How often do you step on the scale?

How often does everyone get on the scale? I found since starting IP I can't seem to keep myself off. I know I should only be weighing myself once a week because weight fluctuates, but damn if I don't want to check everyday.

This is bad because if it has been 3 days (like today!) and the scale has not moved, I start questioning everything and it gets me upset. Now, I KNOW that this is not a good way to think and I KNOW that just because the scale has not changed doesn't mean that things aren't changing and I KNOW that this doesn't mean the program is not working. But I can't help myself?!?!?!?!

Deep down, I know all these things to be true. Does anyone else battle these demons too? Just curious if you all sneak peaks at your weight other than your official weigh in.

abbykitty1126 06-24-2011 12:17 PM

I constantly battle the scale. I try to not do it everyday for the same reason if it doesn't move I feel like giving up. Ive cut down to every 3 days lol. I really should only do it once a week but its so hard!

becca1978 06-24-2011 12:21 PM

I do weigh myself everyday, but I don't beat myself if it goes up.

brummie 06-24-2011 12:38 PM

Up to about week 5 I was constantly on the scale (pretty much everytime I went to the bathroom). But I found that if I didn't see what I wanted to see I set myself up to have a miserable (pity party) day. Now I step on it about 3 times a week, the results don't always make me happy...but this far in the program I pay more attention to how far I've come - so it doesn't get to me as much.
If I were to give you any advise on this, it would be to wait until you are further in the program to weigh everyday. Really just so you don't have to deal with any additional emotional struggles or challenges than you are already dealing with (by giving up your favourite foods, staying OP, etc).

In the 3 months that I have been on this forum, I have seen many IPers struggle to mentally get over the number on the scale - it's a decision you have to make for yourself. If you want to weigh everyday..go ahead, just don't let it dictate how you feel about yourself. You are beautiful and should be proud of what you are doing for yourself - that should dictate how you feel about yourself!

i weigh every day so that i can keep track of my losses on my wii fit. my weight will fluctuate a bit within a week, but it doesn't bother me. sometimes it will show that i've gained a pound or two, but it always comes off in a day or so. the general trend is that my weight has gone down every week, even on the small loss weeks. that's enough to keep me positive.

WijitingBoo 06-24-2011 01:01 PM

I try and weigh myself every day as well.

I do it more to try and track if there are certain foods that affect my weight more.

For example, I now know that when I have salmon, my weight is up significantly the next day, but then it drops again the day after.

Or, even a small amount of aspartame keeps me from losing.

I look for trends, but the fluctuations don't bother me if the weekly total is still down.

I start getting bothered when the weekly hasn't moved!

TinaCleg 06-24-2011 01:07 PM

I hate the scale so I only get on it once a week and that is the day I go in for my "official" weigh in at the clinic. I am afraid to do it more than that because if I show a gain it will put me in a tail spin emmotionally.

texan kay 06-24-2011 01:10 PM

I check my weight every morning, right before I drink my first cup of water.
This morning, I am up a pound from yesterday. But my skirt is beautifully hugging my waist, which was not the case only a couple days ago. I do not care what my scales say, I do care how I feel.

AriesNV 06-24-2011 01:11 PM

I weigh in every morning. I've acknowledged a long time ago that I fluctuate between 5 pounds ALL the time, so I don't even get phased by the fact that one morning may be a pound or so heavier than the last.

ChynaKC 06-24-2011 01:19 PM

I weigh myself everyday, 5 times a day...lol

jennydoodle 06-24-2011 01:40 PM

LOL! Thanks ladies- it is good to know I am not alone :) I am definitely forcing myself to not get on the scale everyday because of the emotional rollercoaster it puts me on. And I am definitely focusing on all of the positives happening right now- such as a pair of jeans that did not fit last week fit this week. It is just so hard how much emphasis we place on that one little number...

petie 06-24-2011 01:47 PM

I found out too (here) that I am a SW. So good/bad at it now because I went out and bought a scale with its own brain/bells/whistles. Morning/noon/night/and 3 more just in case. Only to watch the darn thing change its mind willy nilly all over the place. Entertainment value only because I am also loving my clothes.

