[QUOTE=sunnymae;4322702]Hi Sewmam,

Thanks for the protein powder suggestions. I will start making my own! I have powdered and liquid stevia that I can use too.
For the thyroid and adrenals, I have just had a whole panel of blood/saliva testing for both and for the female hormones as well, so I'll keep you posted on that. My new MD who is very holistic wants to avoid synthetics if at all possible, so more to follow on that.

Sunnymae: I am also interested..I am on a synthetic thyroid. ..I am wondering if I could add that gala thyroid support as well. I want to drop the thydroid with my weight loss, but my doc says no.
Why do you need adrenal stress support?

Maile 05-06-2012 12:16 PM

New Englander: I am sorry your dog is in pain..You are such a comfort to him..to sleep with him..I would do the same. Take care of yourself and get some rest as well. Hope he feels better today.

Sarah: I do not eat many carbs at dinner. If I have pasta sauce I consider it a carb, and eat it with vegetables. I have had one half cups of beans or butternut squash with dinner.

I am getting near the end of Phase 1, my husband is phasing off.... looking for totals or ideas for Phase 4 meals and daily limits.... our coaches didn't provide much guidance... I've looked for a thread for over an hour to learn from but can't find it.... is there a thread that already addresses this? Or can you all give suggestions?

GoodEats, How does the new vanilla powder compare? I'm using all the standard flavorings (Torani, etc.) and would love to find things that do the trick w/ better taste. Thanks for your insight.

[quote=Maile;4320234]Evepet: I liked Why we get Fat also. I am also reading: Sugar the hidden addiction by E. Boroquez.

Maile,
I couldn't find the book quoted above at Amazon, is that the correct title and author? Like Evepet I'm trying to learn as much as possible. Thanks.

I understand eating berries, how about white and pink grapefruit?

New Englander 05-06-2012 05:46 PM

Hi everyone! Eating an apple is like having a ton of sugar and sometimes it's just what I need for my afternoon snack! The old me would never have craved an apple...and now the new me loves fruit!!!

So, I realized if I make my chocolate muscle milk shake with coffee and not water (like I use to do with IP shakes) it's delicious! The coffee really enhances the "chocolate" flavor and makes the fake sugar seem less fake. I was pleasantly surprised. :)

I have to figure out other ideas for lunch/dinner...I've been having salads for lunch with deli meat and cheese and for dinner whole wheat pasta with sauce and meat. It's funny how long pasta and sauce (and everything for that matter) can last when you only eat the serving size!!! ;)

Keep going on maintenance. I'm realizing what many of you have said in the past...it's about learning what works for you, and it's much MUCH more challenging than P1! But it's a lifestyle that I'm much more happier with than being morbidly obese!!! Cheers!

Thx Chloe. I couldn't locate "Sugar the Hidden Addiction" with that author either. And it sounds like a book I'd definitely like to read, now that I've just finished "Why We Get Fat" - which I thoroughly enjoyed and will re-read at some future time.

So I was playing with my iPad last night and just searched the ap store and found a couple of low carb recipe book apps.

Anyone use those apps and if so do you have any recommendations? I'll probably purchase one (or two) but thought I'd ask for recommendations on here first.

Thanks :)

Just so you have the spelling, I take the Gaia Thyroid support. The reason I was taking adrenal support as well is because my symptoms ran across the board from thyroid, low blood pressure and adrenal...for instance, extreme fatigue, suddenly dry skin, sleeplessness, nervous, panicky and a slew of other things. What I read about "adrenal burnout" seemed to cover ALL of the combined symptoms including thyroid and low blood pressure, so I decided to take that as well. It worked for sure.
The Dr. I am working with now says women get thrown too quickly into synthetic thryoid treatment and she believes there are other hormonal factors involved. So, in order to not have a false reading on my saliva test, she has me off all of the supplements for the moments, so the tests will be accurate.
She will put me back on some kind of regimen after I get the test results in and I'll let you know what she says. I'm always happy to help and if anyone is ever interested in seeing her, just email me privately. She's in NYC. Or if you want me to find out if she has peers in your area, I'll ask her for you.
Keep you posted Ladies, and thanks for sharing all your yummy recipes and book recommendations.

