Extra skin

I'm sorry if this is a repeat question but I've read a lot here about extra skin after weight loss. Is there anything you can do about it or could someone who has lost a lot of weight please comment on how it affects your body shape/size? I'm sure when I get to my goal weight, I'll be in that boat. Thanks

Busymomof3 04-27-2012 09:42 PM

I was actually thinking the same thing pls let me know too :^:

What I've been hearing is that you should give it some time after you lose. Chances are that your skin will "contract" at least some, depending on age.

I am also a bit worried about excess skin, and my coach told me to use the collagen packs (jello and blueberry pom) regularly like 3 times a week. I feel like I've already had some success by exfoliating and using a "skin-tightening" lotion. I use the Nivea Q10 or Jergens. Will wait a year after I get to goal before I even think about doing anything more drastic.

Would love to hear from people who've been in maintenance for a year or more.

For what it's worth.... I have a girlfriend who went from a size 14/16 to a size 2/4. Her weight loss wasn't as rapid as what happens on IP, but still. She told me that it took about 2 years for her skin to spring back. During this time, she also became a runner...

Edited to add....she's in her mid-50s.

sunshauna 04-28-2012 01:11 AM

That's encouraging, 2Poles1Girl. Did she use any lotions or other methods other than exercise/running?

Beanie Mommie, what jello and blueberry pom collagen packs are you referring to? Can you tell me more about this?

Samba 04-28-2012 03:35 AM

I too wonder how this will go. I already can tell there is loose skin on its way. Glad to hear time may help. I am in my 50's and definitely less elastic!

Not sure if I can take up running. Who knows though. IP has already changed a lot of life for me.

After losing 147 pounds, I ended up with about 20 pds of excess skin. I went to see a plastic surgeon and that's what he told me. I used that to create a 'virtual' weight in order to decide when to phase off, when I had reached a healthy BMI.

There is a great post somewhere about the body and skin, but can't remember who posted it. So much depends on your age, genes, how long you were overweight and how much you lost.

I use a homemade skin cream with argan oil, aloe jelly and beeswax cream, to keep the skin moist, if nothing else. Have also been doing strength training like crunches to help with the belly overhang. Too soon to tell if it will help, but something's got to! ;)

My doctor said to give it a couple years and the body has an amazing ability to reabsorb some of that skin, so don't give up.

LSJ100 04-28-2012 08:24 AM

Those are great tips...as I'm still at the beginning of this journey I've been trying to pay attention to things I can do now to try to be as preventative as possible knowing I have 100 lbs to lose. However my coach recommending I eat raspberry jelly 3x/week doesn't feel very effective!

(Also, the IP bluecrangranata drink and the raspberry jelly are made with collagen protein good for your skin)

Sewmam, I'm gonna see if I can find the thread you are referring to...I heard someone say that the skin isn't that hard to deal with compared to the weight, which, even though I'm not there yet, I can imagine I will wholeheartedly agree with!

Sewmam, Where do you buy your skin cream ingredients and would you share your recipe?

thanks,

I use the IP raspberry jello and the IP blueberry pomegranate drink mix. They are unrestricted and pretty yummy.

The only place I am having concerns of lose skin is my neck/ double chin area.. The rest of the bod seems to be shrinking with the weight loss and doesnt feel to squishy... yet!. I dont know what to do about the neck, ya really cant hide it with clothing especially in the summer.

Busymomx4 04-28-2012 12:01 PM

When i was 23, i lost 85lbs and had no extra skin whatsoever anywhere..now..15 years and 3 kids later and starting from a much heavier weight, i do have quite a bit..the inner thigh area is what bothers me the most cause i can't wear shorts or dresses (even if they're lower than the excess skin) i feel like I "giggle" too much. Tummy is bad too but can easily be covered.

Andie0606 04-28-2012 01:49 PM

My start-up materials say to have the jelly/pom granada drink every day to help combat cellulite. Anyone's info say every day, or is my clinic possibly just trying to sell more?

ProteinGal 04-28-2012 01:52 PM

its not on my phase 1 sheet but my coach said to take every other day along with your reg ip packets. Something about your body can only take in so much collagen, otherwise its wasted? So that's what I've been doing.

Andie0606 04-28-2012 01:56 PM

I just have one every other day, too. The "every day" info is on a sheet titled "Tips, Ideas and Suggestions" that I got at the initial consultation.

Yes, I'm reading it now, forgot about my tip sheet. It says for Maintenance phase you may enjoy one each day.

Mine doesn't say anything about Maintenance.

Marionm 04-28-2012 05:49 PM

I lost 85 pounds about 18 months ago and the skin did get better. After children and age (45) though, I don't think it's going to get to the point I'd ever want my stomach to show. I think my legs still seem more elastic, but that could be because I dance and they get exercised pretty regularly.

Hi Chloe - I think I got the argan oil on Amazon, after hearing about it from a lady who also goes to my clinic. The aloe jelly you can get at any health food store - doesn't need to be food grade. Aloe is good for the skin. I use Burt's Bees Baby Lotion, also got on Amazon. You see that in the stores sometimes now, but I like the plain lotion without the scents added to it. I don't exactly have a formula, maybe 1/3 of each component? The argan is fragrant and expensive, so this was a way to make it go farther...