Reema 06-24-2011 02:00 PM

every day....and my weight at home is always different than their scale. Does it happen to someone else?

murleya1 06-24-2011 02:24 PM

I do it everyday in the morning to watch for trends. I also secretly love to watch the numbers go down. I also don't take it bad when the scale does not change or it goes up. The more salt I eat the more water I retain. I have also found when I make my lean protein eggs the scale is very nice the next day.

There are too many factors to really beat yourself up if the scale does not change or it goes up. Especially if you stay OP.
*salt intake
*water intake
*last bowel movement
*TOM

murleya1 06-24-2011 02:26 PM

Another thing. I got keytone test strips. I do a quick check pretty much every morning. If the strip says even small keytones I am happy. I take that as an indication I am doing right.

NonieRuns 06-24-2011 03:36 PM

Twice a week.

Once on weigh-in day (their scale), which is Tuesday, and once on Friday morning to 1.) see how the week is going, and 2.) to plan for the weekend.

I'm up one lb. this morning but I've got a 10 mile run tomorrow morning, a 7 mile run Saturday afternoon, and another 10 mile run on Sunday morning on tap. So I think that pound+ will be gone by next Tuesday. Oh, I'm training for a relay--don't usually do this much back-to-back running!

And if the weight's not gone? I agree with everyone who has remarked above that it's more about how we feel (or more precisely how our clothes feel!) that is the biggest determining factor (mood, needed changes, etc.). And right now I am a "perfect/comfortable size 6 petite" and I'm loving it!

P.S. I'll probably weigh more often when I'm on maintenance to do as Murleya 1 does, "watch for trends" and determine my carb level tolerance.

HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!

Ishbel 06-24-2011 04:08 PM

Hi,

My name is Carla and I'm a scale whore! LOL

Seriously it was a really a HUGE emotional rollercoaster last week because I bounced around about 7 lbs. I was very hard on myself and didn't celebrate a 1.2 lb loss. On any other diet I would be extremely happy with a 1.2 lb loss. My coach and my friends actually said "that's enough" - I'm considering it an intervention :D. So I gave my scale to my bf last night (it's not in my house, in fact he left it in his car trunk so I wouldn't be tempted at his house either) so that I wouldn't be tempted to jump on. I was bad enough to get on it 5-7 times on a Saturday or Sunday. It's been very hard for me today (my first day without weighing myself)...but at the same time I'm not using the number to beat myself up.

I told myself only go two days, and after two days I'll try to go two more days. Someone on here commented that you have to believe in the protocol and the program. You will loose, it works! I hope next week I'll walk into my weigh in not knowing what I lost and will celebrate that number as I know it will be lower.

Stay lighter!

Carla

Victoriar 06-24-2011 04:18 PM

I'm new to IP but have been on other diets and only weigh in 1x a week. I would be afraid that I might sabotage this diet if it showed a gain or stall before that week mark.

You and I have the same amount of weight to loose and are loosing the same way. I have to try and stay off the scale but i find it hard to do. Plus if I see the weight go up I start drinking more water right away

HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!

What relay? I did the Ragnar Relay Florida Keys in January, and am going to do it again this coming January. I have been sidelined from running with Plantar Fasciitis since the relay, so I am slowing getting back into running. Just got the OK from my doc a couple of weeks ago. It has been slow because I am starting from scratch. I am hoping by the end of summer I will have built my endurance back up so that I can really start training in Sept/Oct.

jennydoodle 06-24-2011 09:39 PM

Carla- I can definitely relate! On other diets if I lost 1/10 of a pound I would be excited, that is how slow some of my losses were! I think maybe I am spoiled by seeing the scale actually move on this diet that I am getting greedy ;) Ha-ha! You are right, follow the protocol, have faith and I will lose weight. I just need to keep reminding myself of that. Maybe I should make that my mirror mantra...

driveshorses 06-24-2011 11:16 PM

I'm definitely a slave to the scale, but I do it every morning.

CarrieElizabeth 06-25-2011 04:43 AM

I love the scale and probably weigh myself 3 times a day... :). I know I need to chill out!