Hi all hope you had a good weekend!
It is my dd 7th birthday today. Although I would normally not eat cake, she told me she thought I was done with the no sugar diet and should have a piece of her birthday cake. I did-mainly to try to reassure myself I am not going to make her an obsessed body image kid at 7! An I don't even like cake ;)
Otherwise it has been an uneventful spring weekend. The sun is out, I should be doing something, but I am relaxing after the birthday party fun!

It's my ds birthday Wednesday. I see not end to the cake parade. I will be sticking to shakes and veggies for all other meals!

Back on phase 1 today for the day(hopefully!). Have yet to try eating a carb meal for dinner..i.e. pasta and marinara. My coach keeps telling me that it is fine and that it is good to have carbs at dinner, but it doesn't seem like many do. Would love to hear from anyone who has had success (or not) eating a carb meal for dinner. Thanks!

I've only been in maintenance for 5 weeks, but I've had carbs at dinner most of the time. For the past week, I either completely forgot or just got too tired to make another dish, so I didn't have any, but when I did, it was whole grain pasta, or brown rice type stuff. Didn't seem to affect my weight so far...

Gaia brand Thyroid Support and From fatigued to fantastic-"Adrenal Stress End"
It took about 2 weeks till i noticed the difference, but it really did help.
Only reason I had to get off all that stuff, was so my testing would be accurate and just measure my bodies natural state without them.

Thank you!

I have not found any limits posted by IP, beyond the Phase 4 chart they gave us. I know some of the folks here have created a max cal/carb/protein/fat limit for themselves, but I don't know how they came up with the numbers. It may be a question of experimenting with what your body can sustain over time. Some folks just can't eat carbs without gaining, so they don't have the starches, even though they are 'allowed.'

Good luck!

Momto2cs: Does this mean we should focus on strength training? 50 gms of protein seems like a lot.

I really enjoyed reading this. I have a lot to learn about different forms of low carb (primal/paleo). Thank you for your posts on this, any more references or recommendations?

Hi, It is heartbreaking to see an animal in pain and not be able to do anything...My 10 year old lab (who had knee surgery) is on some strong meds but he's not "himself"...he's also epileptic, has had cancer, knocked out teeth (Playing as a pup with his sister and he ran into a tree...) he's a very active boy! My DH is being so awesome caring for him. I can't even imagine how parents with children do it... Let alone a single parent! This is a lot of heartbreak and hard work... I ended up sleeping in the bathroom with him for a hour or so last night b/c he wouldn't leave his "safe" place and didn't want to be alone...(kept whining and when I'd show up he's stop)...once I laid down with him he went to sleep...

My dear neighbors brought over some homemade pizza tonight...and um, well it's not my "day", but as my DH went outside to talk with them I brought it inside and snook a piece...yes it was good and much better than store made stuff... It was good and it was a tiny piece...

So, for all of you who read my long (boring...I just need to talk about my poor boy) post I do have an IP question... Is there a target # of carbs we should be eating per day? I find myself wanting a protein bar as a snack and get concerned with their carb content...

Thanks!
Maggie

Your poor 'puppy'!! So sad to hear his story but on the flip-side it's good to hear he's in good hands :)

Regarding the target # on carbs while in maintenance...I was told that I could continue on with the P3 breakfast if I wanted; I usually eat part in the early morning and part in the later morning, around 10am. At dinner we can have 1-2 servings of carbs (1 serving is up to 15g); it's up to us to figure out how much we can have before we start gaining weight so start with 1 serving (or less) and keep adding (if you want more) until you see your weight increase. As far as snacks and using IP products, I was told that there are no restrictions anymore; again, if you think you could be carb sensitive, I would start eating 1/2 a bar and slowly increase the amount until you get to a full bar.

purple sky 05-07-2012 02:19 PM

Do you guys eat carbs with all your meals? It was suggested to me that it is best to consume carbs with breakfast and dinner, that way your body has a chance to work it off or something.
