I never really got an odd taste in my mouth - but I drink A LOT of water and that helps flush the ketones out (coach said 3 ways ketones leave your body - urine, feces, breath). If you buy some ketone testing strips (sold by the diabetic section in pharmacies), be sure to only test at your morning urine, since you can dilute the ketones for testing throughout your day. I actually bought a pack of 100 strips and test every morning to make sure I am still 'straight'. I don't cheat, and stay OP - but sometimes you never know if you inadvertently do something w/out knowing - especially at the beginning when you may eat the wrong veggie, unknowingly have too many restricteds, etc.
I do the same, I am addicted to peeing on the ketone sticks.. for some reason I test myself numerous times a day. It is helpful, your morning one, to make sure you are on track. If you aren't in it, perhaps you tested something the night before that didn't work. Oddly for me, the bars pull me out of ketosis.. so now I am on 3 non-restricted a day. Hopefully I can add some restricted items to a couple times a week.
At the beginning I was testing multiple times a day too - but figured out I was just wasting money since the afternoon & evening ones always showed up as a 'Trace', but that was after drinking 16+ cups of water and I learned we dilute the ketones as we drink.
I never noticed a difference in anything when I went into Ketosis. I just followed the sheet to a "t". I have been on program now for 49weeks and have NEVER tested myself on ketosix. That is money you don't have to spend, if you are following the program 100% then you will be in ketosis.
Honestly, as long as you are 100% OP - you will be in ketosis on starting on day 3-4.
I have never tested with strips, etc. I also never really had the bad breath (at least that I know of!).
The best thing for me about IP is that I DON'T have to overthink it. So I don't. Just follow the plan and you will succeed!!!
(I know, this is hard for you (me) who are slightly OCD and like to be in control of everything, but actually it's very freeing - enjoy it!!)

well Im a science buff... and info hog... I found it interesting. Im definitely on OP 100% ... im sure Im in ketosis. but I do like KNOWING and not assuming. thats just me.
I couldnt get to sleep last nite.... (one sign of ketosis beginning).
I havent been hungry (alot) so far but my appetite seems to be vanishing... and Im spacing out my meals longer and longer (another sign of ketosis
I cant tell if I have the breath thing happening b'cus I use MIO in my water and Ive been drinking alooot of tea.

honey chile.... I drank 2 cups of chamomile tea (which KNOCKS me out) and @ 1am I found myself playing angry birds and watching family guy.
I could NOT go to sleep last nite.... and today Im bouncing off the friggin walls.