There's a post somewhere about collagen and how there is a problem with taking it everyday - something about the body is unable to absorb it and it maybe even cause the body to become immune to it? Sorry I'm not real specific on it - I just remember thinking, oh I better not take it everyday... FYI

DanafromAustin 04-29-2012 12:38 AM

Strength train and collagen, plus give it a couple of years after reaching goal to really see what you are really dealing with before running to a plastic surgeon.:lifter::strong:

Samba 04-29-2012 01:00 AM

Okay, I am gearing up for the strength training and collagen and the time wait.

Love Argan oil. I already have some, but yes the expense keeps me from slathering myself in it. Like the lotion extender idea!

Already jiggly some myself. I love wearing shape wear. Seems to keep the thighs and tummy quiet! My back fat is just funny lumpy at this point of loss and I wear a shaper that smooths that out. Thank goodness for this elastic stuff I can pull on. I just feel more together with it on. Kinda crazy how that loose skin and funny fat makes me feel like I am a flag in the breeze sometimes. I think the rapidity of the weight loss made me notice all that. Need time to tone up and see what happens.

ProteinGal 04-29-2012 10:22 AM

Yes, thanks for the link, I ordered Great Lakes too, hoping it will be in tomorrow.

Have you gals found that your face skin is more smoother by doing the every other day collagen protocol? I've only been on this for a month and I look 5 yrs younger ;)

IPdivajen 04-29-2012 05:30 PM

The company that makes the IP foods/products also makes a liquid collagen and that's what I'm planning on getting in a few weeks. I'm almost 50lbs down and definitely noticing the difference in my skin - quite dramatic, I have to say! So I'm going to try everything I can.

I have a variety of creams that contain shea, collagen and vitamin E, so fingers crossed that that, plus the liquid collagen, will do the trick as I continue to lose.

The reason you're only supposed to have the jelly and granata drink every other day is that because they contain collagen they only have 7 of the 8 essential amino acis that we need, while all the other IP products have all 8. So if you constantly are having the collagens packs, over time you're actually depriving yourself of that 8th essential amino acid which can be less beneficial over time.

Ladyonadiet 05-01-2012 04:38 AM

I was just told today, that you should only take the collagen building products every other day, not to to have one every day. They do of course count as one of our IP packets for the day. Hope that helps! :)

Thank you for sharing the info about the amino acids. I was wondering the reason! :)

I asked my nurse to order it for me. I thought it was an "available in Cananda" product, I am in the US, so I thought we were still waiting on the FDA or something. She was informed by her trainer that IP does not make the collagen at all. So she can not order it for me. :(
So My question is, is it made by the same lab that makes the IP products, and do you know what company it is sold by or labeled as? I really want this product.
Thank you for any help you may be able to offer. :)

Pookiepotpie2 05-01-2012 07:51 AM

could I use Knox for collagen?

Good Morning All,

could I add Knox (flavorless jello powder with no other ingredients) to my shakes and stuff to increase my collagen intake or is that not the same kind?

LSJ100 05-01-2012 09:26 AM

I was also told that IP does not make a liquid collagen product...Jen, when you get it could you share with us what you got and where you get it from?

Thanks!

Busymomx4 05-01-2012 09:36 AM

Quick question...for the collagen...now that i've lost most of my weight...is it too late to use it...since i already have a lot of loose skin, i'm thinking not and that is something that i should've used from the beginning.

I was told that the Natura company (who makes the supplements, etc) has a liquid collagen. I'll ask my coach when I see her next week as she's on vacation right now.

That sounds like a good solution. It must be the same thing.:)

IPdivajen 05-16-2012 10:51 AM

Just following up on this. So yes, Natura does indeed make a raspberry flavoured liquid collagen. My coach ordered it for me and I've been taking it for about a week now.

If anyone wants it and can't get it from their coach I'm happy to buy and ship it to you for you if you'd like? It's about $34 for the bottle. But again, do talk to your coach because it does exist!!

Kaypix 06-07-2012 11:48 AM

If you happen to have the nutritional content info i can try to find a remake or competitor that's the same or super close.

saskchick 06-07-2012 12:09 PM

cyndie 06-07-2012 12:28 PM

OMGosh..you look fabulous! I have my first appointment at Ideal Protein tomorrow and I'm so excited! After reading all the success stories on here and seeing the pictures, I can't wait to get started. I will have to bite the bullet and actually get in front of the camera for a change, just so I will have something to compare the pictures to when I get slim.

Congratulations again, you are such an inspiration!

Cyndie

LosingLawyer 06-08-2012 02:54 AM

First off, IPDivaJen - you look fantastic! Congrats on your losses so far and I can't wait to see your transformation when you hit goal.

I'm very concerned about loose skin as well. I lost 100+ pounds a few years ago and had no skin issues, but am a little worried about it this time. I'm relatively young, so I hope that works in my favor. I'm also planning on taking collagen supplements (found some on Amazon). Crossing my fingers!