Shanelle 06-25-2011 09:44 AM

I weigh myself every morning as soon as I get up. It always tells me something different...I should try every second day maybe...it is disheartening when you follow program and the scale tells you that you're up. Like it was mentioned, I just remind myself where I was and where I want to be, gives me a little motivation to stay OP for the day:)

Thefireresides 06-25-2011 10:18 AM

I am also addicted to the scale. Usually twice a day. I have to prepare myself for my weigh in, I couldn't take not knowing and emotionally prepare myself for what the scale will say at my weigh in. I am a slow loser and use the scale to increase my water intake, and see how certain foods, food timing and exercise make the scale move around.

trishn222 06-25-2011 10:36 AM

I also weigh everyday to keep track of the fluctuations and to watch the numbers go down. If it goes up I evaluate, but it is going so well on this plan that it does not bother me.

brady1022 06-25-2011 11:36 AM

Scale needs to stop ruling my life

:dizzy:I step on the scale each day and find if I do I operate in a different realm if I am down ...more kick in my step more attitude I feel like I pull my stomach in as I am walking . It's so funny but I really do. I guess it rules ....I have gone down almost apound a day since being on this program...Since May 31st to this day a weight loss of 21 lbs ..During the monster time ...(TOM) up 2 but then down. Sometimes I get afraid to get on..It's crazy to be ruled by this....But my inches are huge and I feel full of energy..I really think this is going to work.....Please let it work..Thank god for all of you to talk to really I mean it....I come her often for support and get it.....Bless you all..

Today is day two of no scale in the house. It's hard, REALLY hard! I even dreamed about stepping on the scale last night HAHAHA :D

wuv2bloved 06-25-2011 07:20 PM

I don't even own a scale, so I only weigh in on my days at the clinic. So its always a surprise!! so far it has been good surprises each week. There has been a few weeks where I have only lost a pound or two but its STILL A LOSS which is a huge accomplishment. We can ALL do this, we just have to keep our heads in check and stay OP!

kellyg53 06-25-2011 07:29 PM

I weigh every morning on my "unofficial" scales. I keep a spreadsheet on my computer that averages my weight for the week and then calculates weight lost and % lost from my starting weight using the weekly average. By using an average, all the ups and downs, well, average out.

I use the data for a nifty chart that plots progress against goal.

I also plug the numbers into an app on my phone that keeps some stats for me.

crash302 06-25-2011 07:47 PM

I am doing the same as KellyG53. I haven't tried the strips? Are they available in Canada?

TEEGIRL 07-01-2011 02:24 AM

every day sometime twice a day ....lol....

Porthardygurl 07-01-2011 04:01 AM

Every day ...except for TOM days and except for bad days when im sad..dont want to feel more sad if i step on it and dont see what i want.

ItsAboutTime 07-01-2011 08:00 AM

I weigh myself every morning too. I always have an excuse to tell myself of why I NEED to just check. My weigh in was yesterday but today is he 1st day of July and I joined the July challenge so I HAD to weigh in. (I was glad I did because it didn't move yesterday but is down .8 this morning!) I'd love to wait a whole week but I wonder if I wouldn't stress myself out too much worrying about it. I was thinking about trying every other day to ween myself off of it. Doesn't that sound horrible!

Watkat 07-01-2011 09:57 PM

I am now weighing every morning. It is a necessary thing for me. Keeps me motivated to MOVE the fat!

Maile 07-02-2011 10:35 AM

I weigh myself everyday..then weigh in at a gym boot camp 4 days a week..then once a week at IP. The funny thing is that none of the scales match..but at least they show I am losing.

ChynaKC 07-02-2011 04:51 PM

I weigh everyday...probably 3 times a day...lol

Lone Loser 07-08-2011 09:53 PM

Every day! At least -- LOL!

I do the SAME thing. This is what I do in order to stop the obsession: I tape a thick piece of paper over the readout of the scale with my GOAL WEIGHT on it. I still step on the scale but I get to visualize what I want to see. I always feel good knowing I'm on the journey to that number. Then, twice a week, I let myself "see" for real. One is on my own, the other at weigh in with my coach.

I have also taken the scale and put it in the trunk of my car. That works really well. Who wants to weigh themselves fully dressed in a parking lot or your driveay?

Have fun, it's all fun really.
