Dr. and have some test run, thyorid for sure. If that is a new baby (meaning did you just have a baby) that could also contribute to the hair loss. Please go see your Doctor.
I just spoke to my coach this morning about my hair loss and she gave me a sheet with info on this topic...
Temporary Hair Loss...While this temporary condition only occurs in a relatively small percentage females, it can be very traumatic if the woman does not understand what is happening here. Any sudden change in certain hormone levels can "stun" the hair follicle (these are very sensitive to hormones) and sort of sends it into a period of 'hibernation'. This temporary state of 'dormancy' may lat up to nine months, but, more often that not, usually resolves within six months. Moreover it ONLY affect the hairs that are in teh 'Telogen Phase (or final stage) of the hair growth cycle and are in the process of eventually falling out. The new hair shaft that will replace the old hair is temporarily thwarted in its development. Thes phenomenon is known as 'Telogen Effluvium' and is TOTALLY REVERSIBLE (unlike male pattern baldness, known as 'Androgenic Alopecia', which is permanent). The latter condition also has a hormonal cause: high levels of the testosterone metabolite DHT which actually kills the hair follicle. The condition of Telogen Effluvium may also occur during pregnancy or more commonly at post-partum. (Sheena - unfortunately you've got a double whammy here!) Again during pregnancy and right after delivery, the mother's hormonal balance chyanges significantly. This is why OB/GYNs employing the IP Protocol in their practices never get concerned about this...it is relatively common in obstetrics. There is good news for the 'new mothers' and the IP dieters experiencing this condition. Your new hair will be thicker, shinier, and healthier when it comes in. Why? Hair is made of protein, primarily keratin. During pregnancy much of the mother's nutrition is used to 'make a baby grow' so there might not be enough protein to keep the rest of her body in optimal repair. Similary many of our dieters have had poor eating habits, commonly too many carbs and not enough protein. Now with the adequate amount of these nutrients, she will not only love her 'new figure' but will also see positive changes in her hair, skin, and nails! Finally, Dr. Tran developed this diet over 20 years ago. If we caused women to lose their hair, we would not have remained in business all of these years!

I lost A LOT of hair after the birth of all 3 of my kiddos. I hated it as my hair is so fine anyway. It did grow back! I have been losing some hair on IP as well but I am taking the advice of others and taking Collogen, biotin, and fish oil religiously. I am so happy with losing almost 50 pounds now so I am focusing on my overall health versus my hair. I have faith that it will grow back. Talk to you coach and your doctor.
Good info here. After both my kids I lost a TON of hair - it's extremely normal after having a baby. It IS a good idea to have some bloodwork done at the Dr. to have your TSH levels checked. After my 2nd child, I couldn't figure out why 9 months later I was still sluggish, moody, tired and my hair was still coming out. Sure enough, my TSH levels revealed that I was hypothyroid (I'm now medicated for it and the hair loss has really slowed down). And you CAN experience hair loss with IP but that hair loss isn't permanent and you can lessen the effects by taking an Omega 3 supplement and biotin on top of the regular supplements.
Hair loss post partum is normal. Also taking a women's omega 3 can help.
I also noticed the amount of meat in a post of yours....are you eating the full 8 oz??
I lost a lot of hair at one point a few years ago (I was not in IP), and it was because I had stopped using iodized salt. The sea salt that we use on IP doesn't have iodine in it (at least mine doesn't). I still use regular salt w/ iodine on IP, and just add sea salt to everything as well.
I lost a ton of hair after both kids were born. They were 5-6 months when it started, and by the time they were one my hair was a wreck. I was told by my OB that the hair follice shedding process freezes while pregnant and once all those hormones are getting worked out and back to normal after birth, the scalp resumes its normal shedding process. My hairdresser confirmed this info when I asked her, too. I hope it's nothing else but postpartum loss for you, too.
After each one of my kids, I went through a major hair shed. And my hair just above my forhead on both sides completly came out. It came back each time. The hair that came back was/is (my son is 16 months) a different texture. So if you are losing it because of just having a baby, it will come back, but will take some time.
Start the biotin. For me it made an almost immediate difference.
You are probably done with the loss phase. Stick eith ip. Your hair will all grow back!

Before I started iP I had a whack of tests done and everything came back normal.. My son just turned 7 months and I havent noticed the postnatal hairloss until now. So i was thinking it could be both. I have a 4 year old daighter and and after I had her the hairloss wasn't even half as bad!
If it continues hard core like this I will totally go and see what she says!
Thanks so much

Hope this helps!
THANK YOU for this! It helped a ton. I feel more reasurred that it's hormonal and not permanent! My coach called IP head office because I was freaking out a bit and they said the same thing. (I love my coach- she's great)
Again thanks! I have more reading to do to understand it a bit better
I wanted to thank everyone who commented I this post!!! I will be purchasing some biotin and omega first thing tomorrow morning! It means a lot to me to know I'm not alone on this and thanks again for the GREAT advice and comforting words! I really don't want to quit IP because the success has been phenomenal. So cheers to another week!
Sheena,
I started losing my hair after about 2 or 3 months into IP. It seemed like so much, my heart would race when I was in the shower looking at clumps of my hair in my hands. After a couple months of shedding, I went to my hairdresser (I've known her for 30 years!) and asked her if she could tell. Even with all the handfulls that I'd been seeing, it still wasn't that obvious to her. And she told me the same information that people above have written or copied out for you.
I've now been on IP for almost 6 months, and the hair loss has definitely slowed. My hair is thinner, but not in an uneven manner and I can see lots of young hairs growing. It seems so much thinner to me, but I don't think it seems that way to anyone else.
I've lost 82 pounds since March, and in every other respect I am feeling so so so good. Temporarily slightly thinner hair is well worth the trade off to me!!!!
